The Guru -> must do check list as beginner Soviet player (12/24/2012 5:21:42 PM)

hi there

I'm just new to WithE and starting a pbem campaign as Soviet. What are the essential guidelines of Soviet restructuring in the first turns? Leaders, production, airforce, etc... any advice welcome!

By the way, do RR units help build up entrenchments?

Thanks a lot, merry Xmas and happy new year to you all!

A lot of thoughts on the subject are posted here:

Personally I like to put Zhukov in STAVKA, turn the support for STAVKA to 9 and all other land HQs to 0 and put the air force into reserve - all these things enable you to better reorganize your forces to your liking over the coming turns.

I tend not to spend much time or effort reorganizing a proper Army/Front command structure until after the Corps HQs disband (these will all go away in about 6 turns) - your forces are so hopelessly outclassed early on that having a proper structure (which is expensive in terms of APs) is usually a wasted effort; the possible exception being around Leningrad where real fighting can begin quite early.

Actually, is there no sort of compilation of all those threads that relate to first-turn guidlines (both for Soviet and Axis)?
There's a dauting amount of them to browse through, for those who are new to the forum ... and are short on time.

Get some experience vs. AI from either side, any scenarios, any campaign, etc. Then, uh, try the posts labelled Sov/Ger turn 1 guides. Can't go wrong. Helps to have any sort of experience 1st. There are no sure approaches, just some better than others.

While the pace of changes to the game mechanics and tactics employed(*) have decreased, all advice given in these threads are not timeless.

I agree with rrbill, get some experience to be able to pick the ones that will fit with your style of play.

(*) The systematic re-fuel by air tactic have opened up the South and South-Center, so the game is still dynamic.
