Hello Big B, no problem, I'm having fun even in the first turns!
Btw, thanks so much for you mod [:)]

Malaya
Kota Bharu is in enemy hands, heavy losses (about 1000 casualties), now I need to react a little.

Philippines
Aparri and Vigan have been invaded.

I made a little ambush over Cebu, 6 Kates shot down.

China
Enemy DDs are chasing the Hong Kong merchant fleet, xAKL Halldor, xAK Haraldsvang, xAK Fatshan and xAK Hanyang sunk.
Hong Kong is under attack, fortifications reduced by 1, 1500 Japanese casualties for 500 Allied.

Wenchow has been visited by BB Hyuga and BB Ise, little damages.

Java
Other 2 PTs and TK Iris sunk by mines.

SS Warfare
SSX Ha-22 sunk close at Pearl Harbor, SSX Ha-14 damaged.
S-39 hit 4 times and need to be repaired.

Air Warfare
Four fighters lost on both sides, air ratio is 9:13.

Malaya
Night attack on Singapore for no damages.

Alor Star and George Town airfields out of service.

Kota Bharu hit by B-17s for very little damages, I need to launch more efficient strikes.

Borneo
British DDs intercept an enemy invasion TF but it was well escorted (CA, CL, DD, APD), DD Thracian lost for a DD with heavy fires and few other damages and casualties.

Miri and Brunei invaded.

Philippines
Another PT sortie, CS Mizuho has been torpedoed plus few other damages on trasport ships for no return fire!
Other naval engagements with enemy DDs, even if I have more ships and firepower the Japanese are decisively more efficient.

Clark Field airfield is bombed every day.

Vigan lost.

China
At the moment the Chinese (Warlord) Brigades are sitting ducks for his bombers, given that they are static units I have to find a way to intercept his attacks but my fighters and supports squads are not so effective yet.

At Kweisui I launched an attack, fortifications reduced for light casualties on both side.

Pacific
Wake Island and Kavieng invaded, the assault force on Wake sustained 1000 casualties for 30 on the Allied side.

SS Warfare
DD Ward and AVD McFarland sunk by enemy subs, he is doing a good job with them.

Air Warfare
Air ratio is 6:7.

CS reported sunk but I am pretty sure she is still floating.

If he hasn't taken Guam with the 144th Inf RGT yet it may be on it's way to Rabual instead.

Turn 5 - 12/11/41

Post by AlessandroD »

Guam has been invaded this turn, thanks for the advice anyway [:)]

Malaya
Again night attacks on Singapore but I guess are more dangerous for his Betty/Nells than for me.

Borneo
Miri and Brunei lost.

Philippines
Several naval skirmishes in the Sulu Sea rather harmless but we made the day intercepting an amphibious TF, 3 DDs returning to Soerabaja for repairs got an enemy TF with a very light escort and sunk xAK Atago Maru plus other 4 xAK/xAKLs with heavy fires and heavy damages, about 700 casualties (I guess a BF).

Dogfightings over Manila, P-40 and Zero are engaged continually, more Allied fighters lost but the enemy losses are increasing. Moreover several Bettys with no escort tryed to attack the airfield...now I have a squadron with 85 morale [:'(]

xAKL Elcano sunk by Kates.

xAK Hinsang and xAKL Kanchow interecepted and sunk by enemy SAGs.

China
AVG joined the game, 4 enemy fighters shot down at least.

Several enemy air strikes on my troops.

Hong Kong is close to fall, they are bombed every day and the fortifications drop at 1.

At Kweisui my assault reduces the forts again but I suffered more casualties (800 to 200), time to rest a little and to bring more troops.

Ichang returned Chinese, 1000 enemy casualties (3/4 destroyed) against 250 friendly, unfortunately they were 3rd line troops (RGC divisions) but I can push forward.
Of course I don't want the base, only a garrison will stay, and the 26th Group Army will start a guerrilla warfare until armored units will show up.

Pacific
Guam and Hollandia invaded.

KB bombed Midway Island.

Wake Island assault failed again, about 380 casualties (several squads destroyed) against 50 for the Allied, I guess other troops will come in support.

Kavieng hold.

