Back to News Listing Distant Worlds Legends New Screenshots, Features and a Space Creature Contest Winner!

Posted: Tuesday, October 25, 2011 by Sean Drummy

Type: Press Release

A new expansion to the award-winning space strategy game is headed this way!

Matrix Games and Code Force (www.codeforce.co.nz) are pleased to release some additional screenshots and gameplay information for Distant Worlds – Legends.  Currently in final testing and expected to release by November, Distant Worlds – Legends is the second expansion to the widely acclaimed space strategy game, Distant Worlds.

Announced today is the winner for the Distant Worlds – Legends Space Creature Contest! Fan submissions rolled in, with many quality submissions resulting in a real challenge for the judges!  In the end, the winner was “Silvermist”, a cloud of disassembling and self-replicating nanomachines, which will constitute a new mega-threat in the Legends expansion and become part of the Distant Worlds lore.  Credit for “Silvermist” and free copies of Distant Worlds, Distant Worlds: Return of the Shakturi and Distant Worlds: Legends go to Wadim Zasko.

The new character system is also unveiled in these new in-game screenshots from the latest version in testing.  Characters come in various types, from your faction leader to Fleet Admirals, Troop Generals, Scientists, Intelligence Agents, Ambassadors and Colony Governors.  While you start with few characters, events and the development of your faction in the game will create opportunities for additional characters to rise to the top.  A full-featured skill and trait system including positive and negative traits means that your characters develop based on their experiences and your actions.  Characters also only reveal their full abilities when assigned to missions or responsibilities that allow them to use their skills.  Characters can also perish due to time, accidents, events such as planetary bombardment or invasion, or even assassination. The character system, like the new expanded faction rules, is also fully moddable, allowing players to specify their own preset characters and images to tailor the galaxy to their liking.

Finally, Distant Worlds: Legends includes significant improvements to performance and memory management, as well as twenty two new high resolution shipsets, comprising more than 600 new ship options to add to the sets that were already in Distant Worlds and Distant Worlds: Return of the Shakturi !

Distant Worlds: Legends is the highly anticipated second expansion to the critically acclaimed 4X space strategy game Distant Worlds. Legends is a huge step forward which brings the Distant Worlds universe to life.  A new character system includes Leaders, Admirals, Generals, Governors, Ambassadors, Scientists and Agents, each with defined abilities and traits and opportunities to advance and grow over time.  Expanded gameplay for all existing races includes new race-specific events, technologies and victory conditions which create a completely different game depending on your choices.  An expanded tech tree also awaits, with dedicated carriers, cutting lasers, rail guns, new planetary facilities and wonders, and much more (including a new hidden faction)!

Distant Worlds: Legends also includes a new model for borders and spheres of influence for each faction, as well as new fleet management and automation commands.  The interface has been improved with additional overlays for the main galaxy map, including route indicators for all ships and fleet posture indicators, all to make it easier to keep track of activity and strategy. A new setup option allows galaxies to also be larger in map size as well as number of stars.  Empire Policies have been expanded with new options and Diplomacy has been overhauled to be much more intelligent and to include mining and refuelling rights.  Finally, the AI has been improved in all areas and modding support has been greatly expanded to allow modders to take full advantage of all the new features.

All of this together makes Distant Worlds: Legends an essential addition to the vast, living galaxy of Distant Worlds!

Please note: Distant Worlds – Legends REQUIRES ownership of the original full Distant Worlds game (including the Return of the Shakturi expansion).

HoW15 - I don't like this, it doesn't work

Friday, June 12, 2015

Imagine catching a flight to a distant city you've never been to. You leave in a rush, no time to read a proper travel guide. Don't know the language either. Don't know the local rules: this trip is going to be a nightmare, for sure.

The airport is your first test. And most airports are pretty good at showing the right information, making good use of symbols, guiding customers through the right paths and making them feel like they are doing the right thing and it's not as hard as they thought just before landing.
