Strike Tutorials - testing

Post by Gunner98 »

Sunburn asked if we could build a series of tutorials to help new players. tm.asp?m=4299665

So I'll take on the 'Strike Ops' series. He has mapped out 8 Scenarios, not sure how many it will end up being but here is the first:

Bombing Range

Any comments or suggestions welcome.

Hello Gunner,

a quick suggestion on notes : please provide document in PDF format, use simple English and short sentences to help more people abroad figure out what it's all about (I personally enjoy reading what you put in though).

I'll get back to you once I'll have had the opportunity to actually play the scenarios.

Part of the wordiness in the first companion document is my fault. I sent over a couple of technical corrections.

As for the PDF idea, once the document is "final", it would be a good idea to publish it in PDF. The problem is, at least before things are "final", PDF files can't be edited without paid software from Adobe. I don't know about earlier versions of Word, but Word 2016 can save as a PDF.

Here is Tutorial 3 - Complex Strike

I can and will save the final documents as PDF but its just easier for editing to keep them in word until final.

Simplifying the wording will take some time, focusing on pumping them out at the moment and as Churchill once said 'If I Had More Time, I Would Have Written a Shorter Letter' [;)]

Comments and critiques always welcome

I'm trying the frist scenario in the series, and I cannot load it with my 936.15. The error message is

---------------------------
Command
---------------------------
ERROR! The scenario file is probably corrupted, could not determine which database to use!
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

followed by

---------------------------
Command
---------------------------
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Last time I've seen this, it was associated with beta DB used to build a scenario.

Nice looking tutorial with many excellent hints! Thanks Gunner!
I should only have two small notes, both sides Blue and Red are set as playable sides (this is in other tutorial scenarios too).
And "Losses & Expenditures" tab in Scoring window contain previously destroyed units and expended weapons.

Very informatives scenarios Gunner.

The instructions are sometimes a bit confusing, like when one have to select multiple targets at once (have to check if it's not an issue on my end though) and there are a few typos but I assume that you will polish them once you'll have had them all out.

Maybe it would worth to activate the Unlimited magazines at airbases feature so the player isn't intrigued by messages about aircrafts not being readied to Reserve because the required munitions aren't available.

Scen #2 conclusion may happen a bit too soon :

On the opposite, Scen #1 duration may be shortened.

Mission #3, one parking spot isn't grouped :

Hi Gunner 98,

I have a problem with the 3rd tutorial: target distance is larger than strike radius for BlueStrike 1-2, 5-12...so I cant set up any strike missions....do i miss something?

Thanks for your points guys - not able to get the game at the moment, should be able to tomorrow.

alpenmonster - when you set up the mission did you allow the AI to select a route, there is a check box near the bottom of the center column. If yes it may have selected a route that put the target out of range. All should be in range but some of them only by about 10 miles, its close.

Off-axis attack not allowed.

You mention 0801 in the briefing but the scenario starts around 2000 (as a side note, some loadouts are Day only however it seems they are put in use anyway, may be related to the Night & Weather adverse effect feature.)

Nice choice of platforms btw.

OK both of those problems were cleaned up in an earlier test - I have a sneaking suspicion that I uploaded the wrong file. Grr will fix when I get home tonight.

Trying to show some common platforms the player may encounter and the MiG-23 should be one of them, warts included. The next one will have Brit Harriers, and I'm trying to work in the Mirage but unfortunately the French 'Miracle' plane is not very versatile

Thanks

Looking for a mix - the next one is all about terrain masking and buddy illumination, Harrier will work well for that I think.

Scenario 5 will likely be a USN strike
Scenario 6 some modern Chinese stuff
Scenario 7 Italian mix of Eurofighters, Tornado ECRs/IDRs, and maybe some AMX
Scenario 8 will be back to a USAF using F-35's, F-22s with a follow on from F-15Es

These are awesome so far!

I echo the suggestion of stringing them together as a campaign, I think that's a great idea and will give new players a bit of a confidence boost too (finishing a campaign, even a tutorial one, always feels nice!) [:)]

Guys

Here is an updated Tutorial 3 file. I had messed up the file in the previous upload and sent out an old version.

Campaign sounds like a good idea.

As for the delta Mirage, the French versions are quite specialized, mostly due to budget constraints afaik.
The 2000C (and 2000-5) are primarily "blue" fighters, CAP, Interceptions. They do retain a basic A2G capability.
The 2000D and N are specialized strike "green" versions, both are low level and high speed penetration (NOE @600 Kts) strike aircrafts, the D carrying conventional weapons, while the N carries primarily nuclear devices (ASMP missiles) with a basic A2G capability. They don't have a gun though.
Then you had the Mirage IV which was an "high-high-high" nuclear strike aircraft from 1964 to 1996, then used a strategic photo recon until 2005.

Now if you take the non-delta Mirage into consideration, namely the Mirage F1, you've got more flexibility with strike (CT) and recce (CR) capabilities.

What the modern (French) Mirage family lacks is a true SEAD capability, as the Martel missile was carried by the Mirage IIIE, then by the Jaguar (and by the Atlantic).

Speaking of which, a typical combo the French deployed in the area you choose for the first three scenarios would be made of Jaguar, Mirage F1 and Atlantic (ACCP, Elint) aicrafts.
