they are like a virus and soon Matrix will sell also Ego Shooters and Flightsims ...
hope Matrix will not ruin their name with action strategygames.
There are so many distributors who sell RTS games, I want at least on last who bring us "roundbased games" (Doesn't matter which genre)

So maybe I of the enemy could also have a "roundbased" option ?

Anyway even I will not buy it if it is one that &%&$&% RTS games, wish you luck.
(Okay the only useful RTS games are from Paradox )

We at Matrix are fans of RTS games. Matrix has and will produce many different types of games including more RTS games in the future. We feel I of the Enemy is a very good strategy game and should be judge on its game merits and not just if it RTS or not.

"ruin their name"???

Hey if you don't like the genre then just ignore it. There's no need to go tar-and-feathering a product just because it doesn't push your particular button. I can name certain ancient-era eye-candy miniature-based computer games published by Matrix which I certainly won't be buying but that doesn't mean that its a bad thing for Matrix to put them out to market.

Matrix has the right to publish what it likes.
You have the right to choose what you buy.

Lets not start genre wars... they have a bad habit of getting out of control.

I prefer RTS over turn based, I ran across IOE demo and
D/L it. The game was different then most of the RTS games
I've played. Now that Matrix Games is going to sell it for
them. I'm hoping others RTS gamers will buy it. I haven't
hear of Matrix Games, until I read it on the IOE web site.

I mostly buy my games from EB or I get them when I'm getting
ink for my printer at CompUSA ...
IOE is a good game and I plan on getting it. I'm hoping others
will do the same. It's up the Matrix Games now, if this game
makes it or not.

I'm still a loyal to RTS games....

Bottom line ... I need to look at Matrix Games lineup to
see if there is anything I might like ...

HI

I usually get sick of most RTS games pretty fast due to all the time spent gathering resouses but this is not a typical rts game.....this game is all about strategy....a really challenging game..........anyway everyone has a right to buy any kind of game they like...

Yeah, but at least resource management breaks the monotone of sheperding around a group of "the most advanced fighting machines known to man" that have less coordination than a soccer team full of blind five year olds...

Matrix has already sold at least one RTS: Highway To The Reich.

All the best to Matrix, it's up to them to sell good games. If they deviate from their historic base or wargmes, it's not the end of the world. Even if they were to drop them completely (I'd hope not!) to release other stuff, another group will spring up to cater for the specialised wargames community anyway. You'll probably see nearly all the same people, just on a different forum run by a different company.

To bastardize a famous quote: "I may not like RTS games, but I defend Matrix right to sell them!"

If Matrix has to sell 10 games I'm not interested in to get the funds to develop 1 game I am interested in, then let them hop to it. I'm not worried that they'll be infected and start making 3D beat-em ups and FPS's.

For anyone who's worried, if you have an extra $20, give it a try. It's not a garden-variety RTS and actually does include tactics and a focus on something other than resource-gathering and "rushing". The storyline is good and the missions and cutscenes are interesting. There are a lot worse ways to spend twenty bucks.

Regards,

- Erik

For the life of me, I can never understand people who use glittering generalizations. Are there bad RTS games? Sure. Are there bad turn-based games? You bet! To grossly attack either genre per se is indicative of narrowness.

Furthermore, the line between RTS and Turn based is narrow. If a turn-based game has automatice defesivve fire, that smacks of RT. If an RTS allows commands to be given while paused (not to mention speed control, don't players have essentially the same control they have over units in a turn-based game?

You can try any comparison you want but a pausable RTS is NOT a turn based wargame ! The philosophy of both games are completely differents. Some people like RTS, some people prefer hex-wargames.

In a turn-based game, action stops and the player can react to opponents' moves or change their own tactics/strategy. When paused a player can do the same in an RTS. Can you elaborate on your point?

What's the "philosophy" of Highway to the Reich or Armored Task Force then? Both are "RTS" games but their philosophy has far more in common with turn based wargames than Starcraft or Age of Empires.

The best games are often those that refuse to acknowledge any genre, and create their own.

Well said. However, we are forced to use the terminology foisted upon us. Bad mouthing any genre per se is a worthless excercise.

Yes for sure. But I also could say that "steel Panthers" is much closer to "Dragons and Mages ", (say a hex-based heroic fantasy wargame) than with Higway to the reich. And "Highway to reich" has much more in common with "Warcraft" than with "WW2 Online"...
Don't make the confusion between the game theater and the game engine...
That said, HTTR is a good wargame :-) But aren't we talking about "I of the ennemy" ?

What I try to say is that we should only compare what is comparable :-)
In my opinion what "turn-based-hex" gamers like is PC adapations of old board wargames. The pleasure comes from moving unit counters on the map, throughing dices (press end-of-turn) and carefully watch a full page of numbers stating the combat's results. etc.

And all that should replicate old board wargames the best possible (decisive battle system is a good example because we even see the die results!). That's why I think that you cannot compare. Hex-based wargames are definitely a separate field for old nostalgic guys like me :-)

Its the stigma of the "Title" that gets people up in Arms. Real time strategy makes people think of Starcraft, command and Conquer and the rest of the lot.

I do not think Highway to the Reich or even worse a Paradox game that literally takes weeks even months to finish, should be lumped in the RTS class. Especially Paradox games where things really creep and players do not even need to pause if something like your kid crying or the long hair general wants you to take out the Garbage. I have went to the friggin Grocery store m'lady while playing Victoria MP(Victorian era Paradox game) to get some milk! I do not think that gaming experience can be compared to a session Warcraft III !

I Downloaded and played around with I of the Enemy Demo and it was good. Seems very story driven and involved. The game does stress tactics, just not enough for a grognard like me, not my cup of tea. Running over Frenchman while strikeing a vogue pose in my Panzer is.

People should download the demo and just see for themselves.

Also, some thing people seem to not consider is the support these smaller/independent game studios need to survive. Niche gamers like us really depend on these type of Developers to bring us the games we like(small market niche games!)
