Scen026 BabesLite-A Me against Imperial AI Emperor

Post by Lawless1 »

Greeting all

BBfanboy suggest that I start an AAR after posting in the main page. That thread will be added to this introduction thread.

My attempt at an AAR based on my modification of BabesLite-A scenario 26

BabesLite is a set of two basic scenarios: Scen026 - Dec. 7 start, and Scen 027 - Dec. 8 start. BabesLite Scen026 and Scen027 are completely equivalent to stock scenarios 001 and 006.

The BabesLite-A scenarios are set up for use with the Stock Map, that comes with the game. So all that needs to be done to install these scenarios is to download them and unzip them into the game's SCEN folder. Nothing more needs to be done. Each of the scenarios has a unique name, that describes what it is, that will appear on the Select Scenario screen when the game is launched.

My modification didn't go for the big and powerful warships but more along the line to adding some 16 knots AK, Clemson DD, USCG Patrol Boats, (Erie, Lake and Treasury-class cutters), also added were the additional bases I believe that were added to Scn #100, in Burma, Malay and Oz all had some LI and R. The last thing added was some additional PBY groups, and some engineering vehicle to a few Eng LCU. Probably got a little carried away playing with the editor. Allied PP increased to 100 points, Japan PP were also increased by 100 or 150 (don't remember which I entered) points, not sure how well the AI uses PP, if at all.

Playing against the AI on Very Hard. My goal is not to break the AI and see how close I can get to 1945. I will be taking some actions that others may fine questionable. My thinking and from reading others AAR, is that a good JFB can pretty much take whatever they want, when they want in the first six months of game play. Therefore regardless of political concerns, all Australian forces will be evacuated to the mainland with those at PM and surrounding area going to Horn Island. Yes, Port Moresby and Rabaul will be evacuated. Canton and Baker Island will not be reinforced. Thinking here is to let Japan take them, and then use the bases to train my ships and a/c. This will mean my supply routes may have to go deeper into SoPac.

Sir Robin will not be a completer evacuation of various area. Will attempt to get all forces located north of Singapore to Singapore. Georgetown will not be abandon. Aussie units will attempt to evacuate to Australia as will British Malay BF that can be bought out. British BF on north coast of Borneo will attempt to evacuate. if successful , some will go to Coco Island, the rest to Australia.

I have no idea what Imperial AI Emperor has in store for me. My previous experience is with Gary Grigsby's Pacific War and many starts of AE, stopping each time I found something new that I wasn't doing or doing incorrectly. As Alfred (IIRC) stated once, every time you do a restart you have lost to the AI. So the AI has kicked my butt. My restarts were not because I lost my carries but more related to changing strategies.

What I will probably do is monthly recaps of the actions with the occasional Combat Report thrown in. Will not be using any of the 3rd party aides, as I have had trouble getting Tracker etc, set up.

Many ships can be converted in DaBabe Lite A in Dec 41 to ships with greater AA/ASW assets, the trick is to find an locate them. As was historical the vast Allied fleet is scatter throughout the various areas of operations. Remember that the conversions will increase the VP value for the Japan player.

Each scenario has its own set of ships that can be converted, below are the ship classes that can be converted in December 1941(with locations) in the Scn#26 BabesLite A, stock map, Dec 7th start. Me against AI.

Clemson Class DD to DE, APD, AVD, DM, DMS -- I convert all to APD for the increase, AA/ASW

My bad for not having my Dutch Patrol a/c patrolling, they were transporting additional troops into

forced to abort the landing. DD Reed did suffer damage, mostly system, around 60, flooding is manageable abut 5 and fire was listed as 2.

My Setup

My turns for this game will run from 1-3 days depending on activity.

The following which took place over the first week of combat, is my setup for my current game:

One thing that the Allies suffer from is lack of Political Points, especially in the beginning weeks of the war. Quick way to gain 155 points is to withdraw the following air units.

At Hong Kong
HK Flight/FAA Pat a/c 22 points
HK Flight/FAF TB a/c 18 points
HK Flight/FAA Pat a/c 17 points

At Kuantan
100 Sqn RAF Det Recon 12 points

At SF
19th BG/32nd BS Det B17 a/c 63 points
19th BG/32nd BG B17 a/c 23 points

Engineer units are few and far between so, I will make an attempt to evacuate the following units in addition to the Australian LCU at Singer

102nd RBF @ HK to Darwin
British Malay BF that can be bought out. British BF on north coast of Borneo will attempt to evacuate. if successful , some will go to Coco Island, the rest to Australia
USN-BF and USAAF-BF in the Philippines will be evacuated within the 1st week of the war
All forces at Kuching to Cocos
Recombine North Borneo BF @ Singkawang
xfer by patrol a/c Riouw KNIL INF @ Singkep to Singkawang
xfer by patrol a/c Bintan Det BF @ Tandjcengpinang to Singkawang
Reinforce Koepang with samples of Dutch LCU/Eng from Java
Reinforce Makassar with units from Bandjarmsin and Samannda (good use of Dutch transport a/c)
Reinforce Amban with Dutch BF located @ Ternate and Sarong
Reinforce Kendari with all units assigned to Celebes

All British units on ships docked in India's ports will be unloaded. TF will be sent to Aden after unloading
British 18th Inf Div to Australia

B17 in Philippines will do Nav Srch before being bought out and sent to India and AU

Unlike MacArthur, I will not meet the IJA on the beach, all LCU north and west of Clark will relocate to Clark Field or Manila

Attempt evacuation of Aux ships in Java

Reinforce Sava, Pago Pago, Christmas Island, Midway, Johnson Island Tahiti, and a few other SPac islands

Start pilot training

All bombers to start NavSch especially those on WC, since the game always floods the WC with subs
4E NavSch for US, all others mix Gnd/NavSch
2E ASW for those in DEI, WC, PH
FP NavSch, ASW, Escort, NavAttk
PC NavSch, ASW, NavAttk
Fighter training @10K on escort rang 0

WC float planes and patrol craft will stand down for the first three days than set to a night NAV SCH. Once sub threat lessens the float planes will add training for LNAV and Escort.

