Type: Update

A small but thunderous new update is now loaded and ready to fire!

Matrix Games and Adanac Command Studies are proud to release the comprehensive 1.34 update for their award winning WWI strategy game, Guns of August. The new update comes with a few bug fixes, including a problem with rail movement when a unit withdraws from a hex, and a rule change to the amount of naval units required to prevent an invasion from taking place in a port.

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said, “Guns of August has been on my hard drive for quite some time and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. The unique and rarely covered challenges presented by the First World War are fantastically modeled here creating a balance between fun and realism.”

Guns of August puts players in command of waging World War I at a grand strategic scale from Paris to Baghdad. The entire Western, Eastern, Italian and Balkan fronts are included as are the three fronts of the Ottoman Empire. Production, combat, diplomacy, research, trenches, fog of war, and not to mention land, sea and air combat are all included! Use land units like infantry corps complete with separate artillery units for precisely directing barrages on the enemy's line.

As time goes on, players must deal with changing combat situations like the introduction of Stossstruppen and even mighty tanks charging through lines to break through the stalemate! Guns of August fully supports a robust AI to fight against or play by email. Step back to the early 20th Century and hear the guns of August!

Get the update here. This update is comprehensive and will bring all previous versions to 1.34.

Strategic Command Blog Post #2: 'Artificial Intelligence'

Thursday, August 11, 2016

In 2002, the original Strategic Command game was a relatively simple construct. With a limited rule set and a much smaller 62x37 map of approximately 2300 hexes, the requirements for the AI were not necessarily trivial, but in general terms, they were straightforward.

Fast forward to today, and Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe has been expanded into a modifiable hexagonal game engine allowing map sizes of up to 512x512 or 262,144 hexes!

Strategic Command Beta AAR: First Moves

Thursday, July 28, 2016

Welcome to the first Beta-AAR of Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe.  This is a mini AAR, and as such, the AAR will only cover the inital shots in Gleiwitz Poland in September of 1939, to the fall of France in mid 1940.   Since the game is still in Beta, there might be some changes of the material covered between now and the final release, but the game already feels complete and the development team assures me that they don’t expect much to change other than minor items to ensure any final polish and balance to the main campaign.

Players familiar with the Strategic Command series will immediately notice the much bigger map. In the north, the passage around Norway to Archangelsk is ready for sub warfare, and in the south, a large part of Africa has been modeled as well.
