Radar warning for incoming raid, but no radar present or near?

Post by Zebedee »

Hi guys,

really sorry for question, have tried searching but no joy.

My baby KB in an AI 're-learn the game' game is parked off the southern coast of Borneo. It's early March 1942. The Dutch have been futilely launching bombers against its CAP. A message keeps flashing up 'radar detects incoming raid'. It's definitely in response to the Dutch attacks on the TF. The problem is there is not a single radar set present on any ship. Visual Search only. The nearest land based unit is up in, erm, Bangkok and regions around there.

Is this just a glitch or am I missing something? If this has been discussed elsewhere, link to the thread is as good as a response. It's not hugely important but it's been the pebble in my shoe the past few days trying to figure it out.

Huge thanks in advance!

Japanese AA regiments have "visual search" and "sound observer" devices, which are both treated as radar with really bad stats. Later in the war they get upgraded to actual radar sets with better detection range.

I have had Allied planes shot down by flak when no flak is present.

I have yet to have a ship shoot at the moon yet though.[:D]

That one is perfectly fine though. There were numerous occurencies during WWII of planes shot down by conventional firearms not specialized flak. And most of ground units in the game have those.
Surely this was reported to Air HQs as flak job, but technically it was not

1. What is difference btw a) a TF with one CV having a radar b) a TF with several radar sets present in a many ships ?

2. Does having a radar help AA accuracy in the game ?

1. Each radar set has its own rolls against incoming strikes. Some of the Radars are not so good (esp. the Jap ones) - so you want as many sets and with the biggest range - to get the best chances to detect the raid and get CAP up.
The same goes for surface radars

2. One can suppose that DL of the incoming strike can help AA - but I really do not know how it is implemented in code.

That is strange, I would have mention the same thing if I didn't have radar devices as well. Should have switch to visual til the technology comes up to that date.

It's just flavour text really at a tactical level, and made me curious what was going on to the extent of leaving carriers lingering under LBA for no real reason to try and figure it out. Not that the Zero pilots were complaining about it. Had forgotten about device types, been a few years since I opened up the editor. Pretty sure it'll have been posted about before but a decade on and I still find the search feature here very hit and miss.

I could be wrong, but for me its more art than science, and no I haven't mastered the art.[:D]
