Playing Scenario 9 and discovered the CVE Taiyo (capacity 30) comes without air groups. There are no carrier trained air groups not already deployed on a carrier. What's the best option?

1) Put a carrier capable air group on the Taiyo. (Will they ever become carrier trained)?
2) Wait until I have an air group with no carrier...
3) Wait for a carrier-trained reinforcement air group, although I can't tell from the air reinforcement display if there is such a unit.

Man this question has been asked a bunch. Transfer a Kate sqdrn of 27 a/c on her and let her go to work with other baby CV's. She only has 90 air strike points, but that is still almost 4 full strikes. Or you can stick a Val group or Zero group on her.

You can use her to transport an airgroup to another air group so that they arrive undamaged.

You can use her as a decoy. I would not advise this one. You will get a few more baby CV's that have no airgroup also.

Agreed, tossing an extra air group into a weak CVL/CVE Task force to tone up the punch power is quite effective. 27 extra torpedoes potentially being launched could be the difference between victory and defeat.

Just remember to not set any search level ... keep the planes locked to 1 specific mission so the few strike points don't get wasted. Operational losses only happen when flying. With the low number of missions capable, you will not loose too many aircraft. An aircraft lost for a torpedo in the guts of a ship is a small price to pay.

If you want to use it as a transport, remember the capacity in this role is 200% (60 aircraft)

I thought Naval Search didn't use Sorties?

The transport capability of the Jap CVEs should not be neglected IMHO. It's an awful lot of hops for some short-legged planes (e.g. Claudes/Rufes) to get down to the Truk or Kwajalein area. You have to go via Bonin and the Marianas etc.

I use the Taiyos to carry a6m3 groups. Use them on 100% Cap in your tfs. Then all your other carriers can use their fighters for escort. The one group will meet most of your cap needs and allow your best fighters to reach the target

Thanks much for the responses. It sounds like being "carrier capable" versus "carrier trained" isn't a huge penalty, provided you take it into consideration.

Sorry about that. I tried to do my leg work, but got zero hits on "Taiyo" and nothing useful on "carrier and trained". Is there an FAQ on how to best search this forum? I have enough trouble keeping up with the interesting thread titles.

I use the CVEs without native plane groups to either augment the offensive punch (carry Kates) or its protection (carry Zeros) or if you're undecided carry both - 9 of each... Make it a true baby CV by carrying 9 Zeros, Vals and Kates... Its possible as there are several small chutais (9 planes) in Home Defense at game start.

But early in the war having more Kates is better as you will only face light air opposition unless you send the baby CVs against a heavily defended target... Load up the Kates and raid the DEI for merchies... You will do well..

From an Allied side, can you do this with the Long Island? Or is she still as worthless as she was in UV. Right now I have her on convoy escort from the States to Noumea.

Think Fuel, not Sortie points ... they are pretty short legged in both areas.

Confining them to strike only missions means they also save on fuel use.
