XNA Framework Reach profile error when starting DW Universe on Win10

"Could not find a graphics device that supports the XNA Framework Reach profile"

I get this error (after the splash screen) when starting DW Universe.
If I ignore the error and start a new game, other XNA errors appear and the game won't start.
What causes this?

DW Universe on Windows 10 Pro.
I tried reinstalling XNA, DirectX and DW without success.
The game used to work on this system!

with a uninstall and reinstall of the game fixing it for them

but if you wish to post a report to double check the system you can, it may help

How to get a DirectX Diagnostic file:

1. click on "START" 2. click "run" 3. type in "dxdiag" and click "OK" 4. check through the tabs and perform all tests 5. click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments rather than pasted into the body of the post.

Thanks. And solved.

What finally worked was:
a. completely uninstalling XNA and completely uninstalling DW Universe at the same time,
b. rebooting, and then
c. reinstalling DW Universe with XNA (using the standard game installer) from zero.

Due to the spam filter for new users, posting something about an error with text with numbers (almost unavoidable) or links to helpful posts (even within the same forum) is incredibly difficult for a new user...

Therefore I have separately attached a text file with a summary of everything that DID NOT work and what DID work for me in case this is helpful for other people.
