warspite1 -> PAW 1941-45 larryfulkerson (Axis) vs warspite1 (Allies) (5/30/2018 6:25:14 AM)

So this is going to be interesting. I've not really played the naval war - other than moving a few RN ships around the North African coast and either blasting the Axis or being sunk by Axis aircraft! So a steep learning curve ahead.

But this theatre is one I am really interested in - though may fall asleep when moving the Chinese - and the chance to play with big boaty things against such a respected opponent is too good an opportunity to pass up.

Okie dokie Rob. This is my last visit here. Um.....I've decided to
give you delayed permission to read my AAR. When the OPSEC is
stale for a page of the AAR I'll send you a message that page XX is
open for viewing. I expect these pages will be those that are a couple
of turns old, maybe older. I've started filling up page one with a lot
of the "new scenario to me" kinds of postings, OOB samples, Inventory
views, house rules, etc. so I expect it will become open relatively
quickly. But I'd like you to be able to keep up with what's in my
AAR because it may help you a bit to see what I'm finding important.

Okay Larry - then the same will apply to this thread. To keep things interesting for anyone reading my interminable verbiage I would like to show 'everything' so if there are any posts I don't want you to see then I'll let you know.

Hi

Really interested in how you do here...looks a huge scenario....given the very limited naval capability in the CFNA you may have more worries for your Navy than the occasional Stuka strike [:)]

Yes - I'm going to have to learn a whole new area of the game while trying to fend off the advances of the Kido Butai.

Fortunately I have two big advantages; firstly I'm only up against the Japanese and I have it on good authority that they are all shortsighted, buck tooth midgets who can't fly aircraft.

I also have the cream of the world's battleships an aircraft carriers to operate. There also appears to be some colonial stuff... Enterprise? Saratoga? No idea what they are, but I will probably use them to guard the Panama Canal or something while my Royal Navy strike force beat off the Japs.

I hear Germans fly the Jap planes.

Is HMS Warspite among the British forces? If so, she and a few Swordfish can easily sink the Japs and dictate peace terms in Tokyo Bay.

Pending getting the turn from Larry I thought I'd just give the game a quick peek. I don't seem to have a number of ships but the thing that most stuck out was this.....

Why???

Warspite,

I'm going to enjoy this battle between the two of you. It is going to be very interesting watch both sides of a battle.

Good luck and have fun!

Turn 1 - Axis Turn (in real time)
7th December 1941

Here comes the Kido Butai!!

There is then a lot of aircraft manoeuvring in Southeast Asia (looks like French Indo-China) and Manchuria – where aircraft are taking off to fly south….

What a lot of air regiments – many of which seem to be heading for the home islands….

There’s a lot of subchaser movement – almost as though they are performing recce missions.

It’s difficult to tell when zoomed out but I assume the land battles are in China and the Chinese appear to be being handed their bottoms…..

Lots of ships moving all over the shop – it really is unclear where some of this action is taking place as the outline of the islands is quite different to the real things – unlike with the KB the ships are not named.

There is a lot of action at what I assume is Papua – and New Britain to the east – and the extreme west of Papua too.

This is a long turn!!

There appears to be landings in the Philippines- not Luzon though?

Oh… here come the 22nd Air Flotilla – that’s not healthy…..

There was some bombardment of an island somewhere in the Pacific but can’t tell exactly where here either….

There seems to be some enemy ships off northern Luzon now

And here comes some ships off Thailand where, for reasons presumably known to the scenario designers, many Indian forces are hanging out…… the Japanese land at Singora – smack in between the widely – and rather handily (for the Japanese) - separated Indian forces

Japanese forces appear to be landing in southern Luzon

Over 13,000 moves so far – that’s a tad more than in the Western Desert…..

Lots of Choo-Choo action in Korea/Manchukuo and then French Indo-China and through Thailand. Japanese forces now appearing north of the Indians too.

Ohh and back to the combined fleet heading for a showdown with Rafe and Danny

Heavy units seen north of Luzon and more ships heading for what I assume is Wake Island?

Loads more task forces heading from the home islands to various points all over the Pacific, South China Sea etc

More ships heading for the southern Solomons???!!!

Lots of movement in China now

warspite1 -> RE: PAW 1941-45 larryfulkerson (Axis) vs warspite1 (Allies) (5/31/2018 10:16:38 PM)

Turn 1 - Axis Turn (in real time)
7th December 1941

Now the attack on Pearl Harbor and one battleship after another evaporates – (Oh good grief......)

Now to The Philippines and an attack at Legaspi

Then what looks like Borneo

Then Malaya – sorry ahem Thailand……

Northern China

Some islands I can’t identify but assume one is Wake

Singapore – Force Z evaporates – okay…….. I think I need to step away from the computer and count to about 14 billion….

Next a comment comes up about Malaya AG evaporating but the screen appears to show (what I assume) is Canton???

In northern China a load of partisans evaporate

The Kido Butai leave Pearl

Now a Japanese task force head towards Manila Bay where…..guess what?

