It's the Bofors that are the problem in the upgrade. The Casablanca has the same typo with the Oerlikons.

Late war question. Does the US continue to build the ships that were historically cancelled or slowed in 45? If the war isn't going as well these ships would have been built. Same question for aircraft being built. What about the A-1 Skyraider? Did you correct the US Bogue? CVE that when they do their update all the AA guns end up as 2 blocks on the RS instead 1 block on each side?

I don't plan to mess with anything in the Treaty Mod. The changes are totally within Treaty negotiations and are balanced. All that get added are prior to Dec 7th and then it is pure vanilla from the 7th to the end of the war.

Your question is better asked for RA and Between the Storms. In RA we've added at least 10 EARLY CVE conversions, added several additional cruisers, allowed building for the 3rd and 4th Alaska, as well as several additional carriers. Think things are handled there. Will look at the Skyraider possibility idea...

Could you further detail the upgrade issue with the Bogue Class?

John 3rd -> Air Art Query (7/2/2014 11:07:20 PM)

I have a semi-stupid question to ask. How does one open up the air art pieces? When you look, there are 3-4 million air sides and I cannot get it to open up and LOOK at the individual pieces. Need to add the nice work the Red Lancer did and cannot SEE numbers to set the planes into the correct slots.

Does that make sense?

HELP please...

oldman45 -> RE: Air Art Query (7/3/2014 12:23:12 AM)

John, it has been the bane of my existance, since this game came out. How to separate the aircraft like the ships were done.

John 3rd -> RE: Air Art Query (7/3/2014 12:46:50 AM)

I'm glad I have someone else who fells my pain! Need an answer though. Red Lancer? JWE? Bueller? Farris Bueller??

wdolson -> RE: Air Art Query (7/3/2014 12:59:56 AM)

You need some kind of decent image editor. Gimp is free. Photoshop works too.

Bill

John 3rd -> RE: Air Art Query (7/3/2014 3:19:29 AM)

How does that work with the actual file?

John 3rd -> Naval Placement on 12-7 (7/3/2014 3:50:21 AM)

The five members who are going through the Treaty Mod have had a conversation running regarding placement of the American BCs and CLVs. Here is what has recently been bandied about:

J3
What about placement of the two American CLVs? I’ve got them with the Pensacola TF but it might make sense to pull the CAs escorting the two reinforcement TFs (Pensacola and the one by Efate) and move the freed up CAs for other duty. Just a thought.

GP
How about one CLV at Pago Pago? With 4 DD and either a CA or CL?

NYG
Since you gave me the book, Racing the Sunrise, I think just a CA or CL should be with the transports. Nothing more.

CLVs with the BCs would be interesting. They would give the "scouting force" more eyes and a little more teeth if used that way. 2 BC, 2 CLVs, 4 to 8 DDs. Since you are given the Americans more of a presence in Philippines with added ships, maybe pull out the 4 old Clemson DDs not with a cruiser TF (south of Balikpapan). Maybe down at Sydney or with the CLVs.

J3
You mean use the Scouting Force as the SCOUTING FORCE? OK. I go along with the idea. WHERE would you put them? CINCPAC Missions on December’s first week:

1. Enterprise TF is sent to reinforce Wake.
2. Lexington TF is sent to reinforce Midway.
3. Scouting Force is sent to reinforce???? There are extra Marines at PH on the 7th---RIGHT? Where might they be sent to?

Interesting though
t.

Am curious of other ideas/opinions. The only bedrock assumption is that the BCs and CLVs are not present at PH the day of the attack.

We wrote Red Lancer for help. My wife tried and couldn't get it to run so...

wdolson -> RE: Air Art Query (7/3/2014 4:24:11 AM)

I use Photoshop which does things a bit differently than Gimp. I've looked at Gimp, but never really used it.

Each image in the file corresponds with an image number in the database. Look at the bitmap number in the database. The file is organized left to right, then down. Bitmap #1 is in the upper left corner, #2 is the second image on the first line. #5 is the left hand image on the second row. You can get an idea where you are by comparing the database bitmap numbers to what you're looking at in the file.

In Photoshop you will have to zoom in several times because by default Photoshop sizes an image to fit.