SS Warfare
So far my subs are doing their best but or miss the target or get no explosions, but this time we got two ships: AV Kamikawa Maru torpedoed twice and xAK Kanko Maru torpedoed once.

Air Warfare
Really a great turn, air ratio is 8 (all fighters):37 (12 Zeros!, 8 Nates and 12 Bettys).

CS is reported sunk again but this time I have 5 Jakes lost in the ground column...I don't know what to think about this ship. Anyhow it is the first time that Japanese ship losses are greater than mine.

DEI
The Dutch fleet will join the Royal Navy, the submarines have been organized in three divisions.

Again the Air Fleet will try to buy time fighting an attrition war.

Palembang will be bolstered by 46th Indian Brigade (if time permitted), Batavia e Soerabaja the main strongholds.

I will try to save as much supply from forward bases and fuel as possiblle, the latter for the Australian ports.

BATAVIA is the key¡..very nice AAR; must watching; (less time to play WITPAE for me)

You should reinforce Batavia sending ships there if KB is at Pacific; send as much many airplanes too

@Zecke: thanks much appreciated, especially because my English is far to be perfect, how you can easily read [:)]

Batavia will receive the Malayan Air Force when all airfields will be closed, I will try to bolster it with others a/c from Philippines if possible.
The reinforcements will be send in India/Australia/Pacific areas.

@Bif1961: thanks! The date is included in the subject but I agree is better in the post.

Turn 6 - 12/12/41

Malaya
Several Japanese air attacks.

Borneo
Sandakan invaded.

Philippines
Davao and Naga invaded.

6 PTs, xAK Hai Lee, xAKL Yat Shing and xAK Ming Sang sunk by enemy SAG.

The Zero/P-40 challenge is on air every day, not so good for the Allied.

China
Sinyang retaken, 600 enemy casualties, now I have another army free to move.

Pacific
Guam and Shortlands captured.

Air Warfare
Air ratio is 9 (7 P-40):12

Turn 7 - 12/13/41

Post by AlessandroD »

Turn 7 - 12/13/41

Burma
Victoria Point captured (200 casualties).

Malaya
Another night attack on Singapore, I tryed to intercept these naval bombers with a night CAP but no luck (maybe the altitude difference was too much). Better to keep this fighters for the day time duty.

Alor Star airfield is heavily damaged, the base has been evacuated.

At Kota Bharu the Japaneses have about 25000 men and 100 fighters/bombers.

The 11th Indian Division will reach Singapore in its entirety.

Borneo
xAKL Joan Moller and xAKL Soochow were caught at bay while trying to rescue a BF.
From Palembang the Dutch aircrafts are retrieving the Kuching BF to speed up the fortifications.

Sandakan captured.

Philippines
Clark Field airfiled out of business, I'm not able to build any fortifications here.

I made a mistake here, I sent the 11th PA Infantry Division at Vigan to attack a lonely weak unit but unfortunately he has reinforced the base before my shock attack...oh well I don't think it will be useful anymore [:D]
Sometimes I have to be less aggressive!

Dadjangas invaded.
Davao (250 casualties) and Naga captured.

Another PT sunk, after the previous two raids my opponent is more careful.
AM Whippoorwill and AM Lark sunk by Kates near Manila.

Anyhow we have good news as well, a great day for the RN, especially for the BB Prince of Wales, my patrols spotted an enemy TF with a CVL in the South West of Davao and I sent a SAG TF (BB, 2 CLs, 4 DDs) to intercept it, the enemy haven't been able to runaway and the clash end with the CA Haguro sunk (a single lucky hit, magazine explodes) and the CVL Ryujo left with heavy damages and fires, on my side I have the CL De Ruyter and CL Danae damaged.
Even if he has other air asset in the area I will try to catch the light carrier in the next day.

China
In the South East of Ichang my pursuing troops slaughter the collaborationist Chinese units, about 1800 casualties for 350.

Pacific
I intercepted an invasion TF at Madang but the troops were already unloaded, anyhow xAKL Tomozono Maru #3, PB Gamitsu Maru #1, xAK Shinwa Maru and xAKL Taiyu Maru have been sunk.

Hollandia and Madang captured.

Kavieng still hold, 120 enemy casualties for less then 10 on the Allied side, great job by Australian troops.