AVP will dispatch to the island off of LA and the FP and PC will be station there.

II US Fighter Command and the 206th Coast AA Reg will embark on transports for the long trip to Australia

All industry in area threaten by IJA will be set to no repair

Start building forts or air fields depending on the threat level.

After the recent early WC invasion in someone game, I will make sure all shipyard locations have LCU located in them. I also allocate one of the incoming smaller LCU to prep for Diego Garcia and send them to CT for transport to Diego Garcia

Downgrade one of the 25 a/c P-38 units for deployment forward

Get empty ships moving to CT, WC or Oz. Start moving fuel/supplies forward

EC-CT for LCU,F,S
EC-PC for F,S
PC-Pt Stanley for F,S (I use Port Stanley as a backup in case AI goes for SoPAC) only 4 ships
PC-CT F,S
CT-India F,S,LCU
CT-OZ F,S,LCU
Aden-India S,LCU
WC-SPAC F,S,LCU
WC-PH F,S,LCU
WC-NZ F,S,LCU
WC-OZ F,S,LCU,
PH-PAC F,S,LCU

Will attempt to interdict invasion force to Wake, will also attempt evacuation of Wake with ships added to Johnson Island. Sometimes it has work, other time it has not.
Second CVTF will head south trying to locate any raiders that may be there.

All subs to sea with patrol around hex instead of setting each individual hex, react range 1

Sub mine laying TF to be sent to Midway, the coastal hex going to Saigon

Evacuate ships from Singer, Java, Manila in small 3-4 ship TF, each with different waypoints set.

I also am using Win 7.
To do a screen capture:
- hit the PrtScr (print screen) key that is to the right of the F12 key on your keyboard. This copies the image on the screen to your clipboard.
- do NOT copy any other text or images until you can save this one. The clipboard only holds one copied item at a time
- open a graphics/picture editing program. Windows Paint will do.
- Paste the image into the blank space on the programs drawing space. You can do this with a right mouse button click and choose paste, or keys CTRL V
- Edit your image as you wish, cropping away stuff not needed and annotating with text where you wish
- save the image as a .jpg file. The forum software only allows .jpg or .gif image files. Note which subdirectory on your computer has the image so you can upload it to your draft post later.

In case you don't know you can pause the game with Ctrl-p if you want to do mid turn screenshots.

I usually open two paint programs. I use one to paste the screenshots, then I cut the piece I want and paste it in the second paint. Then I take another screenshot paste it in the first, cut a piece and add it to the second paint and so on.

That way you can compose a picture with lost details from many screenshots.
I do not know what is scarier: that I do understand nothing of this demonic script or that I am starting to see the demons that it evokes.

Best screenshot-making tool for this game was shown to me right here on these forums by Wdolson.

It's a free software program called Greenshot which pauses the current screen and allows you to select the target area and then instantly creates a jpg from it. To activate it, you just need to press a hotkey. Very simple and effective; removes any need to have to go into paint and edit sizes, etc.

Screen shot of all ships under repair at PH on 8Dec41,

All damaged BB place into Pier Side mode to reduce System damage, before returning to WC for repairs and upgrades

In my past games I usually sent any surviving BB to EC for repair and upgrade. Trying something different

Every game I have played against the AI had a dozen subs stalking PH and the WC USA. With early US ASW being so weak, it is advisable to wait until about the end of January before moving the BBs. In the meantime, put plenty of WC and PH aircraft on Nav Search and ASW duties. They will suck at first but gradually become competent and begin outing the subs. I usually put 30% of a green squadron on training, 40 to 50% patrol and 20% rest (to allow repair of airframes and reduce ops losses).

BB are already halfway there, may change home port to EC. Currently one spotted sub IVO SF, four IVO LA and four IVO Tacoma.
All bombers are doing Nav Search. Some 2E doing ASW. Cats and FP are doing day and night search for ASW and Nav Search

Bombers that get reassigned by the end of Jan are 100% search for the first week.

Amusing search arc for most of the WC a/c, range not geater than 6

So what were the results? Did any of the Walrusses (Walrii?) shoot down anything, or even survive the combat? [:D]
Hard to imagine a Walrus armed with a .303 British MG taking on a faster Kate armed with a similar weapon on a swivel mount!
I would also assume the Warhawks ate up the Claudes and had a few Kates for dessert. [:)]

Only lost 1 a/c one Fokker C.XI, main purpose was to add additional a/c for the IJN fighter to shoot at.

In another game, I used the FP on Boise and Huston to break up a similar attack from a single CVL air group. Lost one or two, but they did cause damage to the bombers

The 3 Hawks did damage on of the Claude
