The Next War "Tension" (original) Hellen WP v. Larry NATO

Post by Hellen_slith »

Civilians panic (again) when all non-military air traffic over Pact Nations is suddenly grounded.

The Baltic Fleet is on the move. Soviet 8th Guards Army is reported moved toward the WG border at GOSLAR.

{sota voce Captain Kirk}:

Mankind ... is once again ... at war.

I rolled a 10, looks like. That mean Pact has to declare war by turn 10. Can declare earlier, but must declare by move 10? Sound reasonable?

Ok, Pact is moving. I tried to screenshot the dice roll, but I am klutzed out right now.

So here is a picture of a cat.

Ok, well, GOOD LUCK LARRY <handshake> and let the best ideology win!! Looking forward to it.

New moves from Damon and he has moved his units closer to the Western Allies and if I had half a brain I'd start building my MLR on the border. I'm going to have to give up Berlin I'm afraid...I don't see a good way to hold onto it. I can fly some supplies to them but they are a small force and probably won't hold out long.

I'm making a playlist of youtube videos for my gameplaying sessions and here's what I have so far ( on the left side of the image ).

The first thing I do when I get some new moves is disembark everybody and redeploy the planes to better positions if need be and rest the tired ones ( the yellow ones ). Also, some of these aircraft have a range further than the map extends and I don't need all that. I take a minute to trim the ranges on the aircraft to just match the area I want them to operate in. So far that includes the entire map. I'm putting most of the planes on AS because I need to fight hard for aerial superiority as the first task. The rest of the game will go a lot easier if I can be the only side flying missions.

This is the view at the start. I've been looking around and moving some units. I set all my aircraft on "rest" so that there wouldn't be any air war stuff going on. I'm trusting Damon to do the same.

Here is the map from Pact POV. I have found that moving these Pact units uses a lot of their supply unless I rail them or put them on helos ... trying to get them to the front in full condition, but the rail lines are PACKED (Ha Ha, like "Pact" ... LoL)

Ok, well, printed below are some thoughts about where I might bring the heat. Berlin is a wash, man. I would try to disband those units and put their goods back into the replacement pool. Berlin is too nice of a city to destroy. Maybe even try to fly them out? Not sure if that is even possible, but it bears consideration.

Looking at my reinforcement schedule, it seems like maybe turn #7 or #8 would be a good time to declare. That's a double-edged sword, though, trying to find that slight edge (if any) b/w the PACT and NATO reinforcement schedule. I'm hoping that my allies stay in it when the time comes.

Here is the map after Pact move 4. Looking at my points, I'm going to have to get all those circled areas AND Denmark and everything in between to have a chance at victory in this one.

Here is the map after Pact turn 6. Hostilities have been declared. New battle plans from Moscow. Keeping my fingers crossed that EG/Poland/Czechs stay in it. Air assets look a bit thin to me. Not sure if those totals include the garrisoned units. I hope not. At least I have plenty of tanks. Need to get them moving before the troops drink up all their vodka again.

Is that list in the lower right all the aircraft you have? I'm wondering how long it's going to take me to shoot all that stuff down. I've got all my aircraft on three-dots because their proficiency is high enough to justify it. Between 80% and 100%. A couple of units on 100%. So I'm hoping for aerial superiority to make the difference on the ground. I'm badly outnumbered on the ground. This should be interesting. I haven't been moving a lot of the NATO units around to conserve their supply, to cut down on the minor losses that occur with moving a unit, and to preserve the dug-in percentage they have been accumulating these past few turns. A lot of the entrenchments are at 100% already. That will help when defending against the WP tanks. I'm depending on my helicopters to do a lot of CS. I'm hoping I can protect my helicopters with my fighters. I hate it when helicopters are shot down. It's a waste of a good aircraft. I can always train more crewmembers.

Yes, I suspected that the little movement that I could see from the playbacks was from NATO units digging in ... you have a much better position than I thought, now that I've got to roll it forward.

Well, I plan to use a highly mobile attack, "blitzkrieg" style, hoping to serpentine my way through to NATO's rear BRHDs and REFORGER hexes. Of course, Denmark is my first priority, to take them out and then veer south along the coast of Netherlands <fingers crossed>

Do you have any info yet on PACT disaffections or NATO stance?

Is France in it? Looking forward to the battle!!

Yes, but I *think* that total is only the non-garrisoned unit count. I.E., does not include EG / Polish / Czech aircraft (which would up the total significantly.)

If he gets any more aircraft then the fight in the air just becomes that much more difficult. I'm no longer assured that it's at least an even fight. This may turn into a rout after too long. I'm already outnumbered on the ground. This may get more interesting than I had planned.

Here's a C-5M with a 30,000 Kg load of artillery ammo taking off from an airbase in England headed for Ramstein Air Base in Germany. They will be joined over the channel by a flight of F-15's to act as escorts now that hostilities have started. This model of the C-5 is the last of the upgrades to be done by Lockheed Martin thus ending the saga of the Super Galaxy one of the largest aircraft in the world. It costs $1.6M per hour to fly it making it one of the most expensive aircraft in the world to fly. But it can carry staggering loads for long distances and can land on roads, or unprepaired fields. It cruises at 571 mph and it's range is classified.
