An amazing achievement. Out of a salvo of six fish fired, five hit the target - one fleet carrier lost, one fleet destroyer eventually lost (foundered whilst under tow) and the North Carolina badly damaged and both its forward turrets knocked out.
With one shot the IJN almost regained the advantage it had lost at Midway...

Proves that, had the IJN subs been used properly, they could have done a n awful lot more damage to the Allies.

That window of opportunity was quite narrow though. With the development of USN ASW capabilities in 43, IJN subs slid into fodder status.

As the war went on, far longer than the IJN had hoped for, their subs were increasingly used for transportation duties to their far-flung remaining isolated island garrisons.
One regularly made trips to Rabaul, the place never seemed to run out of AA ammo no matter how many other victuals and supplies were extremely limited.

Sheer luck. All shots were intended for the CV, the two subsequent hits were in fact misses of the CV.

Yes, but who know the difference between 'ordinance' and 'ordnance'.

Well, keeping ordnance in your abode is against many ordinances ...
