I was reading an account of the sinking of the Bismark and it was mentioned that the British cruisers Norfolk and Suffolk detected the approach of the Bismark and Prinz Eugen with hydrophones. It seems that a valuable passive detection system is lacking in Commands' surface vessels. Surely their sophisticated bow and towed sonars can and do detect & track surface units as well as subsurface ones.

Did the account suggest they might have detected it prior to dawn, where the MkI eyeball would have significantly less range than sonar?

Didn't we discuss this at some point before?

Yep, a couple years back. Reading that account brought it back to mind. Wanted to see if anyone on the board has any insight on the use of ship-based sonar for acquiring, identifying & tracking other surface vessels.

Scope Jockeys are always looking for something to "Track". On a given day one may pit the sonar against the lookout against the radar to see who/what is more accurate.

I cant see a need for "tracking" a surface unit with sonar, unless your Radar is offline.

practice of any kind is good.

I think the main issue are the limitations of sonar in relation to speed and proximity of the surface, which aren't very compatible with the kind of maneuvering required for ASuW. I don't doubt the scope jockeys are watching and listening all the time, but I'd be really surprised if actually searching for targets this way is standard procedure - there's just too many other sensors that are better at the job, without imposing the same limitations.

What I'm curious about though is how UUVs deployed from surface ships might change that picture.

I was going to ask how radar can find surface targets above the horizon, and OTH radar was the answer. But OTH cannot find closer target and typical radar wavelength cannot penetrate sea water. Is it possible to develop a very powerful sonar to detect surface ships across the horizon?
