Hoping someone can give me some help understanding the numbers a bit. Realize there is variance in the D10 and so on. A T26 took out a Pz IIIH at around 500m.

It was a turret hit, around 500m IIRC. T-26 then has a base penetration value of 4. The turret armor for the Pz IIIH is 4, 3/4, and 4r for the three turret locations. Can someone explain how it works. Is there just one D10 thrown for the effect of the shot. If I missed a calculation example somewhere please let me know.

My Pz IIIH was caught a little on its own - couldn't see for sure but there were maybe 4 x T-26 that saw it.

I realize one can play a game w/o getting into the numbers but I like the numbers. I am not an expert/experience wargamer but I do like the detail.

Right the 45mm will penetrate 4cm at 500m doesn't matter if it is AP or APHE.
The to-hit is determined by a D10 like chance and the tank location is as well.
"10" location="Turret" front="4r"
"9" location="Turret" front="3/4"
"8" location="Turret" front="4"
The '/' indicates there is a 50% chance the turret location armor is 3 and 50% chance it is 4. This means the turret location armor encompasses two armor values.

But the actual shell penetration will vary like a D6 roll chance.
<variablepenetration roll="9" ap="*2.0" aphe="*2.0"
<variablepenetration roll="8" ap="*1.5" aphe="*1.5"
<variablepenetration roll="7" ap="*1.2" aphe="*1.2"

<variablepenetration roll="6" ap="*1.0" aphe="*1.0"
<variablepenetration roll="5" ap="*1.0" aphe="*1.0"
<variablepenetration roll="4" ap="*0.9" aphe="*0.9"
<variablepenetration roll="3" ap="*0.8" aphe="*0.8"
<variablepenetration roll="2" ap="*0.67" aphe="*0.67"
<variablepenetration roll="1" ap="*0.5" aphe="*0.5"

<variablepenetration roll="0" ap="*0.34" aphe="*0.34"

The variable penetration is a multiple of the "4" penetration.
You see if the roll is a 5 or 6 or more then 1.0 x 4cm is the penetration and the shell penetrates 4 so penetrates the turret where it is 3 or 4. i.e. 33% chance
Where the armor is 4r means the armor is rounded. This results in one being subtracted from the "roll" and only a 6 will result in penetration. A 5 will not as 5 becomes a 4. So at this location there is a 16.7% chance.
Where the armor is a "3" as in "3/4" the armor will be penetrated if a 3,4,5 or 6 is rolled. 3 is a 0.8 x 4 and a 4 is a 0.9 x 4. So this is a 66% chance to penetrate.

Now numbers greater than 6 can be rolled as well as less than 1 but they don't change anything in this particular case. They are there mostly for a chance for a rare critical penetration of much better armor or failure against an almost sure thing.

Don't forget once penetration occurs there is also damage. This is a D10 chance based on the destruction number of the shell. Often for small shells this is no damage.

Thanks for the informative response.

So the T26 had a reasonably small chance to penetrate except in the case of location 9. And there was only a 1 in 3 chance that this location would be hit of the turret locations.

I think there were a few T26s firing so obviously then that increases the chances of success. The AI advanced four of them in a line but I cannot remember how many had LOS.

The D value of the tank's gun is 7. So that was less than a 50% chance of causing damage after the penetration?

Yes, 7 or better will result in damage, i.e. 40% chance.
