STEF78 -> From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/17/2015 8:45:49 PM)

New campaign!

This time I'm playing the russians and it's the first time that I will reach 1942 with this side. The other games were won (4) or lost (1) before the mud.

So I'm a low experienced russian player.

My opponent, Beekeeper, is a russian [&:] and a very agressive player.

We play mild blizzard, random weather and I agree restrictions on the use of paratroopers.

I will begin the AAR in December 1941.

Beekeeper played the traditional Lvov Pocket and drived hard to Leningrad in the north. During the 17th first turns, we had only a turn of mud

We had a lot of fights and multiple encirclements around Stalino. I lost the city because of a clear turn during the mud period.

STEF78 -> From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/17/2015 8:56:44 PM)

Turn 27, 18th december 1941

Even with mild blizzard, december 1941 is a very pleasant period for the russians.

I'm able to counter attack all along the front. Beekeeper gives ground in the South. Rostov is no more under threat.

My 4 goals for the blizzatd:
- create a buffer in front of Moscow
- Inflict as much losses as possible to his Inf divs
- Create the maximum of guards units
- Create a 7 M red army

The northern part of the front after my moves.

And the South

should be interesting, looks like you have a pretty well balanced game at this stage

MishaTX -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/18/2015 6:40:17 AM)

I'd say you're in a pretty good situation as the Soviets. Your lines (with the exception of Leningrad which, in my opinion, is un-holdable if the Germans really want it) are as good or mostly better than the historical situation, so you did a damn good job. Now comes surviving '42 without paying so much for it that you can't come back, but it's looking very promising to me.

Then again, I've seen the Germans come back with some pretty early "summer" offensives in the spring due to mild winter, so we'll see. But I definitely think that you've done well so far. Should be very interesting to follow, which I intend to! [sm=Cool-049.gif]

At this stage it's ok but I'm worried with the coming spring

Turn 32, 22th january 1942

Heavy fights during the last weeks. In January GHC recovers some strength and I must be more careful in order to prevent successfull counterattacks.

2 hot spots:

Rjev/Vyazma

Evry hex gained in january can be decisive in the next summer

Stalino

He only has some good units here and I think that I can take the city

STEF78 -> From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/18/2015 7:04:03 PM)

The evolution of the OOB isn't good enough on my point of view. He kept most of his Pzd away from the fights.

I will be less aggressive during the next week and focuse on the creation of rifle brigades

chaos45 -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/18/2015 7:27:33 PM)

STEF- is a point in the early part of the game where a bunch of soviet equipment upgrades happen. During that several weeks your OOB will stagnate some due to lots of manpower being in tranist back and forth for the equipment changes. Think it happens over January/FEB as I remember being frustrated by lack of OOB growth as well and noticed a ton of old squads getting moved to the pools- like thousands of squads.

The OOB system decides once JAN 42 hits decides all units need to dump their 1939 squad types and in mass all those squads start changing out. It really hampers Soviet field strength for alittle while.

schascha -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/18/2015 8:27:07 PM)

I thought this upgrad begins on december

chaos45 -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/18/2015 8:59:51 PM)

could be, but either way it keeps your force from growing much while all the changes are happening.

swkuh -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/19/2015 9:49:51 AM)

@STEF78:

What did Beekeeper do to take L'grad (apparently) so easily? Coup de main, or siege, etc. Did you give it up?

Would appreciate any thought.

chaos45 -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/19/2015 12:31:57 PM)

Ehh against a determined German attack Leningrad is impossible to hold in the current version of the game. Its a failing in the system is how I see it. Look at AARs unless the German player really messes up their assault with AGN Leningrad falls in pretty much every single game. Most of the time in 1941 and if not in 1941 then in spring of 42.

swkuh -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/19/2015 12:45:13 PM)

@chaos45: Thanks your thought.

I'm currently doing Campaign '42, Axis, playing "difficult" balance, and game starts with a strong Soviet line across the isthmus that isn't going to be defeated with available forces. So, bombing the small port to the right on the isthmus is the plan. BTW, do I need to bomb the L'grad port itself? its a biggie, but it borders water that is under Axis oversight.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack Stef78's ARR, but questions might interest others. BTW, Campaign '41, L'grad falls in my play.

chaos45 -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/19/2015 12:52:40 PM)

Sent you a PM on leningrad.

