Unplayable on TWO Laptops...

Post by BeirutDude »

So I was working on something and wanted to go into Conflict Middle-East and this thing won't start in two laptops an HP and an ACER. I find it interesting it is locking up in both and slower than hell before it locks up.

Actually THAT seems to be the problem. I am on the HP right now and I unloaded the program and am reloading it with the 2.00 installer, but YES it was at 2.01. I seem to remember it playing OK the last time I went into it, but Maybe that was 2.00? Been a long time since I was in this game.

Please do the following:

[*]Empty the CSME Logs folder.
[*]Launch the game, in the usual fashion, from the frontend launcher.
[*]When it "locks up", while still locked up, wait several minutes, then...
[*]Zip up and post here the entire contents of your Logs folder. Important: Do this while things are still locked. Do not exit the game, or take any other action to interfere with the game. Just take, and post here, a snapshot of your Logs folder mid lockup.

We will take a look.

Well right now, it is reloading version 2.00. lets see what happens when I update to 2.01. Maybe something got locked up. I was one of the original users so maybe there are old files, etc that are corrupting it.

It is also possible that your AV software is intercepting and blocking launch. Please investigate that possibility too.

BTW, how much memory do these laptops have? If 4 GB (or less! [X(]), note this program: Middle East_no3D.exe. It is specially designed to deal with memory-poor systems, especially laptops. (When I used to play CSME on my Linux netbook, the only way I could play the game, no 3D, was by that means. Otherwise, yes, for me too, the standard 3D version would also lock up.)

That could be it, they have been around a while and I'm getting ready to buy a new one and pass down to the kids. 2.00 is playing fine under the default but lets see what an update to 2.01 does...

I bet it is the memory issue. On old laptops with <= 4 GB RAM, you may only be able to play the game -- launching with Middle East_no3D.exe -- sans 3D, 2D only. The no 3D version was definitely first introduced with 2.01 (to deal with the heavier graphics overhead in that version).

Well I just tried that version and no joy...

So you are not actually launching the game engine; the lock-up occurs in the frontend?

What about this?

It's not as likely, but still possible: Some intervening (2.0 > 2.01) Windows update has mucked with the game operation. We have a laptop here that, apart from any memory issue, was unable to run the game properly. (In fact, that originally Windows 7 system was so FUBARed for ordinary Windows 10 operation (after an upgrade) that eventually I had to pave it and remake it as a Linux system.)

With CSME 2.01, running on older Windows laptops is hit or miss, it seems. Sorry about that.

It's strange that the Middle East.exe frontend seems to exit normally (see the last entry: "Middle East.exe exit"), but you say that very same frontend launcher hangs (see your "not responding" screenshot above).

In the Logs folder, there is only frontend.log, no engine.log at all?

This is looking more and more like an AV thing. If there is no engine.log at all, the OS appears to be blocking the game engine EXE from running right from the get-go. Nothing we can do about that on our end here.

I think you will need to file a ticket with Matrix/Slitherine Tech Support.

Checking again, but it goes from "Not Responding" to opening after a few minutes BUT when you try to open an actual scenario it crashes...
