Military Doctrine in DUNE Universe

Post by rommel222 »

Greetings to All,
As a fan of the DUNE Sci-fi novels and movies, I am enjoying the new Wargamer article:
MILITARY THEORY: AN ANALYSIS OF WARFARE & TECHNOLOGY IN THE DUNE UNIVERSE
Blades & Shields rule!

My personal favourite literature.

I own everything ever written for Dune.
Wargame, 05% of the time.
Play with Barbies 05% of the time.
Play with Legos 10% of the time.
Build models 20% of the time
Shopping 60% of the time.
Exlains why I buy em more than I play em.

The only things I remember is:

Dont shoot a shield with a laser.
Everyone's internal monologue is whispery and really weird.
Sting and the Harkonnen's threw off a seriously gay vibe.
And if the Freman ever strip off those still suits you can probably smell them upwind.

I’ll say this, I loved Dune itself , and every “ prequel” by his son. However, every sci fi that tries to have swords/ hand to hand weaponry be the primary means of combat always feels very contrived. Dune did it the best, but it still feels “stretched” despite the deep history and lore. Simon Greens Deathstalker series was campy, goofy, and also disturbingly violent, and did it almost as well without any real explanation! ( well, blasters were powered by crystals that took a few minutes to recharge after 1 shot, so sword and bayonet charges were clearly logical:). )

Now Matrix, please remake Emperor of the Fading Suns ( and no real time crap either!)

Greetings TheGrayMouser,
Lots of so bad that their good(and many still bad) examples of Sci-fi with swords & metal shields on late night Sci-fi shows.
Still find Star Wars to much a Sci-fi Samurai sword film with light sabers fending off hundreds/thousands/gazillions of laser weapon shots.
But the space battles are like battle of Midway in space which are eye catching.
