Fons Iannelli: War/Post-War, which brings together the images he shot at sea with images he shot of everyday life in post-war America upon his return, is on view at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York through August 11, 2017.

Thanks for the link. Nice to see photos dated 1943 - quite a long way till Aug 1945 and the sailors in the photos were mostly very serious about their work.

I'm confused by this pic...

"Sailors Aboard U.S.S. Yorktown with Naval Artillery Above, c. 1943."

Is that even an Essex class carrier?

Those guns are from a light cruiser, probably the one in the previous photo. The photo following that one is a carrier, probably Yorktown,
I suspect the people posting the pics to the site made a goof in writing in the captions.

I thought for a second the Essex class had gone full circle and went back to the original Lexington configuration

I agree about the CL designation - my guess is Cleveland class.

Me too. The first picture of the CL shows a 5"/38 dual gun mount just above the 6" turret. That confirms it is a Cleveland class rather than a Brooklyn.

What impressed me most was the "Sleeping man" picture - just in skivvies, no blanket and still sweating profusely. Tropical climate is bad enough without air-conditioning, I cannot even imagine fighting a war under these living conditions - must be hell even without enemy action.
