STBP 1943-45 devoncop (Axis) vs warspite1 (CW) - no devoncop please

Post by warspite1 »

devoncop and I are going to give this scenario a try. I expect there will be a slow start to this game as on our first turns we will both need to understand what we have and what the rules are.

There are no naval units sadly....

Things to note:

The Allied player has no immediate air transport capability.

The Allies can't invade any beaches north of the Salerno region.

The Allies win by occupying most of Italy, Brenner Pass, and the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica at the end of the game. The Axis win if they stop the Allies from achieving this.

I note there is no documentation for this scenario - just a brief scenario briefing.

As a result I have no idea where reinforcements turn up. The only Allied real estate is the northeastern tip of Tunisia so presumably its there and then I order them to 'board ship' as per CFNA.

I won't worry about that for the moment though and will concentrate on what I have ashore in Sicily.

10th July 1943

The British (In this AAR I'll use British generally, unless I am referring to specific units, as Commonwealth is too much of a mouthful and Allied isn't appropriate because the US are separate) units ashore consisted of:

The game takes some getting used to after the desert movement I've been used to; movement allowance is reduced here. This means less opportunity for sweeping envelopment tactics.

I've no idea what I may run into and so I proceed cautiously with XIII Corps beyond Siracusa. In the southern section of the front, its all about pushing inland with XXX Corps as quickly as possible, and as soon as I start to move, so the presence of more enemy are revealed.

The British 50th Division, as part of XIII Corps, is supposed to join up with 5th Division but their way is barred initially and, this link-up cannot be effected until the path north is cleared of enemy units.

I need to be a little careful with the US forces as they have a wide area to cover and I don't want gaps being created in the line.

* Wiki makes reference to this unit being called the Provisional Corps. I will call it the I Corps for ease of writing/reading

A way north is almost cleared (save a couple of coastal units in retreat barring the way), but then the Allies suffer a proficiency test and that brings day 1 to a close.

Turn 1 - Axis Turn
10th July 1943

There were no attacks showing - but there appeared to be bombardments in the playback. I will check with my opponent in case there is something wrong.

Meanwhile back at the ranch.....

In the west the Italians have put the over-eager 30th Infantry Regiment out of supply by pushing down to the coast with the 3 battalions of the 124th Coastal Regiment.

In the centre, ahead of the US 1st Division, the Germans would appear to have retreated.

In the British sector the Italians are making a stand west of Augusta, with German support just behind....

That was a poor turn. I can't take a picture sadly but the turn was limited to pushing the Italians back where I could - which was not very much..... The Axis air force is very active.
