What is the default colonization range? For one start I changed it to 1 but then started a new game where I set it to 2 but I think it is still using 1.

I have 10 potential colonies and this is what it shows (and doesn't make sense).

colony 1 - distance 4558k - too far to colonize
colony 2 - distance 2666k - able to colonize
colony 3 - distance 1627k - able to colonize
colony 4 - distance 708k - too far to colonize
colony 5 - distance 628k - able to colonize
colony 6 - distance 595k - too far to colonize
colony 7 - distance 587k - too far to colonize
colony 8 - distance 411k - able to colonize
colony 9 - distance 301k - too far to colonize
colony 10 - distance 274k - too far to colonize

How can colony 8 be able to be colonized while colonies 9 and 10 are closer? Did I do something when I messed with the default range? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall?

Colonization range is measured from the nearest colony owned by your empire, but if the distance reported in the Expansion Planner is referenced to something else, you can most certainly get "nearby" worlds which cannot be colonized because they're too far away while "distant" worlds can be colonized.

I have not bothered trying to confirm it, but I personally suspect that the distances reported in the Expansion Planner are measured from either the nearest established space port or from the home system, probably the former.

It's probably easiest to visualize the range if your turn on the "colonizable planets" option on the lower - right, and see where they are in comparison with your colonies. Alternatively, you can mouse over the potential colonies while zoomed out all the way, so you can see the blips in relation to your colonies.

Either way, I think Aeson is right that the distant is measured from a single target. I suspect that it is from the selected colony ship (red cross). If you don't have a colony ship selected on the drop down menu, the game probably picks your home world instead.

Well I seriously think something is wrong since I only have ONE colony so the measurements should be measured from one location.

I have never understood what the "from" point is in distance measure of the planner, but...

It could make sense if the distance is given from some other location than your capital. For instance, from a selected object/colonization ship.

The zero point seem to be way closer to colony 10 than colony 2, for instance. While your capital is close to colony 10.

Does that make sense from what you see in the game? 2 and 10 are on opposite sides form the capital, and 10 is further away?

No there was something wrong but I don't know what. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it and then had to go in a delete the settings file but this new game seems to be working as I'd expect. It seems as if after I set the colonization distance to 1 sector and then back to 2 sectors it hosed something.
