Strange behaviour AIM-120??? (Air Engagement)

Post by Capocarro94 »

I notice that during AA engagement both planes at 36k feet, this missile (AIM-120) splash upwards up to 80k feet and start to descent to the target missing them too much, wasting a lot of missiles.
For the experts, this is the normal behaviour for this missile??? Launching, climbing to 80k feet 2500kts, starting descent few miles near the target???

What is the firing distance?

From 60 nm (max range) to close range 10-20 nm. When switch to Home On Jam, it starts to descend from 70k feet to the target's altitude.

I was here thinking that for some reason, the AIM-120 can't hit a darn thing. Played several scenarios. The hit % would finalize to about 50% or so, but the system keeps rolling high. Takes about 4 missiles to hit just one MiG-29. I gave up on thinking about his as part of the "chance dice rolls" system.
"No Sir, I don't think that's a good idea at all." -last words from unnamed NCO before falling into an enemy ambush.

It misses because it lofts? Ie. it is physically unable to reach the target? Or does it reach the target and is outmanouvered/decoyed/jammed/otherwise defeated?

Generally yes. You want the missile to remain as long as possible in the upper, thinner atmospheric layers to minimize drag. There is a certain tradeoff involved here because you don't want the descent to be too sharp, for a number of reasons. The precise ceiling varies on launch distance but the loft logic is fairly consistent.

I believe we discussed it in tech support but I have definitely had a number of missiles overshoot (as in no endgame RNG calculations) because of whatever recent changes to the loft mechanics occurred. I distinctly remember this being less of an issue previously.

Okay, that's a start. Can you please post a pre-engagement save file?

What does means "pre-engagement save file"?? Do you need .save file of the scenario? I ended the scenario, where I have noticed this "AIM-120 Strange behaviour"...

Yes he wants a save from just before the AMRAAMS were fired, its very difficult to solve a problem with just words.

From my experience i think that the problem is when the missile change to active and start to guidind for himself. Normaly the enemy plane when detect the missile incoming dive to a minimun altitude (in my opinion too excessive) and the radar cone of the missile dont detect the enemy airplane because the vertical distance. Even so if the plane that launch these missile is lightning the enemy plane the missile should receive the uptdates and be more acurate.
