It's early '42 and i think my opponent has a few us carriers in a port waiting for a couple brits and surface cover. All I have nearby is mini KB and a few betty squadron but no zeros can reach.

i'm toying with the idea of stripping a couple of betty squadrons of all the good pilots filling them with recruits and attacking the AF/Port hoping to strip the CAP so i can strike with Mini KB.

Any thoughts. First time PBEM.

Good way to lose a lot of betties. They dont really have decent defense against fighters, even if they have good crews.

In general, it's a reasonable consideration. Depending on your house rules (if any), there may be some alternative considerations:

1. Is the port within range of IJAAF bombers (e.g., Sally, Helen, etc.)? If so, I would preferentially use those for a high-risk mission. Betty pilots take comparatively longer to cross train in NavT *and* NavB *and* Ground *and* (often) NavSearch and as such are more valuable than those LBA bomber pilots that pretty much only bang on the ground / airfields / troops. Betty pilots make great replacements for your KB B5N/B6N airframes.

2. Does the port just so happen to be Colombo on the island of Ceylon? That port comes with some of the best AAA in the game. Low level bombing on the port will likely shred any bomber strike at this stage. This may tilt the calculus against the value.

3. What sort of CAP are we talking about? 6 Allied fighters? 200?

4. Consider using miniKB's fighter pilots to sweep for a day or two ahead of time and then having the main strike being well-trained Betty pilots. Do you think you could attrit the CAP sufficiently in this manner? Then the Betties could carry the main weight and your miniKB bomber pilots can be spared.

Hi Chicken boy. It's a small port probably no AA. I think the carriers are just parked there for a day possibly two while waiting for other carriers and a surface TF. I was going to strip the betties of all their good pilots and send in recruits on a suicide mission knowing i'll lose most bombers. but that way i could fight my way in with my mini kb kates with zeros escorting. maybe. i'm guessing 2 or 3 american cvs. very early 42. i may have only 1 day of opening before he's stronger than me.

If the carriers are actually parked there, and not in a TF, then CAP would be from the airfield alone.

In early 1942 (well, how early exactly?), the Allies have extremely minimal CAP assets and even fewer naval strike assets. If it's just 2 carriers, MKB can handle that with ease if you've put every CVL/CVE you have into it - 2 USN CVs will have no more than 90 fighters in total (if 2 USMC 18-plane squadrons transferred aboard), all of them sub-par compared to the Zero and especially so if there is a pilot quality disparity.

Hi Lokasenna,

That sounds like a better plan. I'll give it a shot.

Thanks

There's no reason not to send everything you've got available, and every reason to send everything you have available.

Losing the initial CVs can set the Allies back months or more, depending on specifics.

An interesting problem.

What would likely happen though is your Betties stationed far away would attack last, while the mini-kb (closer) would attack first.

Unlike Allied bombers, Betties don't really exhaust Allied CAP...rather they alert it.

You can certainly use some of the fighters on the Mini KB to provide LRCAP to help protect the Betties. In fact sweeping and LRCAP from the MiniKB opening the way for a Betty strike might deliver overall better results.

Hard to tell with the info you have provided. Mavis and Emily can bomb too. Jakes are really good at 1000 feet even though the bombs are tiny.

thanks for all the help. I never in a million years would have thought Jakes at 1000 feet.

I didn't mean to be so cryptic but i didnt want my opponent to know about it.

It's actually 12/28/41 and i'm pretty sure he has a couple us carriers at tjilitap on java. my mini kb is at balikpapan to refuel while palembang(mine) has only army a/c to defend it. I think he may have a couple of brit cvs coming down to join them. maybe. i just wasn't confident about my mini kb going against bigger us carriers. But you guys have helped me understand that my small stuff is still probably better than his bigger cvs. I didn't want him to hit palembang too hard. i've got a good 4CA++ tf to protect it.

Yeah, what this man said.

Forget about BETTY unescorted attack. They will be shredded even by Dutch fighters, and CAP will be probably still there (and CV fighters may be unloaded into base). You can try to set your Mini-KB fighters on escort, or try night BETTY port attack. Best results will be probably, if you just bombard this port with some BBs.
