Since the game’s release yesterday, Battle Academy has made its way onto the top 10 charts across Europe, including France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the UK, and the top 20 in the U.S. And that’s just after its first day! In fact if you dismiss the myriad of free to play games it’s actually charting in the top three!!!
The game has generated a wealth of discussions on many specialist sites and blogs for its premium price, but this hasn’t stopped it climbing the charts of Top Grossing iPad Games.
JD McNeil, Director of the Slitherine and Matrix Games group of companies said: “We knew we would come in for some flak when we released at a premium price point, but simply put we figure we know more about our audience than many of the so called experts. The received wisdom is that iPad games should be free and then milk the audience for all its worth with micro sales. We know this is a broken business concept, sure it might work for a lucky few, but certainly not in the real world we inhabit. My own view is that the sort of price points we are seeing are simply unsustainable and will lead to multiple casualties along the way. It’s a simple fact of life that you don’t get much for free and thankfully our audience is savvy enough to understand this. iPad is a great platform and as it matures I am certain that we will see a full range of games to suit all tastes, we are only at the very beginning of this process. This is not as some would have us believe, a one size fits all environment, and as the market leader in our space, it is our responsibility to invest in quality full size games that meet the demands of our audience. I am pretty sure that others can learn from this and have just been waiting on someone to take the lead”.
So far the momentum behind Battle Academy has been exceptional and shows no sign of slowing down. With cross-platform support in multiplayer, players finally have a wargame they can ‘play on the go’, and continue their battles through the Slitherine/Matrix Games’ impressive PBEM++ service.
