Posted: Thursday, December 10, 2009 by Sean Drummy

Type: Press Release

NATO symbols, Enhanced zoomed out views, and more await ambitious panzer commanders everywhere!

Matrix Games and Binary Evolution Studios (www.binary-evolution-studios.com) are proud to announce that a new update is now available for their popular turn-based WWII strategy game, Operation Barbarossa. The comprehensive 1.14 update comes with beautiful new 2D NATO symbol counters that can be toggled on instead of the 3D unit graphics for increased visibility, increased zoom both in and out on the battlefield for better awareness, a few AI improvements, and some bug fixes.

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said “There’s nothing quite as intense and engaging as the Eastern Front of World War II. Operation Barbarossa is one of the most accessible historical strategy games we’ve released and it serves as an excellent introduction to wargaming as well as a fun challenge for veteran wargamers too.  We also have an updated demo for those who want to test the water before jumping in.”

On June 22, 1941 an avalanche of 153 German divisions crash into the Soviet Union and the largest military operation in history is begun: Operation Barbarossa. In this elegant turn-based strategy game, compelling gameplay combines with gripping history to create an addictive mix.

Aimed at all levels, from those who have never played a wargame before to those who know the history of World War II in detail, this is an entertaining and mentally challenging game of combined arms strategy.  Your armor, infantry, artillery and air units will follow you through the most crucial battles of the Eastern Front.  You will be able to choose from 47 different upgrades and improvements for your units as well as add new forces based on your success in the campaign.

Take command in two German and one Soviet campaign as well as individual scenarios and determine the fate of the Eastern Front.  When you’ve played through all the campaigns and scenarios, try your hand at the editor to create new scenarios for yourself or to share with others!

Get the update here. This update is comprehensive and will bring all previous versions to 1.14.

Strategic Command Blog Post #2: 'Artificial Intelligence'

Thursday, August 11, 2016

In 2002, the original Strategic Command game was a relatively simple construct. With a limited rule set and a much smaller 62x37 map of approximately 2300 hexes, the requirements for the AI were not necessarily trivial, but in general terms, they were straightforward.

Fast forward to today, and Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe has been expanded into a modifiable hexagonal game engine allowing map sizes of up to 512x512 or 262,144 hexes!

Strategic Command Beta AAR: First Moves

Thursday, July 28, 2016

Welcome to the first Beta-AAR of Strategic Command WWII: War in Europe.  This is a mini AAR, and as such, the AAR will only cover the inital shots in Gleiwitz Poland in September of 1939, to the fall of France in mid 1940.   Since the game is still in Beta, there might be some changes of the material covered between now and the final release, but the game already feels complete and the development team assures me that they don’t expect much to change other than minor items to ensure any final polish and balance to the main campaign.

Players familiar with the Strategic Command series will immediately notice the much bigger map. In the north, the passage around Norway to Archangelsk is ready for sub warfare, and in the south, a large part of Africa has been modeled as well.
