OK guys

Next in the series is:

Mediterranean Fury 2 – Syrian Surprise.

You are commanding an ESG (Expeditionary Strike Group) centered on the USS Kearsarge and the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). In your 4th month of patrolling the Mediterranean you were about to commence an amphibious exercise with the USS Iowa using primarily British forces as the opposition. That all changed about an hour ago when you received the DEFCON 4 message from Washington, and an accompanying NATO Alert state RED.

This is far more straight forward than the last one - surviving would be a good outcome you are caught somewhat flat footed.

I look forward to your comments and critiques.

Am working on two more! On a Mediterranean roll!

I need to get back to the Tamales though. Caribbean Fury 3 & 4 are both half built. Just need more time....

Loaded up now. A couple of typos in the Side Briefing.

We know that their reediness is high and there are over 3000 Soviet advisors and maintainers deployed throughout Syria.

We have some real quality on our side, the 527th at Incirlik is top notch but we’re quite spread out and not at full reediness posture.

Minor map spelling. Ammon - should be Amman.

I couldn't resist I have started a game of Syrian Surprise, so far so good, haven't found any bug.

A couple of things about Tamales:
The M-113 equipped with TOW at Guantanamo still miss the link to fire them, I have added a couple of TOW mounts to the unit and fired them.
At Tyndall air force there are no an/alq-184(v) and an/asq-213 pods to re-equip the F-16s with the HARM loadouts, have added them in the magazine.

Keep on rolling ahead like this

Some of the Israeli aircraft at Tel Aviv airbase cannot take off, because there isn't a Runway Access Point large enough to accommodate them.
LHD 3 USS Kearsarge contains munitions unusable by any aircraft on board - including AGM-114B, AIM-9L, and all TOW models except BGM-71F TOW 2B.

...that's a lot of aircraft! Help!

EDIT: I think F 83 Numancia and F 35 Cazadora are lost - holidaying E of Socotra, maybe?

Dunno why or how but at some point Israeli F-16s started heading toward the KC-135 I had posted NW of Crete. Maybe the Israeli side needs to be "No refueling"?

Gunner.....
I have just started looking at this scenario Syrian surprise last night.....

However first I want to thank you for organizing all your scenarios the folders.... it really makes things more orderly it helps me getting to where I want to go in a timely manner… I wish some of the other guys doing campaigns would follow your process here..... I really wished the scenarios had atribute at the title to the designer… I believe it would make a difference... to help sort out the hundreds of scenarios that the community currently offers....

Back to the subject of Syrian surprised… I have noticed a few things here… Firstly the scenario was not upgraded to CoW... Which I have done at the start here…
In your briefing it is suggested that the FA 18s be move to Akrotiri.... however there are currently no loadouts there for them.....
The Jordan CAP EAST has no aircraft assigned to it.... I’m suspecting you desired the 9 Sqn f-5’s to go there... currently they are going to CAP WEST... which is already well populated by aircraft at S Mwaffaq AB....
As commented on..... I put the Israelis and the Jordanians( in case they go friendly)… on refueling… Not allowed.....
I will probably put some munitions at Akrotiri... and keep playing here.... As I have just started I will probably be posting more comments…

I also wish you well on your current endeavors… And may you have a fine and rewarding year....

Oh... I would really like a couple more tankers..... please.....

Thank you for your points. I agree on the scenario organization in the Community Pack. I was loosing some of my own scenarios but Miguel was very amenable to the solution of using folders. It has to be a bit of a pain for him though just for updating.

Good points all and I'll fix.

The bit about Akrotiri, I've been pondering. Firstly the advice is given in time of peace where ammo shouldn't be an issue. Was toying with putting pre-positioned ammo there but I don't think that is realistic. I suppose I could have the same ammo resupply setup that is in a couple IO Fury scenarios where there are transports on a non player side but was trying to keep this one simpler. Will have a think on it.

About the tankers - they're a very busy bunch of guys right now. If you play Med Fury 1 there is a good chance that all six of the Turkish ones shut down and refuse to fly! The two you have is a compromise. Med Fury #4 will have a bunch but they are coming from the US. I think the distances and the the shortage of tankers, combined with the large number of targets will give you a few headaches

Thank you and hope you have a good year as well. This will be an exiting year, the book is looking good and I'm quite exited about that.

