The hotseat is called "Head to Head", but the combat animation playback seems to be from both sides, so you gain some intel on the enemy that you would not have if there were separate playbacks for IJ and Allied player.

Edit - not just the combat, but all the game messages like fort level increases, ships sinking at sea during the turn but after combat, etc.
