BattleMoose -> How are effective are the iron fish? (10/5/2015 11:16:51 AM)

So in a new PBEM and fairly early on I scored a single torpedo hit on CVE Hosho from a swordfish. The damage in the replay didn't seem particularly extensive but she was reported as sunk. Really not sure if I believe it, she was about 7 hexes from a safe port.

Another was BB Fuso, she took a single torpedo from a DD and a few, shell hits to the superstructure, nothing relevant. She was also reported as sunk and again I am deeply skeptical.

Would you believe these reports?

No.

I torp'ed a R- Class RN BB early in the game with 2 type 45s from Kates. It happened several hexes of the west of coast of Australia. Ship was reported as sunk, turns later I realized the BB - was actually sunk near Geraldton about a week later. I can only hypothesize that it was damaged heavily and floatation failed as it tried to reach the Perth harbor....

In the same engagement I I had BB [censored] torpedoed with 3 strikes from Swordfish. It had a floatation level of 92 ! It barely made it into the corner of Australia where there is redands which I had invade immediately using a troop convoy destined for Koepang.

Then I realized floatation was slowly failing on that harbor so I brought [censored] division from Philiphines earmarked for [censored] and invaded Broome and then Perth so that that BB has a chance to live again. I realized its repairyard was too small so I had enlarge it.

So the invasion of Australia was done because British fish do a lot of damage...USN has yet to strike an airbone torp into one my ships in the pacific.

Brit fish do the job. Hosho is small and fairly fragile and likely toast...unlikely the BB will sink.

Unlikely you sunk Hosho but possible. With Japanese repairs she could have burned up or just foundered at sea. As far as Allied torpedoes once hit, the British and American torpedoes are about the same. One hit on a BB will not do much unless you get the dreaded "magazine explosion." Three might sink an old BB and four should do it nicely. I find that two hits on a Japanese CA will do them in about %50 of the time. A DD will sink about 70% of the time from one hit. It all depends. Distance to a safe port is a factor. The old American mk10 is weaker and one hit should not sink much of anything but a small DD or merchant. Japanese torpedoes are different. Long lance will sink an Allied DD almost all the time-say %80 but the older Japanese torpedoes and the air craft version are not as powerful. American BBs can soak up torpedo shots but three or more long lances means trouble. I had the Saratoga take two older Japanese torpedoes and come out of it with less than 8 flotation damage. The big thing is that the more durable the ship the longer it takes to repair. Put two torpedoes into the Yamato and you will not sink her by won't see her for the next six months or so either.

I can speak that just ONE torp hit on Yamato will take it months to repair. Two would take over a year [X(]

One hit on a Kongo class BB took 1 and 1/2 months to repair in a large shipyard. Only ship in the yard too. Hit was from a US sub in '42 to boot!!!![:@]

There is actually a lot of variability in a single torpedo hit. I had one hit the Yamato and do 30 flotation damage. That translated into about a year in the yard. However, I have deen a single hit also do very little serious damage at all-even a long lance on my fast American BBs. So to be safe, you had better put two into the Yamato to be sure...[;)]

+1
Yamato need 4-5 days to repair one major flotation point in 100 size repair dock. Other Japanese BBs need ~3-4 days.
Single torpedo hit(that penetrate armor) depending of luck is between 1 to 4 months of repairs. Two torpedoes are six months or more.

Third hit, i will start worry if ship survive

This is based on my personal experience.

EDIT:
Add to that travel time to dry dock. My personal record of ship moving from battle to dry dock is 11 months. One of my CAs was heavily damaged in February 1944 near Rangoon, she enter dry dock in Japan in January 1945[:D]

Why Japan versus Singapore? Or even Hong Kong?

I only used Singer for fast repairs and pomp out water.
Also problem was not trip. It took month between Singer and Japan. Problem was that after initial battle ship was so heavily damaged that he was not able to move. She spend 8+ months to move between Rangoon and Singer.
First she spend 4 months in Moulmein (constant 9/9 DL of base but Docup newer attack port only AF) with assist of AR. When i decide to move her south in half way to Singer she eat another torpedo. Disabled in small port another few months of repair. When after 8 months she finally arrive to Singer base was already in 4E range. I only do fast repairs and send her to Manila where after small water pomp failure she again pomp out water. She arrive to Japan in January and now finishing or already finish repairs.

It was huge morale jump for me when she enter dry dock.

It is also worth mentioning that during battle she was damaged she sunk 3 enemy CLs
