Is there any loss of coast-watcher capability if dot bases are captured? I am in first PBEM as Japan. I know how effective Allied coast-watchers are up and down the Slot. Is this lessened if Japan religiously captures all those dot bases?

I don't think so. Coastwatching is a random activity and is only triggered when the island or port is captured by the enemy.

Most coastwatching info is garbage anyway - reporting ships where there are none and not reporting those actually there. Occasionally they will get a port and ship name correct, but this appears to be random too.

Naval search is another issue. Dot bases could have an AVD or AVP with a detachment of patrol planes or float planes searching your route. Recon of the dot hex should tell you if anything is there.

Is this historical? I thought the coastwatchers were important.

It's a shame. In reality coastwatchers did a great job according to countless sources.

Nobody would play the Japanese if "reality" had anything to do with this game.

Some of them did, like for instance the ones involved in JFK's rescue. But a lot of that wouldn't have an impact on the scale of this game.
