Atoll vs jungle - airstrip deterioration

As I understand, both sides had problems with airstrip deterioration due to rainfall and subsequent muddy condtions in jungle "hexes". To counteract this, Allies used Marston matting, while Japs suffered. What about airstrips constructed on atolls? Was their surface stable all year round? Thanks.

I have read that airstrips surfaced with crushed coral had excellent durability, comparable to concrete.