Hope you enjoy the scenario and I look forward to your points.

Well I’m only 20 minutes into this.... being a slow obsessive micromanager
I’ve destroyed 20 aircraft all Syrian.... and there are 100 more in the air currently.... with the loss of 1F104 ... there must be hundreds more on the ground… I didn’t know Syria had such substantial number of air assets…

So far I’ve only lost the Andromeda...... The two auxiliaries in the north are still afloat… But I can’t imagine they’re going to make it…
The soviet ssm strikes on the Iowa have been defeated at this time as red force launch volleys of only 4-8 missiles at a time..... now.. 1-2 at a time.... Which seems unusual..... but good for the blue guys.... maybe they are saving a bunch of them for a strike on Incirlik......

All of the Syrian IADs and radars with the exception of those at Latakia are east of the coastal mountains… so have very little impact on aircraft flying below 4000 feet .....

The Soviet surface action group is very powerful… So I have not a clue what their objective is and why they’re heading north towards Taurus..... if they went South towards Egypt they could destroy everything NATO has on the water in the eastern Mediterranean in control the Suez canal ..... and with their Syrian bases everything in the eastern Mediterranean ....

I haven’t found any red subs yet ..... In the briefing it is proposed everybody rallied between Cypress Egypt.... So that’s where I figured you park them… And I am heading north to the south west of Cypress..... However.. now I am considering making a run east to the coast of Israel and having their air power protect the NATO forces ..... as it appears that Israel and Syria has greater power than NATO in the eastern Mediterranean..... and more bullets.....

Yup.... I am taking everybody to Israel.....

OK after taking everything I can into consideration… I finally have a general plan…

I believe the red surface action group is eventually going to head to the Aegean to try to link up or help out the black sea force heading south… That would explain their northerly heading out of the Latakia..... and their light salvoes on the NATO assets to their south.... they will probably rely on aviation assets in Syria to try to destroy the NATO ships.....

Sooooo...... I am working on gathering my forces at sea and head for the Israeli coast and use them for air cover.... The three auxiliaries will go to Atakia... if they can make it .... and they will have some protection there .......
I am sending the Tourbe Memphis and Superb north at flank speed.... the Tourby and Memphis will round the west point of Cyprus and engage the red group in the straights with the Superb eventually coming up behind from the south and east....

With my surface group off of Israel .... If they are preserved I should have substantial surface combat force... Then if/when I can get some control over the red air assets in Syria..... I will detach the ships that do not have offensive abilities... and then go north and engage the Soviet group at sea....

Well that’s the plan for now anyway.......

these Syrian fighter sweep flights/gaggles of 40 whatever mig23/29s seems a little far fetched......

I’m into the red side… And I’m looking at some of the Syrian missions…
I now suspect the problem is in the mission “central ship strike”.... I believe for some reason twice the number of aircraft allocated were launched ....
And all of the aircraft airborne have AA loadouts.... none of the aircraft with strike loadouts launched… all the aircraft that had AA loadouts we’re not assigned as escorts…

I don’t believe I’ll carry-on with this… I don’t think it is reasonable at this point until some of the missions are more refined..... currently I don’t believe it is playing as you intended.....

Also there are just so many hundreds of red aircraft you should show mercy and destroy blue force expediently… Instead of having the player die by death of a 1000 cuts over hours. Of time......

I will give it a go again in it’s next iteration .......

Bart,

The event/trigger for sinking a SYRIAN SSK appear to be firing okay but NOT the action which assigns points (+20) unless you deliberately removed those.

Aside from a couple of other issues that were already pointed out (e.g. the Israel Boeings being unable to take off) that's the only thing I've seen.

Any chance of adding an Israeli SEAD strike and OECM mission since I believe they have an EC130 in their inventory. Was also hoping for a squadron of f4E 2000 but apparently the load outs I used in Jane's IAF didn't actually exist in real life then again a phantom with 4 python 4, 4 AIM120a, 6 agm65a and cluster bombs might be a tad heavy!