Open the new image, highlight it, then copy it. Paste it on top of the big image file and drag the new image to the right place. Photoshop does things with layers. Pasted images are on a different layer from the main image, so you can drag it around. When you get it in the right place, merge the layers together and save the file.

I suggest working with copies of the files so you can simply delete mistakes. Those image programs are the 50 tool Swiss Army knives, so it takes a bit of experimentation to find the right controls. Once you figure out what you are doing, the only annoying thing is managing the file size.

As I note in my previous post, the Bogue and Casablanca class have a typo in their upgrade stats that place their Bofors and Oerlikon broadside batteries respectively all on one side. Just open it up in the editor, and it's one click each.

RedLancer -> RE: Between the Storms (7/3/2014 7:28:19 AM)

John (& Mrs John)

My apologies I had assumed that given that michaelm’s ‘new’ functionality has been around for four years it was now de rigeur and everyone would be using Cathartes work.  Have a look at the document posted by michaelm in the first post of this thread.  http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2405660

What you need to do is:

1.  Decide on which slot number you are going to allocate the plane art to e.g. 0455  (same as ships really).  The easiest way to do this is when you are adding the aircraft in the editor make sure you have mapped the art file so the images appear in the editor and looking for the blank slots.
2.  Each plane has three files – for each aircraft rename them to the correct slot e.g. A_PlaneSide0455.bmp, Aptop0455.bmp and Aptop_alpha0455.bmp.
3.  If the AlliedPlanes folder exists in ART then drop them into there – if not create the folder and do so.
4.  Don’t forget to create the folders for the following years and add the files in a similar way.
5.  Much simpler than playing with the worlds largest bitmap.

wdolson -> RE: Between the Storms (7/3/2014 7:59:47 AM)

It is a rather unwieldy bitmap file.

Forgot Michael made it easier. I even use the mod. [8|]

Herrbear -> RE: Between the Storms (7/3/2014 10:07:58 PM)

Thank you.

John 3rd -> RE: Between the Storms (7/4/2014 4:20:30 AM)

Michael proposed a deployment option for both the Japanese and Americans today:

I've finally taken a look at the Treaty Mod.

CRB - You have CVL Tokachi & Kushiro along with CAs Hirado & Suzuka, but NO DDs. =-O I would move the 4 DDs from Osaka there as not to get involved with lots of re-shuffling of ships and/or TFs. Japan would have some DDs there with these large warships, IMO.

Scouting Force - The role of CVL Charlotte & Jacksonville will be to ensure a secure LOC with Philippines through the water south of the Gilberts and over through the Solomons where the Louisville TF (CA Louisville and 2 APs) are returning (off Santa Cruz Islands) and the Pensacola TF is leaving Canton. Create an Air TF with the addition of CA Indianapolis (from minesweeper TF at Johnson) , maybe SLC from Enterprise TF or a CA from Pearl, and with 4 DDs from Pearl. As an Allied player, I rather have my BBs soak up all those hits and leave my cruisers alone so they can leave with DDs asap after the attack(s). Thus, I don't really want to pull any out of Pearl for re-deployment for this mod as them getting damaged does help Japan out initially.

Marines - stay put!! Remember John 3rd, we are trying to NOT change too much but the addition of the new ships.

I'm trying not to get too much re-shuffling of ships with these new ships for this mod, but will think of doing more for the 'Between the Storm' mod.

oldman45 -> RE: Between the Storms (7/4/2014 11:21:03 AM)

I have to tell ya, the best birthday present I could get would be have the planes broken out so they sit in folders like the ships. Did I mention you have 20 shopping days till my birthday. [;)]

Just download Cathartes rotating planesides mod and you are almost there!

oldman45 -> RE: Between the Storms (7/4/2014 1:53:32 PM)

Thanks Red, I will take a look at that.

John 3rd -> RE: Between the Storms (7/4/2014 2:55:28 PM)

Just did some research on the Scouting Force Scouting Force composition on Dec 7th (Treaty Mod ADDITIONS in italics):

Vc-Adm Wilson Brown Commanding

BC
Ranger
Constellation

CLV
Charlotte
Jacksonville

CRUDIV9 Rr-Adm Leary Commanding
Phoenix
Boise
Honolulu
St. Louis

Helena

Other CLs
Richmond
Concord
Trenton

Underlined ships are wessels being repaired at PH on Dec 7th.