There follows a whole string of bombardments and attacks all over the place – a large Japanese task force is now free to bombard Manila at will

It looks like Guam is toast – and what must be Wake

And that is the end of the turn. And it looks like the entire battleship strength of the Pacific fleet has been sunk. Mmm I won’t say too much at this stage - there's always the difficult trade-off between historical reality, what was possible and pure fantasy. Let’s just see where the game goes…..

Turn 1 - Axis Turn (in real time)
7th December 1941

The playback has its limitations for a game of this scale. I can't afford to skip it - there is too much going on - but without a fast-forward and rewind option, or a pause option then I'm going to have to be selective about when I can watch the previous turn. This may slow the game time up considerably.

I'll go through the first turn's losses tomorrow or Saturday.

MikeJ19 -> RE: PAW 1941-45 larryfulkerson (Axis) vs warspite1 (Allies) (6/1/2018 12:50:09 AM)

Warspite,

I think those options make sense during the play back. As most people know, I have not tried multi player yet, but there are lots of times that I wish I could rewind the playing of the AI's turn to ensure that I catch important things.

Now, I'm off to see if Larry posted anything about this battle...

All the best,

Szilard -> RE: PAW 1941-45 larryfulkerson (Axis) vs warspite1 (Allies) (6/1/2018 3:16:02 AM)

I rationalise it like so: in this alternate reality, Malaya Command actually launched a kind of supercharged, pre-emptive Operation Matador, instructing 11th Indian to completely abandon the defence of Jitra. But they got lost, and instead of Singora/Patani, they ended up too far north.

HTH!

You'll notice you have in Malaya 8th AIF's 23rd Brigade (historically detached to form weak garrisons at Ambon, Timor & Rabaul). With this, Malaya should no doubt hold :)

Yes I can rationalise it so - its just a shame because its not really necessary.

Yes I'm fully expecting Malaya and Singapore to hold.....for one turn at least [:)]

Turn 1
7th December 1941

I've started to go through the losses. The numbers - certainly in terms of army and aircraft - don't mean too much as I don't know what the replacement rates are, but I'm sure things will become clearer as the game progresses.

Sure enough all 8 battleships were lost + Force Z [:(]

Okay, but I don't think Larry need worry about me getting close enough to these to destroy them.....

Turn 1 - Scenario Briefing
7th December 1941

Key points to remember:

- GAMEY - No units are to be disbanded (other than Chinese)

- GAMEY - Chi Comms can't occupy the same hex as the Nationalists - I'm happy with that rule

- COMBAT - Use Port Attack when bombing ships in port or the ships there will not be damaged.

- COMBAT - Enemy controlled hexes with no enemy troops visible usually need a port attack by air or sea units prior to the attack

- COMBAT - No Japanese ships can move within 5 hexes of Pearl during the first two turns (the Kido Butai must return to Japan after turn 1)

- COMBAT - Sometimes vacant enemy ports can't be invaded with friendly ground troops alone (I assume this refers to landward attack) - and air or sea attack will be required

- COMBAT - Some verbiage about dual icon units - I'll ignore this until I come across one...

- Philippine and Dutch armies lost are not replaced

- The Australian Armoured Division can only be deployed in Australia as it can't use sea movement

- SUPPLY - Hexes with supply will be marked with an * for full or primary supply. All ports other than Australia and India?? have at least secondary supply which is defined as 10% of normal for the Japanese and 25% of normal for the Allies.

- The Japanese have 7 locations that will trigger a loss of 1 point of supply if lost:
Shanghai
Canton
Palembang
Medan
Jambi City
Tarakan
Balikpapan
The Japanese player is expected to keep these.

Turn 1 - Axis Turn
7th December 1941

I'm not entirely sure of the best way to present the information as, unlike CFNA and STBP, this is a multi theatre theatre and the numbers involved means that one speadsheet is simply too unwieldy. I will probably evolve something overtime but will start with areas:

China
PI and the Pacific Islands
Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific (to include Burma, Malaya, Borneo, Hong Kong, PNG and the Solomons until the US arrive)
NEI
Solomon Islands (probably to include Australia)

Chinese supply is err.... interesting.... Anyway I'll worry about that later. Firstly, here is the combat losses from the first turn. As said, I have absolutely no context to place these numbers in at this stage - I'll just assume its BAD!

Losses of 10:1 in infantry doesn't seem overly positive...

I'm not sure if this is the right way to present the ships. The damaged no. is I presume the % damage. The sunk and engaged figures are nos. of individual ships.

Turn 1
7th December 1941

Okay so this is a big game! As I haven't got a clue what to do I'll just try and play safe and try and avoid losses where possible - unless I can delay the Japanese by hanging on.

China
The first theatre I will look at is China.

As can be seen above, the Chinese have lost over 500 infantry squads and a cursory glance at the map shows there are many more about to be swallowed up. I will have to retreat into the hinterland me thinks.

I really should read up on this theatre - I'm going to struggle with immersion here. The units mean nothing to me, I have little to no idea what I'm supposed to be doing (other than not getting mullered).

I make immediate mistakes by moving forward and getting surprised by enemy units I never realised were there. I'm largely therefore resorting to digging-in where I am and seeing what the Japanese have....

When there's no good reason to move don't!! [8|] A Chinese Communist division is in a little trouble here....