KB is around Johnston Island.

SS Warfare
Inconclusive attacks.

Air Warfare
Dogfights went bad today, air ratio is 20:12.

Congratulations on a significant naval victory. Luck was on your side - those three Japanese CAs can usually outfight a single BB in a night action. Fortunately you had enough DDs and CLs to keep his torpedo attacks away from your BB.

There is a good chance Ryujo is a goner if there were any secondary fuel or ammo explosions so you might not catch the undamaged remainder of his force. Keep that in mind before deciding whether to risk giving chase into enemy torpedo bomber range.

@BBfanboy: thanks, surely luck was on my side because no damages on PoW and no ship sunk.
Several Japanese torpedoes have been launched but all missed the targets.

Anyhow it was a day time action [:)]

Little spoiler: I sent two SAG (PoW with the less damaged ships) and a new one with a CL and 5 DDs, they found the enemy ships (plus some transports) and the CVL has been hit again.

@Bif1961: yes, she has two radars (Type 270 SS and Type 281 AS).

Turn 8 - 12/14/41

Post by AlessandroD »

Turn 8 - 12/14/41

Philippines
At Vigan my poor division has been repulsed with 450 casualties.

Hoping to catch the enemy CVL I sent two SAGs (see post above) around Davao, initially the Prince of Wales intercepted only the transports: PB Nichi Maru #1, xAK Shinkoku Maru, xAKL Heiwa Maru and xAKL Ujigawa Maru sunk and another xAK badly mauled.
The other TF led by CL Marblehead found the CVL Ryujo scoring 11 hits for very little damages, both were night actions.
During the day, again the PoW, intercepts the escaping ships without the CVL and a DD, a quick battle with a Japanese DD in flames.
Even if she is still floating will be out of business for a long time.

An enemy SAG (4 CAs, 6 DDs) sunk the xAKL Paz, lot of ships around the Philippines, I think I have to change my plan about shipping out some units.

China
My ground units are bombed every day.

Hong Kong under heavy pressure, no fortifications left, should fall tomorrow or after tomorrow.

Two SB-III squadrons are doing recon training, to be blind is what worry me the most.

Pacific
Wake Island is not an easy pray, he is sending more troops here but my CD guns made a good job, 2 xAKL damaged and one in danger of sinking.

A CV TF was in range of his trasports from Solomons Islands but the bad weather prevented my attack.

SS Warfare
Again several miss or dud.

Air Warfare
Air ratio is 14:19
I'm thinking to change tactic here, now I will concentrate my fighters in few places.
His airfields are well covered and I cannot sweep and bomb them but at the same time he has few bombers in the forward bases therefore I can be more aggressive with my naval assets.

Logistic
All ships are doing their duty but few xAKLs that are disbanded in the ports waiting the reinforcements, all units with unrestricted command are loading in the USA for Australia and South Pacific islands. In 7-8 days I will buy an American division for Colombo.

I don't know why CA Myoko is reported sunk but I'm pretty sure she is not.

Turn 9 - 12/15/41

Pacific
The Wake Island heroes: enemy ships damaged and assault repelled with heavy casualties (850 with 54 combat squads destroyed).
I'm toying with the idea to send a little detachment to make hard even for a regiment to take the island.

SS Warfare
Japanese attacks: all successfull, Allied attacks: all missed the targets, quite annoying...but we still have some little gratifications:

Submarine attack near Tandjoengpinang at 51,86

Japanese Ships
SS I-165, hits 5

Allied Ships
xAKL Marudu, Shell hits 9, heavy fires

xAKL Marudu is sighted by SS I-165
SS I-165 attacking on the surface
Nagahama R. decides to submerge SS I-165 due to damage

I want this guy lead a BB [:D]

Air Warfare
Air ratio 14:2, bad day for my guys.
In the meantime I'm moving a recon, light bomber and fighter squadron to Burma from Malaya.

Turn 10 - 12/16/41

Malaya
Air battle over Singapore is started, heavy toll for the Japanese aircrafts.

Borneo
Meaning of war...a CM that hits a mine...

Philippines
Another two PTs sunk, no more convoys with light escort [:D]
xAK Ravnaas, xAKL Soerabaja and xAKL Escalante R sunk by naval bombers.

