Looking for a game

Post by ekcut »

Does this game exist?

I'm looking for a game based on air combat.
I would like to have the squad I belong to (or lead) have different pilots in it. They have different skill levels or skill sets (eg some are great tactitions, others great dogfighters, others have great situational awareness and can spott enemies sooner, or great leaders that can impove the entire squadron etc) Also, do these pilots improve with experience and training, or burn out if used too much?
For me what I am looking for most, is a chance to become familiar with the pilots (either real or ficticious) and watch them grow into aces and rack up the kills. Of course with there demise, i will also feel the pain of their lose.
To be honest the personal level of the pilots is more entertaining to me then the tactics of battle.

It could be a flight sim, or a turn based strategy game, it's the squad management that I am interested in

I'm reminded of old Falcon 3.0
Your squadran had pilots with 3 ratings, dogfighting, bombing and basic flying skill. AI squadmates improved over time. If you had 2 good wingmen and managed to keep them alive for several missions you became and powerful fighting
force! Then when one of them made the ultimate sacrifice I remember being so upset I couldn't eat dinner! I love that sort of immersion! I havn't seen it in any game since.

Thanks!

Sounds like a great game. I've never heard of anything like it. Perhaps you could design it?[;)]

Battle of Britain II, might be what your looking for...

You can either act as the "Air Commander" and manage from the map over-head view, or jump into one of the airframes [:)]

Some tweaking is needed for hi-res/W10 ect. More info on that in the specific game Matrix sub-forum.

I actually made an game using macros through excel. Has to be head to head though, zero graphics (of course) and very little strategy. It was basically pilots with 12 different attributes, having their own little battle and I just sat back and watched the results.

Wasn't very fun :)

I'll stick with what I know, and making games isn't it :)

Not exactly what I am looking for (No individual pilots). Plus I have tried on 3 different computers and I have not been able to complete a mission without a crash to desktop. I think it is gorgeous, so smooth and soaring in the air, but I can not play it on my systems. :(
Of course, this is from a CD bought when the game first came out. Maybe I'll re-buy with the digital download and see if I have better luck.

Dude...we could not be more on the same page if we tried.
I have used that EXACT game as my reference for my dream game (Ok...more like OOTP 15, as it's been a few years)

Online Multiplayer. Instead of Leagues, you have counties. Instead of Teams, you have a squad.
Your pilots are rated in as many categories as you can think of. Both current and potential ratings.
Money/renown/swag/points or whatever "currency" we decide that is accumulated each sim, are used to "buy/repair" planes and pilots from the factories and flight school respectivly.

Each sim, you face off against a squad from the other league. Each squad strategizes offensive and defensive flights. You send your best bomber pilots (and select planes, which also age and deteriorate over time) on the offense, against the planes and pilots of your opponents defensive lineup....and vise versa.
You select formations, assign pilots to those formations that are best suited for their individual skill set. (Leaders, wingmen, tail end Charlie)
Success in battle (you attack factories or populations) effect the other teams ability to build quality planes and develop better pilots.

After each sim, you bid amooungst your country for the best plans and pilots to replenish your squad. Individual squad success is important for your survival, but team success will be hugely important too.

If I had any sort of programing skill...this is the game I would make!

You got it, you could have a career mode for Hartmann and Rall. It could be done but I am just a thinker on this. On your Six was lousy

Am doubtful this will fit the OP's needs and it is a bit pricey. But a USAF guy tightened things up, so it can be quite an involving real time sim.

I wish those games went on sale, I think matrix has the older game at 49.99

Sell these old games for 9.99 and they will go, that's why I like Steam, plus a refund policy

it's the squad management that I am interested in

I see no one mentioned this gem: B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th.

Video

One of the most immersive games I have ever played. A bit like the FPS Stalker series (cheeki breeki).

No matter the resources, spectacular CGI, some (or many or most games) lack a soul. A few chosen ones manage to recreate an unique atmosphere. B-17 (made in 2000) is certainly one of these.
