A Face Lift

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

The 60 was a good tank, especially the A3. Probably the biggest issue I had with it was the lack of horsepower which made it slow and decent armor.

This 'Below the turret ring' blog post compares Raytheon's new offer against the existing Israeli offerings (Sabra, with a more powerful engine in the Mk3) and the Jordanian/Swiss M60 Phoenix.

"In general however the M60 tank is not well suited for being upgraded to modern standards. It is extremely tall, resulting in a larger frontal profile and a target easier to spot and to hit. Hence in comparison with a smaller tank, more armor is required to reach a required level of protection."

"Lastly, the upgrades are quite lackluster in some aspects: more modern tracks are not included, no upgrade provides the commander with an independent (thermal) optic with FCS integration, and the power-to-weight ratio is poor on all models."

Turret traverse rate is vastly improved. I like electric drives as opposed to hydraulic. More responsive and feels more precise to me when laying the gun. Only so much engine compartment space and more HP means a bigger engine. Better track and an ERA package will drive up the weight and the HP to weight ratio suffers. The overall height is not as big a hindrance. The turret height is about average and the gun has a 10 degree depression. A good crew won't present the hull for you to shoot and that amount of gun depression lets you keep your hull hidden. When you get to 6 or 7 degrees, you have to crest the ridge more often to get a shot.
