Confession Of An AFB
I have 2 games going on and have finished others, all playing as the Allies. I now find myself getting the itch to play the Japanese. I feel that I now have an insight into what I could turn into a successful Japanese campaign. My weakness will be managing the Japanese economy, but I'm sure that I can glean some hints from many of you.
Forgive me as I'll turn to the dark side after I finish a game.

RE: Confession Of An AFB
Here are a few helpful House Rules that you'll need if you're going to get Japan into 1942:
1. Allied 4EB can only be used against enemy troops in base hexes or non base hexes and at any altitude.
2. Japanese player must pay PP to move a ground unit from one hex to another (this will limit movement, reducing fatigue and conserving supply).
3. Allied player cannot develop or use nuclear weapons before 1945.
4. Allied player must upgrade devices of American, British and Commonwealth ground units before entering Mongolia.
5. During winter months (December through February), Allied player cannot engage in strategic bombing missions from Nome or Anadyr airfields without giving Japanese player 9 month's notice.

You might consider soliciting a JFB to run your economy. It would not necessitate your opponent having a partner. He could tell you what he's doing and why so you could learn it that way.

Also I highly reccommend this production primer by Numdydar. We have a disagreement about something discussed on page one, otherwise I think you should download this and consult it.

That was page one of the primer. The term "repair" and the algorithm to achieve it are applied to a wide range of things that are not actually repairs. R&D factories are built for production via the "repair" function. Extant factories are expanded through the repair function. Factories are converted to produce a different aircraft through the repair function. Just stay the heck out of the editor if you're just a player. If you're a modder fine, but make sure everyone knows what you did and why you did it.

I just started a game as the Japanese for the first time. I have to say, so far it's fun. I opened with the Mersing gambit and a heavy pasting of Manila....GP

That is a little TOO generous for Allies Dan. You might want to dial it back a bit...

TOP SECRET
EYES ONLY: POTUS, Southern Bulwark, Bulldog and Ivan.
Stone the crows. A spy has infiltrated all levels of strategic planning in the war against Japan. A subversive operative has been identified. Goes by the designation tocaff. Recent communications located implicating tocaff as having strong leanings towards, in fact a down right desire to fraternize with the enemy. Strewth! No wonder the Pacific War has been on a down ward spiral for so long.
A concerted effort is required, immediately, to locate and weed out this subversive element. Before all is lost.

Kido Butai, although powerful, was a raiding force, and this is exactly how the Japanese understood its usage. 'Shattered Sword'

I will second and third this comment! [:D] It's taken me years to get John to NOT crash his economy. He still insist on running it without Tracker. [:-]

Meh. It's quite manageable without Tracker. Maybe a few more buttons to push and a few different screens to reference (including hand-written notes), but it's manageable.
RE: Confession Of An AFB
My weakness will be managing the Japanese economy, but I'm sure that I can glean some hints from many of you.
That's everyone's weakness when they start.[:D] Yes, Numdydar's primer is a great place to start, but its only a start. There're so many things to read and consider I can't even remember them all. Then there're personal preferences and style of play.
My game style doesn't match well to the community. For instance I don't stop the production of my merchies as a lot of players do. One reason is I feel this is something Japan wouldn't do. Second, and a bit more important, to me at least, is I can find a use for every vessel I get. I also don't try to get the 'land bridge' going for resources/oil/fuel. Not because I don't believe it couldn't be done, although I have my doubts it could be done on the scale needed. The reason I don't do it is there's no game mechanic to interdict such route, as can be done with sea movement. To me at least I think that's removing an inherent and fun part of playing the game. AFB's try to stop it. I try to keep it going.
That said the economy is all about the numbers. What can I afford to do here and there. Many say not to increase industry as the return on investment takes too long. I say hogwash, as long as its done in a certain way. To me that means expanding where the 'numbers' make sense, Sakhalin, Hokkaido, Formosa, Korea, Manchukuo. These areas all have excess resources and poor industry output. Now does that mean you just go nuts, no, but do match the numbers. To me the payback is faster in these areas as the need to ship is reduced, thus saving fuel which can then be fed to your HI to produce both supply and HI points. Remember its more economical to ship supply than resources. OTOH you do need to leave some excess resources in these areas as the HI have a dearth of available inputs. Again balance.
BTW it goes on and on and on... You get the picture. The economy is all intertwined and everything is affected by what you do in each area. There's no set answer in MHO, and you're going to have to play and adjust to suit your own playing style. Also to find out what will and will not work when its all put together.
Hope some of this helps, and remember the above is JMHO, and YMMV.

+1 to rustysi, it's all about the balance. And by balance, I mean the supply cost of expanding production vs the benefits of increased availability AC, devices, etc. To get a feel for the balance, just try starting a game against the AI. Begin by setting everything in the Home Islands to expand (all the aircraft factories, R&D factories, ship yards, etc) and watch your supplies dwindle down to nothing (Tracker helps in this regard). Then dial things back by about half way and watch how that changes supply consumption. Just keep fiddling with it and pretty soon you will get the feel of it. It isn't hard. Even I can do it! [:D]
And FWIW, it's fun!

6. On any given turn where the Allies sink three or more Japanese carriers, the Japanese player may opt to take a do-over. (I have used this HR in all my campaigns and never had trouble finding a Japanese opponent.)

Dear Admiral Nimitz,
I respectfully request a do-over of last turn, as your flyboys have annihilated KB.
Sincerely yours,
