Simulacra53 -> HPS - Defending the Reich (1/8/2018 10:51:18 AM)

Anyone have experience with this game?

Is it worth a buy?

Does it work on Windows 10, or if need be Windows 7?
Does it support higher resolutions - widescreen etc?

Just for some context - I took a look at the bibliography and I share most of the titles, to give an idea of interest.

Is it a good wargame / simulation?

Blond_Knight -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/8/2018 1:03:06 PM)

I haven't touched it in years, so I cant say it it'll run on Win10.
But I recall it didn't have a lot of game play. It was very simplistic.

Simulacra53 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/9/2018 8:15:31 PM)

Thanks for replying.

Dunno if I am disappointed or happy to be able to save money.
Was kind of hoping this game was a good operational level wargame.

I am facinated by the air campaign(s) over the Reich and it did look promising judging by the screenshots.

Ok, well I’ll listen [:D]

Rosseau -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/9/2018 10:57:25 PM)

Did you ever get Matrix Battle of Britain II - Wings of Victory or Grigsby's Bombing the Reich? Only other two I can think of.

demyansk -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/9/2018 11:19:24 PM)

Those two games would work

Red2112 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/10/2018 10:03:06 AM)

Yes, you could also use the "commander view" in BoB Wings of Victory which II which is a top-down view and manage your squadrons that way. Me thinks it would be very similar to what you get with the HPS title, as it on the simple side. Wings of Victory II getīs alot of love from itīs fans, you have mods and patches at the below SimHQ site:
http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/75/1/battle-of-britain-battle-of-britain-ii

Hereīs the commander view:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D61A2d3vAM&t=576s

Itīs a A2A title (or was), as a flight simmer you would know who A2A is (one of the best aircraft devs for FSX/P3D).

I was in a similar situation some months ago.

Just saw you already have BoB II on the BoB II forum [:D]

Oh well, my bad! Do share your W10 please, it would be nice for the rest of us...

Sure, I’ll share some screenshots of the settings - tomorrow after work.

Simulacra53 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/11/2018 10:33:46 PM)

Bombing the Reich, I don’t think I can get over the dated engine.
There are some old games that I can still accept, but there is some limit that [:)]

I keep planning for a game of WitW - The Point Blank campaign, but something else keeps getting in the way.

Guess I’ll go have fun with the games I have first before looking elsewhere.
Thanks for helping out,

Simulacra53 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/13/2018 6:14:51 PM)

Hi Red,

Sorry for the delay, but I have posted my settings in the BoB2 Win10 thread.

Nvidia, but it should work for any chipset.

Red2112 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/13/2018 8:38:40 PM)

Thanks Simulacra53! [:)]

Fred98 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/13/2018 11:44:38 PM)

I played Defending The Reich.

It was a good wargame.

It was missing a "something".

A clever person with a great idea could have made it into a fabulous wargame!

I’ve read something online describing the game as a drunken man’s walk - or something like that, not a native speaker.
As describing the flow of the game, where each side leads for a while until the lead is taken over by the other and so on.

Otoh, that seems to be what happened in the actual night campaign, until events on land and during the day started to have their effect.

You can only buy this game in a boxed version, incl shipping and possibly import duty in my case, which makes it only attractive if it is REALLY worth it, which is the reason why I’m interested in your opinion.

Red2112 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/14/2018 3:11:22 PM)

Thatīs the same problems I saw when I was judging if I should buy it or not...

Main problem, shipping and import customs/duty fee, and CD most likely neededs to be on drive in order to play the game.

For that matter I would rather get "Decisive Action", at least all the trouble "might" be worth it.

Um no. Decisive Action plays at three resolutions as I recall, the highest being 1024x768. Plays might be incorrect, the game wont launch unless your desktop resolution is 640x480, 800x600, or 1024x768.

Red2112 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/14/2018 9:14:14 PM)

Oh really, that zuks!!!

I donīt get how they still sell (at that price)software that, iether is used with a old PC, or just wont work right, with NO account for support.

I understand things get old, especially with PCīs, but to sell something for €60 which is about how much it would cost you to buy a PC of that age, that would work on par (or maybe not, due to CPU speed) with that software., just dosent make to much sence.

