IL-38 is very old plane and IL-38N program is only "stop gap" solution so with what ASW plane Russian Navy will decide to go in future?
Design bureau"Tupolev" think it will be Tu-214P(right half of picture):

What is interesting according to this model Tu-214P will have ability to be refueled in flight and can take AShM

Bangalore, February 18th. / TASS /. Naval Ka-52K, which are being built for "Mistral", could potentially get a new airborne radar. This will allow them to apply anti-ship missiles X-31 and X-35, told Tass first deputy general director and general designer of the corporation "Fazotron-NIIR" (included in KRET) Yuri Guskov at "Aero India 2015".

He explained that now Naval Ka-52K equipped with the same radar "Arbalet" (development "Fazotron-NIIR") as the "land" version. According Gus'kov this millimeter-wave radar sufficient to solve the tasks in the coastal zone, which do not require a large range.

"As the situation with the" Mistral ", we propose to extend the features of the deck version of the helicopter, equipped it with an upgraded on-board radar with built-in centimeter range frequencies that enhance the detection range of nearly 200 km and will enable the use of anti-ship missiles like the Kh-31 and Kh-35, - a spokesman said.

As previously reported, Arsenyev Aviation Company "Progress" to them. Sazykina (part of the "Russian Helicopters") last year received from the Russian military order on the party Naval Ka-52K for the "Mistral". The first three helicopter had to go to Navy at the end of last year

http://tass.ru/armiya-i-opk/1775416 in russian

Hmm combat load for Ka-52K 2000 kg , weight of Kh-35 610 kg with booster for launch from helicopter + 186 kg for AKU-58AE = 796 kg,
for Kh-31A it is 610kg + 90 kg for booster + 186 kg for AKU-58AE =886 kg
so, ability to use two anti ship missile if Russian Navy chose this upgrade, impressive

Hongjian -> RE: Naval and Defense News (2/25/2015 1:13:35 PM)

Recently, the Taiwanese Defense International Magazine revealed google earth pictures of China's Huludao Shipyard, showing what could be the first ever confirmation of China's first generation of SSGN, the improved Shang-class, equipped with a "hump" behind the sail for up to 24 YJ-18 AShM or CJ-10 cruise missiles. This news was then confirmed by the Taiwanese MOD.

From the satellite photos, three boats with characteristic humps behind the sails can be seen. The one in the dry-dock is the most clear, showing that its opened VLS complex is being fitted out in that moment (Pictures are from Dec 2014).

[image]http://i60.tinypic.com/2iha62u.jpg[/image]
[image]http://i61.tinypic.com/24n2pw4.jpg[/image]

We can assume that at least 2 improved Shang-class boats (Designation could be Type 093A) are now in service, as the earliest pictures indicating a SSGN-modified 093-class were taken as early as 2013, when two 093As were launched:

Good shots from 2013, showing the more blended sail of the 093A and the VLS 'hump'.

[image]http://i60.tinypic.com/23kolfs.jpg[/image]

Another shot from some years before, showing the hump on the improved Shang-class quite nicely:

[image]http://i57.tinypic.com/v5hc8i.jpg[/image]
This shot also could show the 093A's TASS pod on its rear control surface, arranged just like onboard the Russian Project 971.

http://military.china.com/important/11132797/20150215/19311487_all.html

(Some sources call this new boat "Type 093G2" or "093B", since they assume that the "093G1/A" is the acoustic stealth improved production variant deployed till now, while the VLS-added variant should be the second one)

China has previously tested vertical launched AShM and cruise missiles on her new Type 032 Qing-class SSB (conventional ballistic missile submarine), aside of testing the JL-2 SLBM. This class was built as a replacement of the single venerable Golf-class SSB (Type 031) in PLAN service.

The official model and the official CGs both show that the 032 has four VLS-tubes infront of the sail.

