So reviewing the game, I am looking over the mouse over-information for the 32nd US ENG Base Force located at Efate in the Guadalcanal scenario.

I am assuming the mouse over info is provided to make it easier on the gamer during game play? But unfortunately, I have found the info cryptic. What is displayed in the mouse over is this:

[5462] 32nd Base Force - ENG A4 G2 F12 E28 V30 S75

1st search, both thru the game manual (and using forum searches) I found no explanation of the tag. I attempted to deduce the information in game. Bringing up the 32nd USN Base Force Information panel I was able to find:

A4 = Assault Strength
V30 = Aviation Support
S75 = Support (Located in the unit TOE section)

But G2, F12, E28 - might as well be a code from Pluto. I could not match these numbers anywhere.

Hi GP, thx for your quick reply.

So, that's just it. I thought G2 would be number of guns as well. But if you go to the unit panel, right under the
32nd USN Base Force unit icon you have the following:

Infantry: 48
Vehicles: 4
Guns: 14
Other Troops: 2188

So here you have Guns = 14. Which if you look at the TOE below, is correct. The unit actually has 14 guns not 2.

Next the "Engineers" number as 28. I'm not sure where that is extracted from on the unit panel. Again the panel lists
Infantry as "48" and Other Troops: 2188. Are these Engineers? In the Toe, Engineers is listed as "x8", not 28.

F12 also remains quite the mystery. Maybe it's a multiple of Squads in the TOE?

Ah, thank you Alfred. So 14 guns total.

G2 = 2 normal Guns
F12 = 12 Flak Guns

Code solved. :)

What about the 28 Engineers?? Where does that figure come from?

Engineer points = one per squad and 5 per engineer vehicle.

Be warned that you get different values for the "Gun" figure from mouse rollover, unit screen, and combat report. For example, if your bombers sank a ship and 24 guns were lost, you have know idea if they are AA or artillery guns. Even mortars get counted as guns in some screens but not for the purposes of bombardments (must have a range over 2). So treat the "G" figure as very fuzzy.

PS. And then there is the issue of gun size and range. The enemy may have 36 X 75mm guns, but if you have 12 X 155mm guns you will win an artillery duel.

Thx BB Fanboy.

It's interesting that all that info is in the rollover. I guess knowing Flak levels would help.
But Support and Aviation, hmmm. Maybe I just don't have enough experience with the game yet to know how useful it can be.

Appreciate the info posted by folks here. Thx.

IIRC Flak count is number of barrels/4, so F2 would mean 8 barrels

For the Guns be warned, these can be mortars, infantry guns, howitzers, anti-tank guns, dual purpose guns, coastal defense guns, etc. It is best to compare the actual TOE.

For the Infantry: 48 - I presume thats 4 squads (indicated by AV4) of 12 men each (I think squad sized Machine Guns could be counted here too like .50 cal M2HB squad, or .30 M1917 Browning MG)
Other troops: 2188 - should be Support squads, engineer squads, Naval Support squads, etc

The Mouse Over is really just for the rough information, and do not tell about particular effectiveness of the unit (8x80mm Mortars counts the same as 8x57mm ATG and 8x155 Howitzers)

Bear in mind the the field guns (army guns devices) with cailbre less then 70mm do not show up in the rollover in the G category. Go to the French unit in Noumea and see if their 60mm field guns show up.

I looked at the Noumea Detachment and it has 4X65 mm guns, 2 X 37 mm AA guns, 2 X 6" coastal defence guns, and 4 X 3" mortars. It also has some 12.7 mm AAMGs but I don't think they can count as guns. So my question is: how can you tell if the count of 6 guns is the (mortars + coastal guns) or the (AA + coastal guns) or the (artillery + coastal guns)? My guess is the latter, since all those guns most certainly have a range over 2000 yards (horizontal).

Fascinating insight on the Guns info. I will take a closer look myself. I guess one uses the rollover info just as a rough idea of "bigger" gun power including Flak.

Now I am curious how much the different devices play out in Ground combat. Interesting that larger mm guns can make a difference (apparently) according to BBFan

I thought it was barrels/6 to represent all hexsides? Not 100%. Anyone know for sure?