I guess thereīs something called "vintage" software with a high price tag now [:D]

Thanks Blond Knight for the heads-up!

Simulacra53 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/14/2018 9:33:08 PM)

Pure complacency, even if you are in a niche market at some point you need to bring up to date developments or people will not accept your premium pricing.

HPS seems to be seriously lagging.

Tiller is now starting, although not at a quick enough pace imho -pricing is relatively high, but at least it is all downloadable, patched and updated..

Matrix also seems to have found a good mix of supporting older games, publishing a new generation of games.
Not only that, but they seem to have have embraced Steam, periodic sales and lower prices in general.

Games do not get better with age even if some people like to fool themselves that they do.

Red2112 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/14/2018 10:27:31 PM)

I agree, and JTīs software works great, I had no issues at all with installerīs and games till date. I even have 3 of his Android versions which work great too, and are my "go-to" appīs when waiting somewhere or a bus/train ride [:)]

Greybriar -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (1/15/2018 11:01:02 AM)

Here's a link to Defending The Reich in case anyone is interested in purchasing it.

blim3k -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (12/12/2018 12:05:48 AM)

There is a patch from 2015, so perhaps it should work on Win10

demyansk -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (12/12/2018 9:15:45 AM)

I am surprised that they don't sell these games for $ 9.99 or less. Only taking up server space for a 200-500 MB download. Especially, old, old games. Just a thought.

I agree. They fact they are still asking nearly $40 for old games like this is ridiculous.

demyansk -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (12/13/2018 12:29:53 AM)

I would buy a few for under $10 bucks. Play them a few times and then done with them. That's why Steam cuts the prices to increase traffic and players purchase other items in the future. Amazon is the Master at this. They suck your money big time. I even wish a few Matrix games would go to single digits.

Blond_Knight -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (12/13/2018 12:32:12 AM)

Im convinced HPS is like one of those old Star Trek episodes where the people are all dead and the computer has chugged on for ages alone.

Doesn't steam gain more than money in the deal? Don't they gain access to your computer and also make their software necessary to play all these "cheap" games?

Red2112 -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (12/13/2018 11:19:12 AM)

Asking $60 for a game that has been "in the works" since 2013 is darn right wrong. But that didnīt seem to bother them to much either.

I recently asked "support" what was the correct way of installing both TSS games, and the reply was "Scott hasent added anything new since last update and everything you need is in the download section"!

This way of avoiding support, with out saying that the reply had nothing to do with what I asked, is been way to common in the past, so for me Itīs not even worth $10.

Is that from Steam's end user license agreement or from Reddit?

I have played some of the games WITHOUT Steam software. In other words, you can copy the games to another computer without Steam software and play on it if you want. Might not work for all the games.

No, the questions are from me (based solely on conversations in these forums). (as an aside" What IS this reddit? Is it a farcebook alternate? or an offshoot? or just a giant forum? I would search for it myself, but I'm afraid of lemmings.)

By your example, they did gain access to at least one computer and you did need their software to get the game? (Which on paper, sounds very much like a prerequisite for playing the game! *grin* Not to mention the red flag usage of the phrase "played some of the games.")

Steam software is required to purchase and download the games from Steam Internet store. Software is required to play some of the games bought from Steam Internet store, at least those that make use of HTC Vive. If I recall correctly, Steam asks permission to gather information about my computer hardware, and I can refuse it. I can turn Steam software off and play great majority of the games without it. Personally I don't care do I buy & download the games with a WWW browser, FTP client, Steam, or GOG Galaxy. But at least Steam automatically updates the games as soon as official updates come available, and that is convenient. More convenient than looking for newest patches from all over the Matrix site under Products, Members Area (different patch versions under the 2), and where ever else.

Reddit is a WWW forum like this one. Personally I don't like it because there is lots of misinformation that readers quote on other forums. Then again, does it matter where the misinformation comes from?

demyansk -> RE: HPS - Defending the Reich (12/13/2018 9:07:44 PM)

I don't play 75% of my Steam games and most likely will not play them. Just like watching a movie more than twice.
