My '41 campaign game is now in January 1943 . There was a lone panzer division, showing a CV of 23, so I figure it must be fatigued, that I attacked with 1 Tank Corps, 2 Cav Corps and 9 Rifle Divisions. Support units included 2259 Arty (vs 144) plus rocket, mortar and tank regiments. Galitsky is commanding and has good ratings (7 morale, 6 Inf. Except for one unit, Morale and Experience is in the range from 48 to 53. Started with two bombing attacks total of 230 planes (vs 25). And another 250 vs 160 in Ground support

Battle result is a German retreat. Seven tanks damaged and and 9 destroyed (6 and 6 in the ground attack).

So, my question is, what else do I need to kill more German tanks?

To increase looses, you need to make him retreat though ennemy zone of control. If the retreat path is wide open, damage will be low.

To answer your specific question, my opinion is nothing.
I think now that trying to attrit german tank numbers is pointless.
German tank production is very high in 1942/1943 and they are quite hard to kill.
You need to aim to german power (and that's mean striking as primary german infantry divisions). Panzerdivision are too hard to break.

I was attacking from 4 hexes, with German units in the other 2. So a friendly unit negates the ZOC?

No you did extra damage because of your ZOC, but even extra damage seems low.
Of course the more ZOC you have on the retreat path the more damage is done.

Thanks but not sure what you mean and I want to get it right. Is it a longer multi hex retreat through zones of control or more units exerting zoc into a single hex?

Use more Sturmoviks. Use them before the attack, use them during the attack, and use them after the German PZ division retreats. Rinse repeat.

I normally concentrate on German Infantry myself. You can get more casualties that way & the sooner you reduce that number (German Manpower) the better.

High morale/experience reduced retreat losses, high fatigue may cause extra losses.
With air attacks you may damage soem tanks, those are lost during retreats.
Remember that losses from Battle reports are influenced by Fog of War.

Losses in battle reports (and strength) are not affected by FoW.