A few more PLAAF updates:
Y-9 Special Mission Aircrafts

KJ-500 AWACS delivered to the PLAAF

[image]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-df3mUwJf4sE/VOVYCG5ihNI/AAAAAAAAKXs/Rxek2249iWk/s1600/KJ-500.jpg[/image]

quote:

After the success of KJ-200, the next generation medium-sized AWACS (KJ-500/High New 9?) has been developed at SAC since late 2000s. Based on the Y-9 platform and some hardware of KJ-200, the original "balance beam" radar antenna was replaced by a fixed rotodome containing three AESA antennas arranged in a triangular configuration, a design similar to that of KJ-2000 in order to provide a full 360° coverage. The radar is still the product of the 38th Institute. Rotodomes of different shapes were evaluated onboard a Y-8CE radar testbed, and a circular dish shape was selected as the final configuration. A SATCOM antenna has been integrated to the top of the rotodome as well. It also has large nose and tail radomes which could house additional radar antennas to cover both forward and rear hemispheres. Similar to High New 8, it features two large rectangular bar shaped fairings housing ELINT antennas on both sides of the rear fuselage. Therefore the aircraft can fly the ELINT mission as well. Unlike KJ-200, two additional ventral stabilizers were attached to the tail in order to further enhance stability during the flight. At least two KJ-500 prototypes (#737) were constructed by late 2013. KJ-500 is speculated to be in the same class of KJ-2000 in terms of AEW capability and is expected to replace KJ-200. The first KJ-500 entered the service with PLAAF 26th Division at the end of 2014.

Y-9JB ELINT ("Sino EP-3")

[image]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pyWsOTSaPJw/U9pZPTMhNkI/AAAAAAAAIyw/PovIxOxeRFg/s1600/GX-8b.jpg[/image]

quote:

This newest member of the "High New" series was first spotted in April 2011 at CFTE (S/N 720?). Unlike Y-8W, Y-9JB is based on the new Y-9 platform powered by four WJ-6C turboprop engines with 6-blade high efficiency propellers. As an EW aircraft it features four large rectangular shaped ELINT antennas on both sides of the forward and rear fuselage. Additional antennas are installed inside fairings at the wingtips, beneath and on top of the mid-fuselage, on top of the vertical tailfin, underneath the nose as well as inside the nose/tail cone. Four blade antennas are installed on top of the wing near the wing root. An EO turret (containing FLIR/TV) is also mounted underneath the fuselage for surveillance purpose. Y-9JB has been speculated as an advanced ELINT platform similar to American EP-3. At least two High New 8 were constructed by spring 2012. The newly constructed aircraft now features two additional small vertical stabilizing fins on its tail. The first Y-9JB entered the service with PLAN in early 2013. Currently at least three are in service (S/N 9211, 9221, 9241). They have been flying routine ELINT missions over the East China Sea facing Japan.

Y-9XZ (PsyOps Aircraft)

[image]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iEzQ6FSOgPk/UsDtzrYJPGI/AAAAAAAAHI8/doeJlw9ldfI/s1600/GX-9.jpg[/image]

(This one would be quite important in a Taiwan Invasion-scenario, as China would use them to spread messages and propaganda throughout their communication networks to make the ROC military surrender)

quote:

It was first reported in October 2012 that a new psychological warfare variant (High New 10/Y-9XZ?) has been developed based on the Y-9 platform. The aircraft was rumored to have a new capability of hacking into enemy communication network. Therefore it could be used to interrupt the internet traffic or spread false information and create chaos through social network inside enemy territory by taking control of key web servers. Y-9XZ is believed to have entered the service with PLAAF in mid-2014 (S/N 30x1x?) and expected to replace the earlier Y-8XZ.

Y-9G (Standoff-ECM carrier)

[image]http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BzUs9oHOdLQ/VKSMya-g0OI/AAAAAAAAJ_0/NRvrCpD1tWU/s1600/GX-11a.jpg[/image]

quote:

A recent image (April 2014) indicated that a new ECM variant similar to Y-8G has been developed based on the Y-9 platform (Y-9G/High New 11?). It features a new chin radome plus three large oval and rectangular shaped antenna panels along each side of the fuselage as well as two plate antennas attached to the vertical tailfin. An array of blade antennas can be seen under the fuselage. This suggests a powerful, sophisticated and comprehensive electronic jamming system was installed to suppress enemy radar and communication, possibly using the phased array technology. Y-9G is expected to replace the earlier Y-8G.

