One of the things I do for a living is to teach the interpretation of social statistics - both at a technical level and also for journalists etc. Here I tend to focus on things like sample size, methodology and whether the claimed interpretation (usually in a govt/corporate press release) passes the common sense test.

Well have the material for my next session. This is from one of Scotland's national dailies - the Herald. Its basically a decent enough paper and since I cycle in Scotland I'd agree with the focus of the article:

http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/15491440.Cyclists_call_for_rethink_on_entire_Scottish_road_system/

But then you find this at the bottom of the page:

I do hope the journalist never attended one of my sessions ... sigh

Dear Lord, there were 45 cyclists in Scotland sober enough to take part in survey? Sounds fishy to me.

Best wishes,
Steve

Well, they would say that wouldn't they?

45 pedestrians and drivers would probably say they are fed up with dodging cyclists at night without lights (used to be an offence didn't it?) and cyclists on the pavement (also used to be an offence, didn't it?)

Try telling that to the kids today. Etc.

I'm pretty sure I am going to hit an unlit cyclist one night soon, particularly if it is raining. Much though I hate those flashing lights some use at least they can be seen.

I am mostly stunned by the fact that they mentioned the sample size.

Well, everyone knows that exactly 85.637% of statistics are made up anyway.. Sample size = 1.

I remember the days when you were suppose to ride your bike on the opposite side of the road toward incoming traffic. You think it's bad today.

There was an article last year saying that it was a shame that 50% of the people made less than the median income.
