The divisions inside the Russian Social-Democratic Labour Party see the minority faction – the Mensheviks - always struggling against the majority one – the Bolsheviks. Meanwhile border countries once part of the Russian Empire are considering the possibility of taking advantage of their former “Motherland”...

HoW15 - I don't like this, it doesn't work

Posted: Friday, June 12, 2015 by Daniele Meneghini

Imagine catching a flight to a distant city you've never been to. You leave in a rush, no time to read a proper travel guide. Don't know the language either. Don't know the local rules: this trip is going to be a nightmare, for sure.

The airport is your first test. And most airports are pretty good at showing the right information, making good use of symbols, guiding customers through the right paths and making them feel like they are doing the right thing and it's not as hard as they thought just before landing.

HoW15 - A War of Religions?

Posted: Tuesday, June 09, 2015 by Daniele Meneghini

Sometimes personal preferences about turn resolutions are dangerously bordering with orthodoxy. Something close to the Nadal and Federer debate (Federer for me, of course), Pasta and Rice, Beatles and Rolling Stones, Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson (well, both, in this case).

Play style is important. It can instantly attract or discourage players to even view product information. A tough choice that goes hand in hand with many other basic design choices that an experienced wargamer would spontaneously check to gauge his/her interest in a product.

Star Hammer is Released!

Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy is now available on PC and Mac!

Developer Black Lab Games focused on designing a unique sci-fi game with deep tactical mechanisms. Thanks to the simultaneous turn-based approach, not only do players have the time to think about their next moves, primary targets, and fleet positioning on the battlefield, but they also have the excitement to see the result of their choices during intense real-time sequences.

Human and Nautilid factions have very different assetsand superior firepower will not be enough to seize decisive victory when the enemy benefits from more units and better positions. So daredevil commanders will have to keep a cool head if they want to see the end of the war…

Pandora: First Contact Patch 1.6.0 is out!

Pandora: First Contact Patch 1.6.0 is out!

Posted: Wednesday, June 03, 2015 by Daniele Meneghini

Pandora: First Contact has been updated to Version 1.6.0!

This large free update tremendously improves the AI, overhauls espionage and rebalances diplomacy. Thanks go to community member Alexander Stumpp's hard work for making it possible. The update also adds the long-awaited French translation, thanks to Steve Torres. The AI will now play a lot more like the best human players play the game: expand slower, dynamically improve tiles, adjust the tax-rate, handle resource emergency situations, prioritize refitting, perform flanking and out-of-sight maneuvers, build more diverse units, effectively use artillery and much more.

To address the repetitive nature of the espionage mechanic, success chance for missions can no longer reach 100% and agents can now lose health even if they complete a mission successfully. To combat exploitative behavior when factions have cities close to eachother, agents now lose all their movement points when entering another faction's territory.

How15 - The Price is Right?

Posted: Wednesday, June 03, 2015 by Daniele Meneghini

There are always discussions going on about this topic. Every single release has its own thread on how expensive the game is, how it should be sold at a lower price to attract a wider audience, how a good discount would sell more copies, all the way to very strong opinions about how our business should be run.

It is definitely something that players are very sensitive about and of course not only in games. You can buy Vietnam '65 for the price of two beers in a decent pub and Order of Battle: Pacific for less then a dinner for two. Still, there is someone saying prices are too expensive, or various other arguments and they all sound prefectly reasonable and valid.
What is also interesting is the perception of prices out there. Matrix Games and Slitherine are perceived as companies that never discount games, despite a total of over 500 temporary price reductions per year, including a 7 weeks long Holiday Sale at Christmas time, an Easter sale including all releases and a massive number of other rebates.

We were succeeding. When you looked at specifics, this became a war of attrition. We were winning.” (William Westmoreland – Chief of Staff of the US Army from 1968 to 1972)

HoW15 - Why is this game about World War 2, again?

Posted: Friday, May 29, 2015 by Daniele Meneghini

Eastern Front is out fashion, they say. Ardennes are trendier these days. Pacific has been ignored for far too long and North Africa campaigns are not too popular, Husky is not doing too well and so it goes. But why are we always talking about World War 2, in the end?

There are interesting studies about this, that range from psychology to actual gameplay and customers behaviour analysis. One goes, for instance, that World War 2 allows a natural progression for players, from invasion of Poland to harder fought Operation Barbarossa, to get into gameplay mechanics gradually, in a historically accurate setting.

Reality is that World War 2 as a topic sells games. Or gives more chances for games to succeed in the market, at least. According to data we have on hand, which take into account over fifteen years of history, the only setting that's able to compete with World War 2 is Sci-Fi. So scienc

HoW15 - Does complexity define wargames?

Posted: Thursday, May 28, 2015 by Daniele Meneghini

What defines complexity, after all? Does a game for experts need to be hard to play? Over the years there has definitely been a race to add more details to the games. Abstraction has become an design target few wargames developers are willing to pursue, because it breaks the rule of historical accuracy, but is the real thing fun to play?
