Greetings aaatoysandmore,
I cut my teeth on AH games in the my early teens on D-Day, Stalingrad, Afrika Korps, Battle of the Bulge, Waterloo, PanzerBlitz, Squad Leader, Longest Day, Luftwaffe etc.
For D-Day I would go with GMT games Normandy 44 or AH Festung Europa for easy to medium complexity for operational level games. Boardgamegeek has some good D-Day lists:
http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/132491/top-10-d-day-games
For pc D-Day games I like HPS/JTS Panzer Campaigns Normandy 44 and the new JTS Panzer Battles Normandy

Those old Avalon Hill games all (well almost all) used the same combat resolution table.

+1 Tiller's Panzer Battles Normandy is a good game.

Also on different Level Tiller's Squad Battles Eagles Strike has some good D-day Scenarios.

Greetings Zorch,
Very true about the CRTs for many of the games being the same but still a good intro to the hobby back in the early 1960s.

Greetings Yogi the Great,
For tactical based HPS/JTS Squad Battles Eagle Strike is a great choice.
I would also add Matrixgames John Tiller Campaign Series for platoon level Normandy scenarios.
Matrixgames Close Combat Caen may be a good alternative too.
Perhaps Panzer Corps or Battle Academy have some Normandy scenarios/campaigns. I do not own them so cannot say for sure.
I would love to see VR designs do Decisive Campaigns:Normandy. That would be amazing given the successful innovations that DC:Barbarossa gave us.

Yes, I second Tiller's game. It is also one in the series with the most updated graphics (still not awesome though) and a better UI. There is a monster D-Day scenario with all five beaches and para drops the night before. That alone will probably keep you busy for weeks/months. Seperate ones for each beach with some variants and a lot of other scenarios. The Normandy master map is well over 30000 hexes (!).

BIG YES. Infact anything and everything using that engine and feature set please:)

I know Cameron will not be making any future game however come on Matrix, surely you can't leave it like that. Surely you can see what greatness can be done with the engine, even go down or up in scale and covering other wars?

I just can't understand why it seems like it's going to be left..a terrible waste. Your in house development team need to get hold of it and run...there is the chance of some mighty future classics just waiting to burst out that engine and feature set.

If I had a development team I'd certainly see if there was a chance to take on the engine and crack on with a series of new games (including trying out coy scale)

An older game you might want top check out is SSG's Battles in Normandy from Matrix. I think there may be a demo floating around.

The AH game The Longest Day.

5x5.5 feet of pure engrossment, and a rules design that doesn't require you to spend a month learning it.

Might be the best designed board game war game I have ever played.

The only way to improve it, would be to computerize it and not change a single aspect right up to NOT designing an AI. Because frankly if you need an AI to play it computerized, odds are you are too lacking to play it in the first place. Stop whining about that comment.

Rick's vote of SSG's Battles in Normandy is worth seconding. I have that one and it is a good solid purchase.

I concur. A great traditional Wargame series.
