A definite marvel of engineering. It wouldn't do for a sailor to be claustrophobic. Those are some very tight spaces surrounded by a lot of noise and dangerous elements, both moving and explosive!

Yeah did you see that ladder that goes all the way down? If one slip probably would have killed that sailor.

Thanks for that, really interesting. Gave me claustrophobia just watching it and can't imagine what the noise was like when they fired the gun!

Cool, on that same youtube page the Training video is a must see. Where you see actual footage of a crew loading the gun.

Where did you get this quote? I would like to read a bit more of context surrounding the statement.

Thanks.

No doubt, but what are the odds of ever slipping on a 60' vertical ladder in the middle of swelling seas in a tossing ship that is being pummelled by enemy shells or taking drastic evasive action to avoid kamikaze attacks?

And how many fellows do you think might be on that ladder at one time when the klaxon is blaring the alert to man your battle stations?

Almost couldn't happen, right?

Well there a chance there will be sailors on those ladders during battle station. They should have those ladders going down differently on each decks instead of straight up or down.

I did a summer as a tour guide on the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor. I cannot imagine what is must have been like with 1900 crew! we just have a few hundred people on-board and it feels crowded.

I've been to some pretty cool places that are off limits, other places you can't even dare go, it's too dangerous and there is asbestos!

Lesson for sailors stationed in turret: May as well stay at your posts manning guns. You aren't getting out if we go down.

Not only that, if those big guns going off, don't be near those ladders. And i wouldn't want to be station near the bottom either, if the ship goes down, there good chance you can be trapped down there too.
