Having tried a bunch of the single scenarios, I'm going to try and tackle the US Campaign. I'm going on holidays in a week, so there will be a pause for a couple of weeks while I chase the shade in St. Maarten. Hopefully, I will have my forces deployed and the battle started before I head South.

The first scenario has me in charge of 3rd Brigade of the 2nd Armd Division (Hell on Wheels).

Here is a look at the battlefield

So, after thinking about this overnight, I have done a little research. In the last game I played, the Soviets had about 15,500 worth of VPs. I had a saved game from near the end and played it out so that I could check the number of TBs I was facing. By checking the Soviet record at the end, I was up against 5 TB - I thought I was going to be facing a TR - so this was a little bigger.

It also means that each TB is worth about 3,000 points. I could try to get more exact, but I'm too lazy and only really need this kind of comparison.

In this scenario, the Soviets have over 28,000 points. Using the logic from above, that means that I'm likely facing roughly 9 TBs along with their arty, AD, Helos and HQs. This might actually be 7 TB and a couple of MRB (Motor Rifle Bn) or something similar.

I had started my look at the Soviets and guessed that I would be facing two TR (6 TB and 2 MRB) so that is fairly close. I'm going to leave my first two options like that and add a third that includes an independent TB as an additional force.

Capn Darwin,

It is going to be an interesting one - lots of forces and options.

Have a good day,

Mike

Here is the 3rd Soviet option. I've added an Independent TB to the Soviet forces - to give them 9 Bns.

Soviet – Thoughts/Deductions

The Soviets do not like getting into the woods, which is going to be difficult in this scenario.

Most likely – Option 1
Most dangerous – Option 3

Options 1 and 3 are almost the same.

It would be nice if my recce/forward elements can observe enough Soviet movement early on to help me decide which one the Soviets are doing – or whatever they are doing.

Thoughts

As stated earlier, the area along the B3 is important, controlling it or having direct fire on it will help slow down Soviet movement.

I like the first option – defending forward gives me more ground to trade off as the Soviets advance. Also, using the river as an obstacle seems to make lots of sense in slowing the Soviets down.

The problem with Option 2 is that I give up too much ground and the use of the river as an obstacle. So, I’m not going with it.

I like the idea of shaping the battle though. I think that the Soviets are likely to advance with 2 TR forward. This means that the risk of too many Soviet forces getting into EA 1 too quickly is not that high.

I’m going to go with Option 3.

I want to save my FASCAM to use it to slow down or contain the Soviets as they try and push out from EA 1. I can also use my ICM when the Soviets are in EA 1.

2nd Armd Bn has a very important role – back stop EA 1 and being ready to attack the flank of a Soviet push in the 3rd Inf area.

Who would have thought that a scenario could start with an engagement??!!??

You never know what to expect in the scenarios/campaigns in this game.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian,

True enough. For some reason, I keep thinking that I'm going to have some time to get forces forward... Oh well, the enemy always has a say on the battlefield.

This is going to be fun. It should be an interesting ride.

All the best,

Mike

In the campaign game, units and losses carry over into the following scenarios. Between scenarios, you can trade time and/or victory points for replacements. So suicide defenses or offenses can have a long term impact.

Thanks for the very useful information. I thought that they might...

I'm really enjoying this scenario - it starts with a bang and makes me think.

Decision time for A Company 3rd Inf Bn

During my planning, I expected one or maybe two Bns would be going through Buchholz. Right now, I think that the Soviets are going to have at least 3 Bns in Buchholz. The river is a great obstacle, especially with all the bridges blown, but I have found in past scenarios that the Soviets can cross rivers very quickly.

Here are my options.

1. Let A Company stay in place, use the obstacle and fight. They may get mauled, but they will do lots of damage to the Soviets and slow them down. My reinforcements are trickling in, so buying more time would be good.

2. I can leave A Company in place for 30-45 minutes. Enough time to inflict some damage and to slow the Soviets down - buying me more time. Hopefully, they would get away with little casualties.

3. Move A Company soon. Either right away or once the Soviets hit the river. This would mean that they should not take many casualties and have a bit more time to get into their next location.

I'm going to think about this overnight

Blowing the bridges isn't a move you make to deny the Soviets, it's to buy yourself time. You've blown the bridges and infantry is most effective when enemy tanks are right on top of them rather than 500 meters or 1km away, so it's probably better to move A Company. There's some good opportunities for reverse slope positions near the 800 VP markers to the west, so that's a good place to hold.

As for timing, I think it's better to move right away. When enemy tanks have good cover, you'll bleed light armor like APCS/IFVs really fast. Better that A company gets there with their Bradleys (And thus their precious TOWs) than trying to hump it there on foot.

Stimpak,

Thanks for the input and suggestion.

I was thinking along the same lines, so switched the two Southern platoons to Screen tasks and was going to do the same for the third platoon after the next cycle. As you can see below, they two platoons with Screen tasks did not move back as the Soviets got to the river - and have taken some casualties from both direct and indirect fire. I'm actually trying to move them to the woods to the Northwest of Buchholz in the hope that they can help push the Soviets to the South and get some good flank shots in.

I have now given them move orders, so hopefully they will start withdrawing soon!

As I say on the slide, I'm going to use my Arty against troop concentrations. This is one of the first times in playing this game where I have such a good view of the Soviet forces moving forward. So, one M109 Platoon is going to hit targets in depth and the other is going to go after the Soviets pushing against the 3rd Inf. As usual, I wish I had more guns - like a regiment worth and maybe some MLRS....

Have a good evening,

Mike

That was very frustrating and disappointing - my losses that turn are very significant - I loss 6 of my M109s along with some AD and HQ units. This is a big loss and will affect the rest of the game.

I was unable to get A company out of Buchholz, so they are going to die a hard death once the Soviet tanks get across the River.

Oh well, we shall see if things get better this turn...

I've rechecked the time for D Company to start moving and it is closer to 30 minutes. I'm going to plot their moves South and we will see if I actually send them South.

Almost as bad as having a Tiger by the tail, you have a Bear by the tail. Better hang on, you have got a tough battle on your hands.