I did it the classical way
Pskov turn 2 then west Luga
Turn 6/10 pushing east with Pzd/Mot/Inf and taking the 2 rough hex Southwest of Leningrad
Leningrad isolated turn 13
Neva crossed turn 15
Osinovets taken turn 17
One clear weather turn during mud and the beachhead supply is cut too
Leningrad and Pushkin fall end november

Turn 33, 29th january 1942

Last turn of january, from experience february is slightly in favor of the germans with mild blizzard

A view of the losses

And Stalino is mine (for some weeks...)

you've done well to keep your captured so low, that will help with arms pts in early 1942 (less going to rebuild the returning divisions) and should help you build up a substantial army as the year goes on.

You've clearly made him pay a high price for his gains so far

STEF78 -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/20/2015 6:41:29 AM)

Since end january, I'm building rifle brigades at a high rate (beetween 6 and 8 per turn) but I noticed that my AFV OOB ddin't increase.

So I looked at my pool...

And almost all units have their "heavy tanks TOE" > 100%.

Should I build tank brigades? It seems to me that they are pretty useless while defending....

I don't think, it's a good idea.
They are too expensive on trucks.
For this problem, somme times I had to disband or put on static some of them.

beekeeper -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/20/2015 7:46:07 AM)

>So I looked at my pool...

you evac full t34 factory from kxarkov and forgot 20 vechile, i think it was very strange choise.
in my sov games, pool t34 after 43 have 4-6k+ and not deductible. i cant use them have 20-30 mech\tank corps.

p.s.
in new version old tanks can disassemble arnaments, it rly nice! maybe t34 41 you can too.

chaos45 -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/20/2015 11:56:26 AM)

I wouldnt build tank brigades. You get a ton of them and when you start attacking later on you will burn up alot of armored vehicles especially T60/T70s. I commonly lose 100+ AFVs per attack in mid to late 1942. So having a built up pool of tanks isnt a bad idea.

Also as long as you dont lose alot of tank BDEs- you will have enough auto created to tank BDEs to form something like 30+ total Tank corps alone. I have not nor do I intend to build any tank BDEs period. As I doubt I will need more than 30 tank corps.

If you build anything build some motorized BDEs and keep them in the back to get fully trained up. As you can convert 3x motorized BDEs to mech corps late in 1942. Again though you will be using up alot of trucks. As you dont get any free motorized/mech BDEs and mech corps are better than tank corps CV wise.

Personally Ive found that as long as you about 80% or better on trucks it doesnt seem to have alot of effect on the Soviet army. Im typically at around 100k trucks and require like 120k. Soviets just dont build enough trucks period to keep up with units/attrition. Even if you had kept the 20 vehicle factory that only ends up being like 110 or so trucks a week, which is a drop in the bucket compared to your requirements. So over an entire year that 20 vehicle factory only equals 2 tank/mech corps worth of vehicles, you get much better payoff saving other things than vehicles in total I do believe.

Entire war 20 vehicle factories only equals 6-7 total tank/mech corps in truck capacity its really not a huge hit to the soviet war effort. It seems the game is built to were most of the Soviet trucks have to come from the western allies via lend lease. So really the Soviets will be truck poor until 1943/1944 no matter what you do with vehicle factories.

Peltonx -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/20/2015 7:28:44 PM)

70% trucks has little effect so trucks are simply window dressing

Obviously I made some mistakes while evacuating industry but it was a constant headache as you played agressively and advanced very fast...

I lost most of Leningrad industries, 8 armaments in Stalino and of course the Tula's industries which where destroyed by an ahistorical raid...

Rostov, Vorochilovsk and Taganrog where saved after some desesperate counterattacks.

I'm rather satisfied with the final result

STEF78 -> RE: From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/20/2015 9:00:49 PM)

Thanks to chaos45 and pelton for the comments about trucks.

At the moment, it's not my major concern.

I wonder where will the lightning hit?

STEF78 -> From Russia with love, STEF78 vs Beekeeper (8/20/2015 9:06:05 PM)

I have a full map of turn 34 but as whe are only turn 38, I will wait 2 turns before posting it.

Let's have a look at my best units on the 12th february 1942. Not that bad!
