Burning Gulf Scenario AGM 158 with EMP warheads?

Post by sven6345789 »

Hi, gave the Burning Gulf Scenario a try, which simulates a hypothetical military conflict between the USA and the Iran in the beginning of 2019.

You have a number of B-1 Bombers with two different types AGM 158 JASSM missiles. One of these two types seems to have an EMP warhead that does exactly one DP.

What are they good for?

My guess is against SAM sites and the like
Bougainville, November 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. It rained today.

Nice question, I hadn't used one of these before.

I haven't figured it out totally but I used one B-1B above Iran (made them hostile and used ad put "engage opportunities" on and it knocked out all kinds of electrical power grids down with the AGM-158B JASSM-ER [O-EMP].
But also effect on SAMs & AAA around Busher:

2-11-2019 19:39:44: HAWK is being hit by an EMP wave!

2-11-2019 19:39:44: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-51 ROR has suffered light damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:44: Weapon: AGM-158B JASSM-ER [O-EMP] #6465 has detonated, 3m from intended target point.

2-11-2019 19:39:44: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-50 PAR has suffered light damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:44: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-48 CWAR has suffered light damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:44: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-46 HPI has suffered light damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:44: Weapon: AGM-158B JASSM-ER [O-EMP] #6466 has detonated, 1,78m from intended target point.

2-11-2019 19:39:47: HAWK is being hit by an EMP wave!

2-11-2019 19:39:47: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-50 PAR has suffered light damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:47: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-46 HPI has suffered light damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:47: Weapon: AGM-158B JASSM-ER [O-EMP] #6469 has detonated, 4m from intended target point.

2-11-2019 19:39:48: Weapon: AGM-158B JASSM-ER [O-EMP] #6470 has detonated, 3,2m from intended target point.

2-11-2019 19:39:52: HAWK is being hit by an EMP wave!

2-11-2019 19:39:52: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-46 HPI has suffered light damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:52: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-50 PAR has suffered moderate damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:52: HAWK damage report: AN/MPQ-48 CWAR has suffered moderate damage.

2-11-2019 19:39:52: Weapon: AGM-158B JASSM-ER [O-EMP] #6473 has detonated, 4m from intended target point.

Had no time to discover what the moderate damage did to the effectivness yet.

So Electrical power grids are done after an attack but The Hawk SAMs suffer light damage and one had moderate damage.
On one occasion the missile detonated 0.56m from intended target point and did nothing to the facility. Why I don't know. I can understand you have to be precise to direct the energy but 0.56m??
One mission they all hit and the other mission they miss one after the other (13 missed and 4 malfunctioned).
And an AGM-158 is expensive ;-)

I tried to fire it on a hostile ship, but this was not possible (the ship laid still in the water and had no speed).

I also used one B-1B with the AGM-158 JASM-ER D-EMP. It sorted targets (# appeared at locations) but no missile was fired.
So this variant is still a mystery for me..
So no magical weapon yet ;-)

I'm curious of other experiences and TTP's to employ these.

I haven't checked it myself, but I think I remember, from back when the EMP model was first introduced, that EMP vulnerability actually increases with the tech level; with the older stuff being much more resistant to the wave.

Since Iranian HAWKs are of a pretty old model, it's possible that's the reason you see such lackluster results.

You should try a little testbed against a more modern SAM (Patriot, S-400 or HQ-9) and see if the EMP wave becomes more destructive against them.

I believe that D-EMP (directional electromagnetic pulse) weapons effects are restricted to the professional edition of C:MANO at this time (alongside communications jamming).