So....with Michael's thinking we actually use the Scouting Force to provide Flank Protection for the two transport TF making their way back-and-forth in the South Pacific. The Pensacola TF is at Canton and the Chester TF is SE of Lunga. How about we place the following ships somewhere in a position to support either TF: The two BC, the pair of CLV, two CLs from the list above, and 5-6 DDs? This would be a powerful TF in the South Pacific and really open possibilities for the Allied Player and really make the Japanese player be CAUTIOUS!

btd64 -> RE: Between the Storms (7/5/2014 2:02:42 PM)

John, That sounds like a great idea for the Wessels. But would the CLV's be with the cruiser TF's? GP

oldman45 -> RE: Between the Storms (7/5/2014 2:50:15 PM)

What was the final outcome for the Hawkin CLV. I was thinking that if the British transferred the two ships to Australia and New Zealand in the 30's in exchange for them paying for cruisers for the Home Islands. The conversions could be done in game. That way the Gladiators can stay in the game. :D

I ended up using Exeter as the template for the Brit CAV. The plan had been to have one British (Vindictive) at Trincomalee with a standard Brit development line for aircraft and then the Melbourne at Sydney with a more American line of aircraft development. Really LIKE the idea of the Brits pawning the other off on New Zealand! What do people think of that? Could simply start at Auckland...

The Sea Gladiators would be fun but I couldn't find any existing work to base their performance numbers on. I'd ask (again) if anyone is willing to take a stab at creating the stats for these venerable aircraft? If we made Vindictive a NZ ship, I could follow the improvement line of Sea Gladiator--Buffalo (US Lend Lease)--Martlet--Improved Martlet and for TB go Swordfish--Devastator--Avenger.

To RECAP:
1. What do people think of making the Vindictive a NZ ship and--if so--what name should we have?
2. Can someone come up with AE stats for the Sea Gladiator?

COOL!

John 3rd -> The Scouting Force Treaty Mod (7/5/2014 7:56:09 PM)

See below the image:

[image]local://upfiles/18041/D06F80995B0B4B2788034B79E362915E.jpg[/image]

There is real consistency with doing this deployment. It makes sense that nearly all of the deployed ships at sea on Dec 7th are from the Scouting Force, while the Battle Force--in its entirety--sits at Pearl Harbor.

We have at sea on Dec 7th the following TF:
1. Enterprise TF returning from Wake.
2. Lexington TF going to Midway.
3. Louisville TF with an AP and xAP near Luganville returning to the West Coast.
4. Pensacola TF with an AGP, AP, 3 xAP, and 3 xAK moving SW from Canton heading for the Philippines.
5. Vc-Adm Wilson Brown's Scouting Force covers the 3rd and 4th TF by being just west of Baker. ORDERS: Move SW for two days, patrol for 2-3 days at that position, and then return to PH after providing enough time for these two TF to switch positions and move past the closest Japanese bases in the area while having their northern flank protected.

Wilson's TF consists of BCs Ranger and Constellation, CA Indianapolis, CLV Charlotte and Jacksonville, and 4-6 DDs with longer legs (fairly modern).

How about that idea?

RL: I tried to work the plane stuff and am being fairly incompetent. Could I send you (or you use the plane info in DB-C) the Allied Plane Tops/Sides in a zip file and you load the new artwork? Sorry that I am fairly useless here...

Here's my attempt. The Sea Gladiator was a navalised Mk II, for which stats are difficult to come by, so it's a bit futzy.

[image]local://upfiles/16369/F7FC2591BD124A3D8087DB5916529F7B.jpg[/image]

oldman45 -> RE: Between the Storms (7/5/2014 9:11:36 PM)

I could think of lots of reasons not to, but I like the idea of adding it to the fleet, adding the gladiator and then sending it to the states for conversion to a CVL. As far as naming it, one of the major cities would work, or name it New Zealand since it would be one of the bigger ships in its fleet.