I'm afraid not. As in the Gulf War, US and European diplomatic efforts are - at least initially - working to keep Israel out of the conflict. And Israel is also receiving Soviet assurances to stay out as well. Participation of Arab states is, or is believed to be, contingent on Israel remaining neutral. If you've played the Indian Fury scenarios you will know that the Gulf states join into the fight but Saudi Arabia does not, nor does Egypt. The US has their eye on bringing these two countries into the fight on their side and not having them as enemies or even siding/aiding the Soviets.

We'll see how that works out later in the story.

You will get messages warning you not to try and bring Israel into the fight. Also, reading between the lines you may realize that this scenario is not the last one involving Syria, so you may not be able to do everything you're told to do.

Well things are going ok for me I have a U2 over Israel and I've taken a few SAM sites out and hit a runway with tomahawks. Lots of enemy raids shot down, the problem is I don't have enough aircraft to get them all with the hornets having a long transit it falls too the RAF to intercept the raids. My biggest problem is Leahy and now my type 42 is out of missiles. Andromeda is still in the fight but she's taken light damage and has only 2 exocet and 2 sea wolf left. The prompt arrival of the hornets, phantoms, tornadoes and Leahy's missiles saved her from the ASHMs but the L39s got a piece of her unfortunately for the escorting mig29s they got too close to her and she got them unfortunately this allowed the l39s to damage her while she reloaded. The Turks on the other hand have lost a few F4s 1 f104 and 2 radars in return they have killed a load of l39, mig29 and mig21s so a good trade, but it almost spelt disaster when a lone mig21 flew around the patriots blind spot and got a few missiles off at the sentry who dived for the deck while jinking left and right successfully avoiding the missiles. Israel has fired at last check 43 patriots sometimes at migs trying to get the tomahawks well inside Syria which has helped a few missiles get through to their target!

Thanks for the update. Some of the tweaks that will come with the next version:

-I'm going to put in a special action to send a Hurc to Akrotiri or Incirlik with Hornet A2A ammo. Only one with a high cost if the Hurc gets hit but that might help the basing issue. (The C-130 will be on a non-player side)

-Limit the Israeli WRA for their Patriots a bit

-Thin out a few of the Syrian strikes, spread them out a little as well.

-I'll fix the Israeli fueling issue and a few of the other bits you guys have picked up.

-I may impose a no-nav zone around Israel so the player cannot hid too blatantly behind a trigger happy neutral.

Hope to have something out this weekend.

B

Thinking this through a bit. Saving these ships would be pretty high on Comd 6th Fleets priority list, which is a pretty long list at the moment. So the Hurc will be under player control and there will be a Brit VC-10 at Gib and a C-141 at Rota also under the players control able to deliver ammo.

Losing one of these will be almost = to losing a ship though...

OK here is a new version:

Fixed up a bunch of the errors you guys picked up, thanks,
Added in some transport AC for the USMC, RAF, Greeks and USAF. They are under player control but I am tempted to put them on a non player side. Thoughts?
Tightened up a bunch of the Syrian missions
Added SAR script and a few SAR helos
Turned Chains of War on
Put a NNav zone around Israel/Jordan
Added some Brit tankers, fout a use for those old Victors!
Those Spanish Frigates found thier way into the Med
Adjsuted Israel's WRA so they shouldn't be dumping all the Patriot shots into Syria, fixed their refueling as well
Trying out Whicker's new random unit placement. Not changing it up too much but perhaps just enough that the SSV doesn't nab you from the start.

As always looking forward to your comments.

Great will give it a go tomorrow on the old one its getting rather difficult to stop the raids now one always makes it through now even had the nimrod getting 2 fritters, my main issue though was Andromeda lost her sea wolf so even the l39s had to be intercepted.
hopefully this will not happen when I give this new version a go.
And lastly those poor cadet mig 21s right at the back not expecting anything and a load of Turkish f16s turn up shoot a load down along with a mig25. oh and as a foot note Israeli patriot count at 70 and 6 IHAWK!

Andromeda should have been retired by now and scenarios like this where she is caught flat footed really show why.

I was debating if the Turk F-16s should be Veteran or just Average, but left them as most NATO being Vets because of the advanced training they do.

Will likely bump some of the MiG-29s up to Average from Cadet, and some of the Soviet Mig-23s up to Veteran to give the Ships a bit more protection.

Curious if you've played the early Northern Fury scenarios. Talk about difficult to stop the raids

Glad your enjoying it.
