[FIXED B936.11] Spruance Not Drifting

Post by Lanzfeld »

I have a convoy in "convoy 88" scenario and when I go to F4 for group formation menu I set my Spruance class as a sprint and drifter because of it superior passive sonar detection ranges. I make sure that it is not the group leader and then I close the menu. The Spruance will sprint as it should but it never does the drift. When I gets to the end of a sprint line it just circles cavitating around 28 knots.

The scenarios in the scenario download pack and maybe someone can look at this and tell me what I'm doing wrong

Speed and spacing can play a role. Could you post a file so we can see?

Thanks

I loaded this up to check and I see the same thing. I'll admit my use of sprint and drift is close to nil so far. I'll run it ahead and post a save also. It did indeed sprint far ahead of the convoy and then circle at 31 knots. That was the only ship on Spring and Drift. I'll have one of the Knox class do the same to compare. Save to follow.

[edit] Rebuilt the scenario to latest build. Save attached. Two sprinters out front circling at high speed. One is a Spruance, the other a Knox. Same behavior. Note also that the convoy lead, Dale, has dropped back through the convoy toward the last few ships (which has become disordered). Dale starts the game at about the 2 o'clock position of the convoy (relative to convoy course) There is one ship dead in the water off the back, with an escort. This happens after the game starts (no idea if that's a feature of the scenario as I've never played this one).

Thank you ultraDave,

My knox class seems to behave correctly. That is strange that yours is circling because only my Spruance class circles.
At the beginning of the scenario I redid the formation to my liking and I put the Knox and Perry's on the flanks in Sprint and drift and I had the Spruance out front trying to Sprint and drift but it wouldn't.

Maybe it has something to do with being out in front?

Dave and Lanzfeld thanks for the report and file. File clearly shows the issue. Units do seem to sprint but no drift..just twirl at 35 knts. Meanwhile rest of formation is averaging 2 kts.

I tried taking the formation apart putting it back together. Resetting as relative formation etc. No dice.

Adding to our list!

Ok created a smaller test scenario and the drifters seem to be the culprits.

If you delete them convoy maintain a steady reasonable speed.

Add them back but move them closer you'll see correct behavior until the convoy catches up and then it looks like the sprint and drift logic and maintain station logic trip on each other which is why things get driven down. You'll see the drifters and Lead slow. The rest charge ahead x distance then slow to try and get back into position.

Added to the dev note.

Outstanding!

Just for your notes my formation maintained the leader speed no problem. It was just the Spruance sprinter and drifter out ahead of the convoy that had the spinning a problem at the end of its sprint. I wish I could send you the file but I'm not at my gaming computer

Thanks for the heads up on this, guys.

There were two inter-related issues around how the group lead calculates the slow-down speed (to allow everyone else to form up). Both fixed for the next public release.