San Fernando and Bayombong captured.

China
At Kweisui fortifications reduced, 800 Japaneses casualties for 50 on the Allied side, close to fall if no reinforcements are along the way.

Then we both are amazed by the following attack:

Ground combat at 84,49 (near Hankow)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 31702 troops, 204 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1155

Defending force 12148 troops, 121 guns, 94 vehicles, Assault Value = 437

Allied adjusted assault: 529

Japanese adjusted defense: 185

Allied assault odds: 2 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
2063 casualties reported
Squads: 104 destroyed, 22 disabled
Non Combat: 146 destroyed, 32 disabled
Engineers: 9 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 17 (12 destroyed, 5 disabled)
Vehicles lost 95 (30 destroyed, 65 disabled)
Units retreated 3

Allied ground losses:
1125 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 112 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 4 disabled

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
67th Regional Army Corps
45th Regional Army Corps
32nd Regional Army Corps
68th Regional Army Corps
75th Regional Army Corps
26th Group Army

Defending units:
13th Tank Regiment
13th Division
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment

In open ground against tanks, artillery and a whole division my guys won a very important battle, not only for the enemy losses but because I'm forcing him to react losing the initiative.
No fortifications and low supply give me the edge because I think most of the casualties have been suffered during the retreat, and of course luck was on my side again!

Pacific
Tarawa and Kavieng lost.

Air Warfare
Air ratio is 12:44 (17 Betty, 16 Sally, 7 Zero, 5 Nate)
The new approach is working at the moment.

Turn 11 - 12/17/41

Celebes
This time he is chasing my damaged ships but luckily only found two xAKLs, xAKL Boelongan and xAKL Duijmar van Twist left the game forever.

Malaya
Kuantan invaded, for the first wave he used lot of barges but several capital ships were in escort duty, my TBs were able to go through the enemy CAP and scored three hits (only bombs for no real damage).
At Singapore the 11th Division plus some artillery units are waiting the final assault, all other bases have units to prevent a quick advance.

Philippines
Jolo lost, Luzon is almost encircled.

China
Needless to say that in this area there is lot of action, Kaoping is in Chinese hands with 2000 casualties for him and 500 for my units, of course I don't want the base per se but I want to interrupt the railroad connections.

At Kweisui my last attack take the base with heavy losses for the Japanese (1300 casualties and the 1st Cavalry Brigade wiped out vs 35), here my plan was to close the long road to Lanchow.

The next targets are Anyang (to isolate Keifeng) and Hwainan/Pengpu, again to interrupt his railroads.
I want a mobile force and don't get involved in long battle if possibile.

Green circle: bases captured (2 are dot bases)
Red circle: bases that I'd like to take with the only idea to delay the Japanese

Subscribed and following another important Allied AAR.

Thank you.

A couple questions on your observations vis a vis China:

Your game mod does look very interesting and I note the immediate differences in China i.e. South of Sian.

Sinyang would appear to be your critical 'shoulder' to base all spoiling attacks and ultimately your defense in Central China. You appear to hold it already with cushion and/or the mod dispositions are different than a stock game.

Is Sinyang a focus point ? Does the mod alter it significantly with Hi Li or other features ?

Thank you very much Macclan5 [:)]

In this area (Sinyang-Ichang) I don't think there are differences respect the stock scenario (maybe some little change for the units), anyhow I just want to delay the enemy and not to start a real offensive, a small army can be moved in the South, a big army will be difficult to keep supplied.
If the enemy bases will be well protected I will change my plans because I don't want the Central China, too difficult to stand against a well organized attack, and I'm not interested in a siege warfare.

In this mod all at start Chinese bases have enough resources and LI (plus a bonus) to keep the garrisons well supplied, therefore is more easy to recover the disabled squads, but is not true for the Japanese ones, Sinyang is worth nothing per se.
Of course to keep a huge army in continuous combat status is a different matter.
Also the Japanese Army is more restricted by garrisons duty and is not possible to move most of the units in offensive operations anymore.

Unfortunately in these days I won't be able to update the AAR because all my free time is devoted to this [;)] nevertheless we are playing every day and some naval battles are going on, I will do a complete summary when possible!
