I did a Bataan Death March tour, thankfully mostly in an air-conditioned car, a few years back. One thing I remember is Filipinos pronounce that province as "Bah-tah-AHN."

Another thing is the U.S. military mispronounces almost everything. I imagine that goes back to way before WWII. Hence Kah-day-nah is now Kuh-DEE-nah and Yo-ko-ska is now Yuh-KOO-ska.

I ran into a guy from South Island one time who said he was from Du-NEE-din. Kiwis have an interesting take on vowels.

Cheers,
CC

Iam on it. Have to take a break from staring at those pixels. I look at the map at 800X zoom as I paint.

With many windows open and a documentary playing, as I listen.
If I keep at the rate Ive been at the past few days it may be ready sooner than the end of month

Ive been thinking about that. The off map border will be easy to do. And I may be able to paint the added places to what ive done already, so I dont have to start from the beginning.
Ive not used the extended map, which one are you referring to? I will download it.

Extended map is used for the"DaBabes" mods and spin-offs - see https://sites.google.com/site/dababeswitpae/map-and-art/ab-extended-map

Without question, pronunciations vary. We don't say "ParEE" for Paris, or "Moskva" for Moscow. I'd just settle for pronouncing something the way most English speakers do!

---

But even this changes over time.

When I grew up the Capital of China was "PEE - KING" and now it is "BEY JING"

The Orient Express train stops (or used to stop) in "MI LAN NO" but to everyone it was just "MI - LAN" until global coverage of euro football changed our opinion.

Personal Recommendation:

YOU TUBE.

Especially the uploads of the PBS Television series "Battlefield" 1995 onward.. I am hazarding a guess that the documentary types are concerned enough to get it right.

I hear ya on YouTube, Macclan5. I've been watching a documentary on Milne Bay for the past half hour. I started because I was hoping I'd hear them pronounce Gili Gili and Milne Bay (which, oddly, sounds like "Millun Bay" when they say it). I ended up watching the whole thing just because it was interesting to see footage of that part of Papua New Guinea. There was a little section on Milne Bay's place in WW2 history, too. The first place the Japanese lost a ground battle, it said. Is that true? I thought that would've been Guadalcanal.

I doubt that the Japanese had nothing but a string of unblemished victories in China prior to mid-1942. Guadalcanal really wasn't wrapped up until early 1943, so I'm not sure about their timeline for establishing 'victory' or 'loss' in a protracted battle.

When the Japanese were thwarted from invading Pt. Moresby after the Coral Sea battle, they landed some of the troops at Milne Bay but the stubborn Aussies held them. Not sure if they withdrew by sea or hiked to Buna via the jungle.
