WPO Beta AAR: Sprior(IJ) vs Belphegor(Allies) Campaign 1.

Post by sprior »

After poking around decided to use the automatic first turn with the exception that the forces ear marked for Batan Island have been re-directed to Tacloban.

Note that the Japanese no longer have the extended move on turn 1. here are the TFs currently at sea:

High surf on those beaches! Plus the Elcano must be pretty damned good to take on 4 DDs and still come off best...

Elsewhere a bombardment TF en route to Guam (why?) is diverted to support the Wake landings.

Now if I can just work out what I'm supposed to do with all those troops in Truk...

Japanese Arrive Off the Philippines!

Elcano expends all onboard ammunitions and drives off a much larger TF!

"The IJN doesn't seem to have much stomach for a fight" claims the jubilant captain of the Elcano receiving the accolades from command and a grateful population.

screenshot shows the TFs disengaging, the range started much closer...

Elcano finally bites off more than she can chew and is bitch-slapped into next week.

Surf still high but from what I can see of amphibious warfare 1922-style it was basically armoured lighters and ship's boatd to get ashore in, not more removed from Gallipolli.

Big surface battle off Lingayen, still not sure who came away with the honours from that one:

The surface battle off Lingayan went through 4 engagements and withdrawals, but the laurels will have to go to the IJN and their better shooting this time.

The Elcano sinks with all hands, but will live on in USN lore as she was last seen chasing a dispersing Japanese Landing force escorted by at least two CLs and 4DDs away from Vigan. I didn't catch the Japanese order to disperse the ships, but I did catch this message.

last ride of the PGs! (I hope). Meanwhile serious surface interdiction nr Lingayen. Again no clear winner as the escorts valiantly keep superior forces at bay.

First sub attack of the game. 2 torp hits on a CA do this:

There are so many IJN ships. My major TF in the PI has had to retire due to lack of ammo, and attrition. Each battle takes away at least 1 or 2 escorting DDs and leaves my capital ships more vulnerable.

S-14 puts two torpedos into the CA Nisshin, I'm hopeful she won't make it home.

Transports have left for the PI, bringing relief in the form of supplies, coal, and fighting troops. Can the USFFE hold out?

Meanwhile the main American fleet is preparing for Sea.... in about 3 weeks time.

A much quieter turn, although note we lost more troops in the uncontested landing (Butuan) than in the contested (Davao). Also noteworthy as the 1st turn the RN shows up.

I have to admit that I have no clues about what to do in China/Manchuria...

I too am at a loss about what to do. I suddenly discover 6 turns into the game that it is a very long way to Australia with current cargo ships. I am going to have to plan out a series of hops between islands and protect those lanes.

Japanese landing forces are starting to overwhelm the PI in general.

The French, concerned for their own interests in SE Asia decide to help out their American Allies... DD escorts happily provided by the US Asiatic Fleet.
Shuttles of combat TFs move to and from the invasion sites.

It is disturbing how fast the Japanese are taking over my bases in the Philippines. Definitely happy with how the surface actions are going. I'm not scratching the transports due to their escorts engaging me but I am causing damage to his warships. Granted, I haven't come up against a similarly sized force since the first encounters off the coast of Lingayen in the first days of the war.

I've begun the conversion of AKs to Q ships. With all the supplies I am going to need to haul, and no air recce to speak of; I certainly don't want to spend a lot of time escorting every single transport TF. Q ships are the answer for rear area transport protection.
At least I hope they are. Notice the crew experience. It certainly needs a little improvement before I give them live ammo.

It's good to see the IJN BC at Wake. And bad.

I'm happy that they aren't around the PI right now. I was dreading their appearance off the invasion beaches and a naval battle that would have gone against me. As it is, a CA force did find my now combined Franco-American TF. Shown is the DD Dorsey, lost later in that battle to a magazine explosion. On the way to this particular engagement the TF encountered and sunk 3 IJN transports.

CA Nisshin is reported sunk; finally succumbing to her torpedo hits.

the quick loss of Wake is worrisome. Midway is an obvious next target, and I am nowhere near ready to defend it.

IJN Battleships arrive at Lingayen. they look old, but they still packed a punch. I don't think I hurt them much. My CAs however are out of the immediate fight and I must surrender the northern seas around Luzon to the IJN. My subs will stay however.