[UPDATED/ADDED DB v437]

J-20 Prototype #2015 (First flight Dec. 2014)

2014 was a big year for the J-20 project. Four prototypes flew in that year, each being the 'pre-production' types with more complete mission avionics, beginning with Prototype #2011 that first took off into the sky on March 1, 2014.

[image]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tBgVcahSJZQ/VOJwIu8vWTI/AAAAAAAAKV0/DUmqvBgHqeU/s1600/J-20_2015.jpg[/image]
[image]https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EYM3LMSaDlc/VGM-XPU3vtI/AAAAAAAAJjU/_m2l_qZFtRI/s1600/J-20_2011j.jpg[/image]
[image]http://i58.tinypic.com/11rbwk3.jpg[/image]

We can see that the J-20 now features an F-35 EOTS-styled chin-mounted EO system, possibly indicating Multirole/Air-to-Ground capability of the final J-20 version, as well as modified control surfaces with clipped edges for improved VLO performance. Also, it does sport a completely new, silver-ish colour now, making it resemble the F-22/F-35, which suggests that the RAM coating has been improved as well (compared to the Black color of the previous prototypes).

An interesting arrangement of transparent windows have been identified to be distributed around the J-20's body, suggesting a similiar role as the F-35's EODAS suite (due to the similiar distribution)

At NAVDEX 2015 naval defense exhibition which was taking place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, last week, Navantia unveiled the F-538 frigate design it is proposing for the Peruvian Navy. Navantia representatives at NAVDEX 2015 told Navy Recognition that this new Frigate design is based on the proven AVANTE 3000/2400 design. This new design incorporates lessons learned in building the Spanish F-100, Norwegian F-310 and Australian AWS destroyers.

The scale model on display at NAVDEX 2015 showed the F-538 fitted according to the Peruvian Navy requirements. The informed observer will immediatly notice a quite unique weapons fit on top of the helicopter hangar: No less than three Close In Weapon System (CIWS) are present:
- 2x Rheinmetall Millenium 35mm gun systems
- 1x Raytheon RAM launcher (21x RAM block A1 missiles) between the two guns

Navantia representative explained that this quite unique configuration were part of the Peruvian Navy requirements.

Hmm... well

In Russian Navy Air Defence of ship is measured in so called "successfully repelled standart air strike"

for frigate it is 3 air raid in each 4 ARM + 8 ASM, also frigate AAD must denied enemy ability
to use guided glide bombs

looking at this ship AAD I really dont see why you so happy about it
enemy dont even need to use ASM/ARM against it,just cheap guided glide bombs (after all we live in age of JSOW,SDB,PBK-500U,UPAB family and etc.)

also I think only one FCR + SARH missiles=fail
yes RAM launcher is ok but too short range, if enemy atack with something like Kh-31 it will end quickly

but since this thing is not bought with my money [:)],
all this Marina de Guerra del Perú problems

I was actually thinking it was kinda sweet looking. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. I'm not trying to suggest your opinion is wrong, though Lion.

I'm becoming more fascinated with plane and ship design as it progresses. Ships and planes these days are certainly different than from my time serving.

I wonder what it would be like to spend a few days on one of the newest ships in the fleet, and compare it to what shipboard life was like from 20-25 years ago.

On a side note - holy cow that last sentence makes me feel so OLD as I read it.

You should contemplate what the ship is designed for. It is a Frigate sized vessel and also has 16 cell VLS with ESSM missiles. It is not designed to be an AEGIS ship able to engage air-craft at a distance.

Those 35mm cannons are also dual purpose and is a perfect choice for working in the Littoral areas and complement the 76mm canon quite well.

I presume a ship this size are primarily for patrol in the littoral areas with some defensive capabilities in certain situations as well as decent in ASW operations.

The purpose of a ship like this is not sea domination in any way.
