Iraq - strange surrender issue

Post by Will952 »

Scenario: I am Axis, opponent is Allies. Axis coup Iraq as per usual. Allies then recapture Iraq, again as usual. Iraq remains in Allied hands for a while until I am able to push far enough into the Middle East to 'liberate' Iraq. Allies then counter-attack out of Basra and start pushing on Baghdad from the South. A German army is garrisoned in Iraq with various supporting units to the North. A large Allied force approaches Baghdad, 4 abreast on the hexes immediately south of Baghdad, and the following turn I get a notification 'Army Surrendered'. My German army in Baghdad has disappeared and Iraq has been conquered (although Baghdad is not actually occupied by the Allies) meaning that the only Axis territory in Iraq remaining are the hexes that my remaining troops are actually sitting on. Everything else - including the rail lines and roads heading north - become Allied territory.

I am guessing that the game can't distinguish between the situation that follows immediately post-coup where Iraq flips Axis with an Iraqi garrison at Baghdad and anything that happens after the Axis is able to re-take the country following the Allied advance so there might not be a fix to this situation - but bringing it to light anyway.

Thanks for posting this and it is intriguing.

My first impression was that you must be right in your assessment, except that the script for Iraq to surrender can only fire once in a game, so if it fired when the Allies first marched into Iraq to reach Baghdad, I can't see how it could have happened again later on when a German Army was there.

So I'm a bit confused, unless the first time the Allies took Baghdad through conquest rather than by scripted event. I hope that's the case?

Yes...Will is correct (I am the Allied player). Axis coup, followed by British recapture with capitulation and plunder. Then, recapture by Axis. Later as UK/US force buildup allowed, I advanced toward Baghdad...held by German army unit; a couple of my units straddled the held city but did not attack. I THINK I may have controlled 3 hexes adjacent to held city at end of turn.

When my end of turn sequence displays were appearing, I'm certain one of them was some sort of scripted "Iraqi coup leaders..." or something of the sort---with an actual [plunderless] surrender of empty Baghdad displaying a union jack! There was (I believe) ANOTHER script presented at the beginning of my next turn showing the Grand Mufti embracing German colleagues in Berlin.

Ok, that is good then, in that it makes sense.

I'm not sure I can easily stop this happening though.

Bill,
Could you put a condition based on the unit owner (Iraq)? or unit type (GAR)? in Baghdad in order for the script to fire?
Or how about a condition based on if Baghdad could trace a friendly line to a port or Jerusalem?

The first might be possible, thanks Taxman66.
