Using Ranges and Event Activated Features in Events Editor

Post by Mark Breed »

I am setting an event to cause storms with a range of turns. The idea is to set an event with an X chance of occurring over a range of 4 turns (weeks).

I want to have the storm, if it happens, trigger a Cease Fire event. If I set an event to trigger on a storm event that has an X chance of occurring, will it only trigger if the storm happens and will it only trigger on the turn within the range that it happens?

So, I do not want the Cease Fire to trigger if the storm event does not happen.

If the storm event does happen, I want the Cease Fire to trigger on the same turn (within the event range) that the storm occurs.

Does the Event Editor work this way?

Thank you.

'Activated by' would imply that if the Storm occurs then the Event can activate other Events. Test it to be sure, give it a 100% chance to see if it all fires as intended, then back it down to 20% and run it til it triggers the Cease Fire. If twenty turns goes by without triggering Cease Fire, then it seems not to work. [:(]

20 trials would be a good test, however, 20% means a 1 in 5 chance. 20 trials should yield about 4 storms.

Thank you gentlemen, but the question is not whether the event would trigger if the storm is triggered, but whether the event would trigger at the same time as the storm given the range of possible turns in which the storm would actually occur from the triggering event.

And, I am not looking for an answer of figure it out yourself by testing. If you do not know, I prefer that I get no response. I wouldn't ask the question if I wanted to spend the time testing it myself. If I get no response then I know that I have to figure it out myself.

Thank you.

Understood. It sometimes depends on the order in which events are arranged and trigger, so that is why a test is required, because we can tell you how to do it all day long and then you [or rather, other folks we have advised in the past] don't set it up exactly perfect and then it creates more confusion. So it's often better for us to point you in the right direction and then leave it up to you to get it ironed out, perfectly [:)]

sPzAbt653,

Are you trolling me? Because you do not obviously understand.

My question, put simply, is does an event with a trigger of Event Activated get activated based on the triggering event's check on percentage chance (which is checked on the first turn of the event) or the actual turn the event is implemented based on the range of the turns?

If you do not know or do not want to provide the answer, there is no need to reply.

Thank you.

I believe he is trying to tell you that short of making your scenario for you there is no way to tell you without you doing the testing yourself to see if something fits your needs.

BTW, if he was trolling you, you wouldn't have to ask if he was. [;)]

Here's how I made storms continuous in my Soviet Union 1941 scenario:

Bob,

Thank you.

Yes, I am trying something similar. However, instead of a Turn range of 1 in event 113, I am making the turn range 4 with a probability of 20%. So, I am trying to see if the storm is triggered in event 113 with a 4 turn range, will event 114 trigger on whichever turn the storm actually occurs (11, 12, 13, or 14) or will it only trigger on turn 11 when the percentage chance is checked.

Regards,
Mark

From the Manual:
Each Event has a chance to have an effect. In
most cases, this will be 100%. If an effect does not
occur because it fails this check, it is considered
“cancelled”. If the Event passes the check, it is
considered “activated”. This can in turn cause other
Events to be activated or cancelled. Each Event has
a Turn Range. In most cases, this will be one Turn.
If a larger Range is specified, the actual occurrence
of the Event can activate (with equal chance) in
any Turn from the Turn of triggering to that Turn
plus the Turn Range. The check for activation of
an Event with less than 100% chance to occur only
happens once, regardless of the Turn range. The
Activation Check is made first, and the actual Turn
of Occurrence is calculated after it is determined
that the Event is to occur.
Example: An Event scheduled to be triggered
on Turn 5, with a Turn Range of 4 and a chance of
activation of 75%. There is a 75% chance (one-time
check) that the Event will occur. If it does occur, it
will actually be activated on Turn 5, 6, 7, or 8.

RTFM.

I read the f'ing manual and did not understand. That is why I asked the question. But, instead of trying to help me, you continued to say set up a test. If you knew that the actual turn of occurrence was the trigger, you could have posted stating that it says on the turn of occurrence. But, no, you wanted to be a smart guy.

But, thank you. I have reread the rule and now understand.

By this example you give, with a 20% chance of the event actually happening. On turn 11 there is a check to see if the event activates with a 20% chance it will occur. If it passes that check then the event will occur in one of the following turns including the turn the check is made. So if it passes the check on turn 11 it will occur on turn 11 or 12 or 13 or 14.

Lobster,

I am sorry that we are not getting off to a good start here. I will try fresh.

The issue here is that no one seems to understand my question, which means that my question is bad.

However, having reread the issue in the manual, I believe that I have my answer.

I am creating a chance of a storm occurring in one-of-four turns. My next event is to create a situation that if the storm occurs, a cease fire will go into effect.

Based on my interpretation of the rules as written, the cease fire event (event activated) will go into effect on the turn that the trigger event (storm) actually occurs.

Thank you for posting the rule so that I could reread it.

Regards,
Mark

We are always happy to at least attempt to help. The event editor is a bitch.
