Work is still very much underway on the main section of the mod which covers the James Kirk era ....but because it is taking time to get out I decided to make some changes.

There are many events and battles in Star Trek which would make great mods for Distant Worlds and I have decided that it would be great to release much smaller mods telling of the battles going on way back in the Star Trek timeline such as the battle between the Vulcans and Andorians and the Battles between Klingons and the Hur'q to name just a few.

The maps will be smaller and will focus on specific areas of the Quadrants with a smaller number of races you can play or meet.

It is altogether likely that by the time I finish there will be 10 or more mods covering the different eras of Star Trek.

If I can manage to get daily work done on Distant Worlds I am aiming to get the first small mod out in November.

Just a quick announcement re this mod.

Once I have completed alpha 1.0 of the Star Wars mod I intend to continue and complete the Star Trek mod.

No guarantee on the date but I am hoping release date is sometime in September.

I am considering limiting the playable races to a small group of the more well known races such as Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Vulcan, Andorian and Borg.

Each of these would have a research tree unique to the race you are playing because it would not make sense the Federation researching Klingon technology.

Please let me know feedback on this considering there are 117 races you may encounter in this mod during gameplay.

I am so excited for the release of this mod. It sounds like it is a lot of work, but it will be awesome. I think it makes sense to limit the playable races so you can be more specific with their research/technology tree. Personally, i'd be happy with that. But maybe the other races could be playable too with the caveat that they share a generic research tree. Thank you for all the work you are doing for this.

By the way...this is the Gorn Raider that will be in the mod....... we never saw the Raider except for a distant shot of it in the remastered version of The Arena where it was only seen in a distant shot.

The Gorns are full fleshed out in Starfleet Battles, which was licensed from Paramount in the 70's. It was made in to a highly successful computer game series (Starfleet Command). You could probably rip the models from there if you need material.

perhaps you can also find some inspiration for the Gorn models and the general behaviour of that race from the galactic strategy web game VGA Planets at the following link:

This week I am hoping to replace the entire research screen for the Federation and bring in research for phasers, photon torpedoes, transporters etc which are unique to Star Trek.

I feel research needs to be completed before the next step of the mod can be worked on.

Over the next day I am documenting the existing research tree before replacing with Star Trek research.

Before the USS Enterprise can be fitted with phasers, the following technologies need to be researched.
This list is still a work in progress......

- phasing principle of physics

In addition to phasers, before the USS Enterprise can be fitted with photon torpedoes, the following technologies need to be researched.

Testing first changes to the research tree........ as any modders know this is a complex area in the game.

When you start the mod in early technology your ships are not able to travel to Mars for example until you research required technology. At this stage you are orbiting the planet like the Space Shuttle.

Once you do have the ability to travel to planets in the local system you will find that your ship has shields but no weapons. Begin research into weapons before heading to other systems in case you encounter Klingons or Romulans.

Still to be tested...... but before you research impulse drive which will allow you to travel to planets in the system your ships will be travelling at a much slower speed. Still a work in progress with research but the pre-impulse drive will more than likely include rocket and / or ion drives.

Prior to impulse speed you are at more danger of being attacked by the Klingons / Romulans

I have started work on the user manual which will be released with the mod.
The manual will show in detail how you play the mod with automation turned off so you are responsible for all aspects of your ships and their crews.

So for example when playing as the Federation you pause the game after start and go into ship design and add impulse engines to your Constitution Class starship.

Wait.... you have to research impulse drive technology first before you can go anywhere.

So research impulse drives and then go back into ship design and add impulse engines to your ship.

The picture below shows impulse engines and warp drive have been added to the mod.

You can see the mod still has small fuel cells.... this is the next step which is to remove the fuel cells and replace them with Dilithium Crystals.

This I am now very happy with....... the new version of the Romulan Bird of Prey.


With the Federation, Klingon and Romulan ships shown here I still need to work out the size of the ship in the mod..... but this will be determined withing the mod config files themselves.

I was not happy with the way some of the ships were in the mod, the reason the mod had not been released yet.

The picture below shows the original Vulcan cruiser on the left (too dark) replaced by the Vulcan Battle Cruiser on the right which was used in the Vulcan war with the Andorians.
